This reminds me that I've got a NAD 3020 sitting on the floor in the spare bedroom, has not been turned on in years. i bought it new some time in the 80's when i got my first CD player. it powered a nice pair of B&W speakers.
Now having seen this it looks like I'll have to recap it and connect it back to the B&W speakers and play the sounds of my youth.
Got a Quod 33 and 303 somewhere as well, maybe they could be treated to the same recapping. More to put on the to-do list. 🙂

Yeah, Definitely worth getting that on the to-do list. 😀

Lovely video thanks! In regards with startup noise - it's normal. I have a NAD 3020 (vanilla) that my dad bought new in '82 and I also have another vanilla that my grandparents bought around the 80s too, same noise. Super interesting to see subwoofers move backwards and forwards on startup.
To reduce the hum on startup (especially when using the lab inputs), make sure Audio Muting is enabled before switching the amp on. Seems to help a bit. Cheers

Thank you for the kind message, Its appreciated.
I did read a couple places that it was normal, But wasn't 100% sure. Thanks for confirming that again.
I actually have another NAD 3020 video on a different unit, Which is coming soon.
      👍

You can upgrade the speaker terminals with a 5 way binding post 😊

Interesting stuff thank you. my first amp I could afford was a Sony TA-ax4, I got it from a second hand electronics shop around 1989. I loved it.i paid £20..... now in 2023 I just bought a Sony TA-ax3 similar looking amp, nosteligic reasons but not working. I'm an electrician of 30 years but no knowledge in electronics but a big interest, always dabbled.
this TA-ax3 won't power up. if I get it going I'll let you know, otherwiseyou can have it for spares

@@retfurb thanks, I might be in touch! I think it’s 24 volt as there’s a 24 volt relay in there. The pos speaker on one Chanel was shorted to the chassis, a 75k 5 watt resistor had blown along with a thermal fuse. 2 legs were soldered together on the main amplifier chip. Iv sorted those issues apart from the thermal fuse. I’ll replace that and see if it works, fingers crossed!

How does a NAD 3020A with 20w output sound? What speakers did you use ?

I normally test all the amps with bowers and Wilkins DM601 speakers. I have 2 sets of these and love them.
I really like the NAD amp and excellent value for money.

Insted of electrolytic caps, is there a better option?

    • @retfurb

I have always fitted electrolytic with electrolytic, but I have heard of people using film capacitors in place.
I think it is just a matter of size differences.

      M A D … not “mad”
      N E D ….not “ned”
New Acoustic Dimension should always be spoken.
      Not NAD or N A D, a little anal retentive aren’t we.
