I built the 1985 Monogram release of this Model around '87, nothing like that Old School Testors Glue in a tube. Loved that smell but hated the little strings of it which went EVERYWHERE!
Great Build and Thanks for the Memories!
I built this kit in Junior High in club. We had to use the non-toxic glue. That's the biggest memory I have of this kit is the smell of that glue.... Love it to this day (hated the glue, loved the smell)
That glue turned parts to goo. Medical quality injection molding got better due to heart devices and replacement knees. We needed 'Zap-a-Gap' glue to be invented. Now we're 'good'!
I got to say,I enjoyed this video very much. I built this Kit twice. I’m going to do another one. I picked up on a few things. The best part you didn’t talk down to viewers if that makes sense. Thank you
Love the Monogram Tom Daniel kits, all of them. Great choice and well built.
I can't count how many times I walked past this model and passed on it back in the '60s or early '70s. Good to see someone other than me building it. Great modeling job....
Those were the days, right?!?!?
now thats beyond word picture perfect brah you should be thrilled man
Thanks for the kind words!
Sweet build, thanks for sharing. Brings memories, as a kid I dreamed of getting this, but never got chance to get it. Now as a adult I gotta get this and try it
You really should.... It's a fun build
Top notch paint and detail work!!! No teenage boy could have pulled this off! I remember doing the Drag U La with tube glue, rattle can black and gold paint some 45 years ago.
What a mess that turned out. Wheels didn't move and glue spots here and there. A very sad static display. Can't wait for part two!😍
Thanks for watching. Part 2 is coming very soon....
Great job I'm going to be 54 this year and remember that kit very well had three of them and don't remember any of them being a success but would like to try it again thanks for doing what you do
Lovely build and great commentary on what you did too. Really enjoyed the video. Dan
Maybe some black mariboo on the phineals, and a 1/24 vulture leaning over the roof. Great job, looking forward to the vignette .
I think you'll enjoy it in its vignette.... Coming soon!
Absolutely well done!!!!!!
Thanks so much...
Outstanding job and video. Those repro kits prevent a great challenge, but also great experience and a real 'patience' builder!
True, but damn.... they sure are fun!
I gotta get one of these... They are getting to be a bit expensive, but worth it! I'm finishing up a Lil Coffin now, and have built a few of the Roth cars, which are somewhat difficult, so I've finally got the confidence to attack this kit after 25 years of building! I hate to see all the chrome stripped, the chrome has always been my favorite part! Beautiful job on the kit, you made it look easy!
I'm 59 and I built that model in the early 70s, it came out fine. I didn't paint it, I just left it in its orange mold. Like most old Monogram kits especially the Tom Daniel models all were easy to build
Excellent work on that one sir. I've been building models since the age of 5 ..... if I pan my camera away from my bench you would see 25th scale cars and even a couple 18th scale diecast. I just love building cars....no matter the size. I've also got 27 years of restorations (mostly muscle cars).
You're eye for detail is spot on, well done ! 🍻
I did many odd hot rods growing up. I have the Red Baron in my stash now. Plastic putty is wonderful & should be in everyone's inventory. The Tijuana Taxi was my favorite as a kid. Then the Paddy Wagon. All really cool models.
I sure do love the TT!!!
Cant wait to see the vinyet you come up with this one! Keep them comming
Outstanding work, Paul. I'm so impressed and can't wait to see the vignette.
It should be a lot of fun....
That thing came out really nice. A lot of detail, but your time paid off. The lighting or whatever you did to showcase it at the end was awesome!
Thanks too much!
Great build. Glad you did it step by step
Stumbled across, watched, liked and subscribed....
Remember building this one and Lil' Coffin....one of these days, I'll manage to get my dirty mittens on them again!
Beautiful work mate!
It is a complicated model. I'm pretty sure that I built this as a youngster. Neat car. Nice build!
A lot of fiddly parts....
Absolutely perfect. I remember building this when I was 12 or 13 and really hating it because it never turned out. You have made a work of art in this one. Well done Sir.
Excellent job Paul, fun video and good tutorial. 👍🙂
wow great job on this crazy car cheers.
Great job Paul, turned out brilliant! Even modern kits aren't perfect out of the box and there's always something you have to tweak especially on larger scale kits. I haven't built any in years, can't sit for longer than an hour without my back injury bothering me now, but I used to really enjoy building them before I got that happened.
Absolutely great video. I love the way you speak clearly and provide great detail. I am a fan and I have subscribed. I am relatively new to this hobby and am within your age group, so I appreciate that you do not complicate things too much. I have lots of questions so I will look thru all of your videos and see if I can get the info on these. If you keep producing videos I’ll keep watching. Thank you so much.
Never worry about asking me question - I love to help....
Wow. Absolutely amazing!
Really great custom details. I still have a few plastic and diecast builds from my preteen years. The good old days of model building. And breathing toxic fumes from the glue (I'm older than you) before they changed the formula. LOL
Ditto!
Excellent build!! Great video!
Boy this inspires me to wanna get and build this kit again. Very Cool!
I'm like you, I built a lot of kits when I was a kid when they first came out and the best thing is you can still buy re-pops of those kits and build them better than when I was a kid building models.
Going to Amazon and will try that plastic putty and the fast drying Tamiya glue. Nice review, you have a new subscriber!
The plastic putty is amazing, you can shape with a wet brush and even use it to clean up extra. Goes on easy... I love it....
Beautifully done.Thank you for sharing.
Great, entertaining video man. lovely build👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful job.
Thanks Bob....
I’m new to your Chanel, so pleased I found you, awesome build very impressive
Beauty build buddy,, awesome
Thanks Don!
Damn Paul done killer job on this as a scale model builder myself like seeing the hotwheel guys getting there hands dirty on bigger scale model and more detail and bigger surface area to work with and Thanks for another Killer upload
My two favorite hobbies!
Fabulous job
Thanks
Great and hard job Pauly, congrats from Brasil.
My best modeling bud told me he was building this kit, found this video, and announced he had found my doppelganger. I stopped the video and handed my phone to my wife. She didn't believe that it wasn't me... And we've been together nearly 40 years. 😮 Hope to see you at the Nats in San Marcos.
Great job, looks fantastic!
This was a wonderful build. This is the first video I've watched of yours. Inspired to try one.
It really was so much fun!!!
This is a subject I haven't seen in a long time and never at any hobby contest. Based on a real custom car, it'd look nice next to the Dragula or the Muster's Speed Koach .
We have a contest in Vegas next month. Maybe I should enter it?!?!
@@pauly7218 Go for it!
Looks great!!! Nice job
Fantastic video you possess in here.
kool , thanx....nice work
Robert
I built this as a kid great memories
Great results... couldn't be improved upon unless there were flickering LED's in the lanterns. Very informative, thank you.
Fantastic 👍
I'm an old school model guy . Thanks for the tips
Right?!?!?!? Old School builders rock!
Beg to differ With You Sir, I Owned a 1st Issue of This Kit at 13 yrs old n Brush Painted Everything They Had Gold Testor's Jade Grn Metal flake With NO BRUSH Strokes, the Roof Was Testor's Gloss Black Spray, The Whole Kit Took a Week to Finish and Came Out Perfect. I Like Your Twist on it, God Bless All.
To be honest, I was a pretty un-coordinated kid, so that's part of it.... But damn, I totally remember the Testers Jade!!!!!
Freakin awesome build !!
Nice build I know the kits hard I have one of the original ones didn't turn out as nice as yours. Another kit that I had that I thought was hard was the Thames panel truck. Again nice build!
For a supposedly simple kit, it sure wasn't simple.
That turned out great! I love it when a model starts coming together. I've never seen that kit before. I was more into ships and aircraft though. I loved building models as a kid. I've only done a couple as an adult, and it's been a fair number of years at that. Model building is probably the only thing I could ever say was a hobby of mine. I'd love to get back into it. Anyway, I remember those crappy blue tubes of Testors non-toxic cement well. I kind of liked the smell, too. lol I only used the blue tube once that I can remember because it was so bad. I much preferred the regular tubes way back when. I kind of liked the smell of that, too. lol
They actually still make that glue!
@@pauly7218 That doesn't really surprise me. lol That stuff will probably be around forever. I only bought the blue tube once because the red tube wasn't available. It was horrible stuff. No matter what color tube it was, it would always seem it would eventually start coming out of the side, the longer I had the tube. Makes me wonder if they're still metal tubes or not. lol There are so many better adhesives nowadays that stuff really seems irrelevant anymore.
Excellent job
that turn out great the kit I always hated the orange crate when I was a kid even now
A true work of beauty.
I bought several of those kits so my favorite 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wow that is really nice i built mine in 2000 in one weekend
Just seeing this video now. I tried to build this kit as a kid, in the 70's. The only glue my dad had was Contact Cement...so, you can all imagine how this turned out!
As kids back in the day, any glue and this kit were gonna be problematic!
@@pauly7218 We must be a resilient lot...here we are decades later..still building.
Paulie it looks great dude! I see those die casts lined up waiting on restoration lol. You do amazing work friend!
Some times picking the next project is my biggest project!
Great Job, also Alclad II's Gold paint really doesn't come out to great on regular styrene models but looks great on lexan body's, so your choice of Mig's paint was spot on, can't wait to see your finished kit display!
Wrapping up the video production even as we message!
Pauly, you did a decent job, only two things bug me are 1. You left the whitewalls out which gives it a more 50's feel then the period correct 60's feel and 2. a little shmootz on the drivers side seat (38:51)and kick panel. Good job overall.
Let me tell you, I was torn over the tire treatment!
@@pauly7218 it just looked odd to me.
Great job!!
Wow that was crazy good
Excelente trabajo!!!!
Very cool.
Awesome!
I'm a new subscriber . Awesome video ,the build looks great!!!
Thanks for subscribing! I hope you enjoy the videos!
When I first stated building models I used Carbon Tetracloride, it did all the things you talked about, the quickness of CA with the slower set of conventional glue. It's to bad you can no longer get it without a special permit.
I built that model a couple times as a kid but it never look like that you were right on the money with that Chrome and the gold hack yeah I was painted mine black
NICE WORK...I BUILT THAT AS A 12 YR OLD ...IT. CAME OUT JUST OK ...WITH A LOT OF SHORT CUTS
You are quite correct in your desire for "scale effect" with the metal parts, the pre-chromed parts look way too toy-like 99% of the time and with older kits prominent mold lines and flash have to be removed, this brings it's own problems.
Right?!?!?! I was never sure if I explained it well enough, but kit Chrome is always just too silver!
@@pauly7218 Indeed it is but I have seen chromed parts in Japanese model car kits and the Pegasus Hobbies aftermarket wheel sets that look spot on.
+Max Brandt interesting.
Very nice work. Thank you for sharing your project. I love those old Monogram show cars too. Not a criticism, just an FYI...not all hemi engines are orange. Most modelers like orange hemi engines (I do too). But if you care at some point in the future, first gen hemis are normally painted silver or gold.
Cool info. Thanks for sharing....
That's how I envisioned this to look when I saw the early 1980's issue of this kit.
Great old kit and like you said I never finished mine as a kid. Just ended up being a mess and just robbed the engine for a better car !
i would throw that kit across the room lol
Despite the molding issues and fiddly parts, it was a fun build and one I'm glad I finally built to a level I'm ok with!
I threw a few. Lol!
I don't know if you know that Johnny Lightning made an approximate 1/64 diecast model of this show/ dragcar and offered it as a model kit as well. The kit is also apparently problematic. I got mine from eBay out of box, in pieces without instructions. The original buyer gave up. I bought this Monogram kit as a reissue, but I vowed not to build it until I watched someone else build it on UA-cam. Glad it was you!!! (And not me!!!!!!) Thanks for saving me from myself! Keep having fun with your toys!!!
BUILD IT! You won't regret it! Don't let the issues run you off, it's a fun kit despite anything I said in the heat of the moment!!!
@@pauly7218 Oh I believe it is a fun kit! I only believe that I can tackle it after someone has gone through the hassles of all it's problems and shown me solutions how to deal with them did I have any hope of building it successfully. If I do anything close to your results, I'll be happy. I can't wait for your vignette video! Keep having fun with your toys and Thank you again for taking us along with you!!
Where's the 4K? The video was uploaded in 1080. Excellent build by the way!! Bravo!! This kit reminds me of L'il Coffin...another impossible kit!
I'm so glad you pointed this out, as I have no idea why they aren't posting right now. I think it must have been a result from my crash. Anyhow, thanks for pointing it out so I can get it fixed!
Oh man.. i built this kit as a kid.. didnt end well :D I think I put a firecracker in it and blew it all to hell after getting frustrated .. maybe I should revisit
Burning model glue was my weapon of choice....
What was the name of the puddy you used to fill the gaps with and where can I get it from
Plastic Putty by Vallejo....
Flush cut side cutters work the best.
These are very much that. Also super sharp and come to a nice point to help you cut in close quarters...
When I did my bio video on Tom Daniels I mistakenly put the BHE in there. TD quickly corrected me so on the second version (Sans background music) I made sure to cover it up.
Hey, everyone attributed the kit to him at one time or another... LOL...
Hi Pauly, found you today and just had to subb.
That you and welcome aboard. Would love to hear what made you sub and what you would like to see here going forward....
@@pauly7218 Hi subbed because the model looked great from the pic on the box and you made us feel welcome and showed us what we could do rather then a look how good i am type video.
When I was a kid I built the Boothill Express and PS I didn't have any problem building it
Keep in mind, I was kind of (was) a spaz.... LOL...
@@pauly7218 that's okay I was kind of a spaz to but I was one of the kids that actually were awarded a certificate of a master modeler from monogram back in the 70 71 I just turned 60 and I'm still a model builder 😎
Pauly, I noticed your shadow box in the background, seen your an USAF SSgt, where you stationed at Nellis AFB? Also when where you stationed there? I was there from 1982 to 1985 in the 474th and we may have crossed paths back then.
I was at Nellis from '86-'87. Just missed!
very nice. as a kid I didn't care for the super fiddly models, but didn't like the super easy ones either. Personally, I would have left the body black, and only did gold on the trim and such. all gold... just doesn't work FOR ME. I think the gold does better if it's against black. so it pops more than just solid gold color. Have you ever tried white as the base coat for the gold and silver metalics? In theory, that would give you a brighter gold or silver.
I’m just now trying a white undercoat for metals. I’m kind of liking it.
@@pauly7218 can't wait to see how it comes out. Lots of guys are doing the candy colors over black as well, but I think white or silver works better for that, at least it does for real cars, though black can be used to give a different effect.
If the plastic is bowed, can't you warm it with a hair dryer and put a heavy weight on top to keep it flat? Have you tried to print a model like this with your resin printer?
I actually do have a model car test print, and a cross platform video 3D printing/model building is in the works!
Always been one of my favorites but never owned it.
My favorite was the Tijuana taxi
Love it! I have one, but am hesitant to build it because it is the only one I have.... I might have to change my mind!
Hey great job, one comment, not criticising, the front wheels were actually offset meaning the gaps actually hasd spokes not spokes lined up, not taking away from the fabulous build . I have one myself ,I think I'll leave it in the box, Ed Roth mysterion kit fiddly too.
Funny - I actually figured that out after it was too late! LOL... That kit sure does like to fight you!
This kit got the M80 treatment quicker than most, when I was a kid.
ROTFLMAO!!!! My favorite destruction method was burning model glue....
pink build being mailed to more ! i'll vid and email it to you
I loved the Monogram WWII planes i built as a kid. I hung them from the ceiling. Hmmm. What happened to those?
Old Monogram kits ruled!
Es verdad que el Boothill express aparece en la pelicula ghostbusters ?
Say, do you like to work on the larger scale diecast models? I have a bunch that really should be fixed up. I just don't have the time or patience right now. they're one of those someday projects that never seems to get done.
I have a 62 Chevy, a 55 chevy Nomad, a couple of Boss mustangs, a "led sled" like a 50's merc or something, and a camaro and a couple of pickup trucks. Anyone that's interested can email me at tootall1121@yahoo.com. All I want for them is the shipping, which I think can be a large flat rate box, maybe... oh I also have one mostly metal vintage Harley model.
I'm actually getting ready to introduce larger stuff.... I have a tonka jeep in the wings....
@@pauly7218 here's the bulk of it. I have like 3 or 4 other cars in this kind of scale as well. Pay no attention to the price, we can work a deal if we don't go through ebay, which there is no need to do. It's just the only way I know to show you what I'm talking about.
www.ebay.com/itm/larger-scale-Diecast-Junkyard-lot-parts-or-repair-only/223832475970
Just found a vintage Hot Wheels Pepsi truck. Needs only a minor repair, the rear axle, it's a 3 axle rig, is loose and not doing what it should. I don't know if someone took it off on purpose or what, I found the wheels and axle in the inside of the box on back, yes the read doors do open.
Sounds like a fun one!
@@pauly7218 easy repair, it's already done. I wasn't going to even try to repaint it. the truck itself doesn't need it, and the logo stickers are still in okay shape.
Would you or any of your viewers happen to know where I can get tracks for a KTM crawler log grabber? They need to be about 1/4 inch wide, 2 inches long doubled to where there's a quarter inch to wrap around the drive wheels. the model is called a Kaidiwei crawler. according to what I see online, when you can find one, they're worth a few bucks. from 25 to 50. this one is in great condition except for missing the tracks. Very few of the parts are plastic, it's mostly some metal alloy. Maybe a fancy term for pot metal, but it's mostly metal. only the "glass" drive wheels and bucket are plastic. even the hydraulic cylinders are metal. very high end model for the scale. It's about 1/50 or 1/55 scale. Found it in a toy bin at the thrift. cost me a quarter.
@@tootall5559 email me some info and pics so I can show it off during the show and tell on my live stream. It could help find tracks....
captainpaul@cox.net
You're right I hate injector marks
think i had one.i had loads of plastic kits but had a loon-out one day and just stamped on the models, then binned the lot! I still have a lot of AMT Models,so perhaps i hated Monogram!
LOL....
