I spent the Day in Barnsley Town Centre at the Barnsley Live 2024 Festival.

I’m a Southener from Sussex but have been living in the Barnsley area and married to a Barnsley lad for 44 years and Barnsley is the best place I know, as James has said many times, the people are brill and so friendly , I think Barnsley deserves cult status 🥰

you're always thinking there's going to be trouble, and they're usually is.
You're really getting comfortable speaking to people and not worrying about anything. A big thumbs up from me 👍

I was brought up in Barnsley, Darton actually. Old No. 7 was one of my regular stops back in the 70s along with the King George, Royal Hotel (now called White Horse?), Corner Pin and the Fitzwilliam (closed for many years now), among others. I can still remember standing outside the Bodega (Chennels) in my school uniform from Holgate after my last A level exam, in 1971, waiting for it to open. Happy days.

being from Rotherham and coming to Barnsley town centre it's evident to see it has a pulse and is thriving with
Barnsley folk, never take that for granted.
Great video mate, I work all over the UK and Barnsley is the best town centre, most towns are run down shit holes. Armed forces day in Barnsley this Saturday. Looking forward to it. Great channel keep on going. ❤
I didn't realise until i watched this that Barry Hines had a memorial in Barnsley. He taught PE for two years at my school, Rutherford school in London, in the 1960's. What a lovely gesture and memorial to a great author.

Barnsley is a superb town. We go for Saturday neeeet aaart. Never any trouble. People always very friendly. Ladies always class. Unlike Huddersfield which has become deserted due to the proliferation of some very dodgy people. Hope Barnsley never allows those sorts of troubles to happen because once it takes hold there’s no going back. Keep up the great work Barnsley….👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I’m sad to admit this but I’m a bit ashamed of myself I’ve always had this bias about Barnsley and thought of it as a bit of a rough down on its luck northern town but you’ve massively opened my eyes with this post
Barnsley’s looks to be an amazing place with a thriving vibrant pub culture and an actually a very lovely town centre
I’ve been a massive fan of your page since right near the beginning but this has massively opened my eyes to the fact I have prejudice
I’m gonna make it my mission to have a weekend in Barnsley by the end of the summer

Most genuine working class people are brilliant wherever they are from. None of them will complain because you've had a drink so ignore those that do. Great video.

Absolutely brilliant video. I went to Huddersfield uni and I love that accent "ooooohhhhh nooooooo" they used to say when they saw me in that yorkshire accent, haha😅
What a great vlog James Helen would of loved it shame she was at work . I never knew that Barnsley was so nice , going to to take a trip there with the hubby, maybe stay the night and visit a few pubs , would love for you to do another vlog there and show us the best places to visit while we are there .
Another great video James Barnsley Market looks amazing I've lived in Rotherham since 1958 and never visited. I'm due to have a hip replacement operation in the next 3 weeks once I'm able to walk again I will definitely be visiting. Thank you mate ❤
Looked like a cracking day out James. One thing that stood out to me, aside the friendliness of the people was the overall cleanliness of the streets compared to where I'm from. I'm from York and the council need to pull their socks up, the streets are very mucky and a bit of an embarrassment.
Many years since I’ve been to Barnsley James…looks great. I’ll pay a visit next time I’m visiting family in Rotherham. Our town got destroyed by Meadowhall and Retail world.

Really enjoyed your vlog I didn’t relies Barnsley was so BIG so many pubs. The homeless guy you gave the pound to seemed a bit ungrateful I thought didn’t even thank you like you said you thanked him. keep up the good work maybe do a vlog around Barnsley places of interest anywhere to park a motorhome we might come visit all the way from south Devon. Shame Helen wasn’t out with you she’d have really enjoyed the day 💙 James there’s now’t wrong in having a few beers on a weekend & them that say there is must be pretty sad people……..

Well what a fantastic day out ! - The lady that said Sheffield needs to take note is right, so does Donny as its gone down the pan since I moved to Donny from Sheffield over 35 years ago. We often come to Barnsley shopping as its brilliant compaired to Doncaster Market which isn't half as big as it used to be. The streets look clean and everyone so friendly and enjoyed a fab day out which must have put so much money in the local businesses - Well Done Barnsley for such a fantastic event. 👍👏👏- Shame Helen couldn't make it

Top tip - if you want to get served in a really busy pub, don't get your elbows up and start waving a twenty at the staff while shouting, all you do is make eye contact with someone behind the bar, smile and say "Hiya". You'll be next. Ex pub manager here.

A bus full of us. Came up from London. In the early 90s. For a football game. Barnsley. Beat us in the game. On a Sunday. When. The pubs shut a. 2pm. We was in this pub I wish I remember the name the nicest people and. Pub starf had a lock in. And the guvenes wife. Made us. All food to go home with. One of my best away games. ⚒⚒⚒

I was searching through all the crowds to see if I recognised my two grandchildren who live there . Have t seen them since they were 1 and 3 and they’re 15 and 17 now! I’ve seen some pics of them so have an idea of what they look like but didn’t spot them. Their Dad, my eldest son, died by suicide after splitting with their Mum in 2010 in Halifax 💔
I’ve been once to Barnsley on my Grandsons 17th birthday to post a note to them both at a nail clinic I found my granddaughter had been to via her Facebook, but it turned out to be no longer a clinic but someone’s home and that someone knew my grandson! 😳 unbelievable 🌈✝️🕊️ but defo God at work x x x she said he was surprised by my letter but I’ve not heard anything since. I endure mental disability via severe hormones and am in a decline currently but it’s all in Gods capable hands for the right time x x x

Only saw a little of the place x x x Drove from Bury area Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Littleborough, Heptonstall,……those ends of the woods x x x

Having autism - I personally can not abide crowds and loud noises (literally crippling). So that’s about as close as I’ll ever get I’m afraid (it didn’t used to be this bad).
(Only just catching up on this after five days touring Scotland's Cairngorms & Trossachs).. As a regular ROCK music 🤘🎶 🎸🥁(& tribute band) 'gig-goer' this vlog was a real treat to watch (date for next year noted 👍✨) - The community social scene of Barnsley and surrounding looks absolutely FAB! ✨😁 Thanks James for another fine vlog. 🎤✨

That place has changed so much I don't think I'd be able to find me way around, there used to be a Fashion Store called Monkey down a Snicket (there's a word for ya) opposite No:7s I think it was and when I was holding some folding I used to travel up from the Midlands to bulk buy some clothes, it was a great shop.
Wow Barnsley has changed... I used to stay there back in 2000/2004 regular in a pub in STAIRFOOT ( the blackbull) been demolished now I heard... Love Barnsley love the friendly people there... I stuck out like sore thumb as f from darrn sarf :) 😅
