It's a great family activity.
But seriously don't worry about it, public opinion about the U.S. is in this weird place because it used to be hyped up as the best place in the world. Everyone thought going to America to reach some American dream was the greatest thing ever. Now along with some very questionable politics the bubble has been burst so the dissing is like a combination of desillusion and "aha!" Because the U.S. seemed to have that 'I'm better than you' arrogance. Also their previous moral policing and meddling created a bitter feeling towards the country.
On an absolute scale though, I think the hate for the U.S. and their incompetence isn't that big of a deal as it seems these days.
Me personally I think the country isn't great, but isn't bad either. And all the Americans I've met in person seemed like polite cool people.
