How Avril Lavigne DESTROYED The Sophomore Slump

  • Avril Lavigne's iconic second record, Under My Skin, has defined the sound of this era's pop-punk girlies: we hear echoes of this record in a host of artists, from Billie Eilish to Olivia Rodrigo. This album was truly....THE MF BLUEPRINT.
Following up a blockbuster debut like Let Go, with HUGE singles (complicated?? sk8er boi?? I'm with you?? HEARD OF IT?) was never going to be an easy feat. Avril retreated into herself and returned with a darker, moodier, but still marketable sound: cementing her legacy with follow up hits like My Happy Ending, Don't Tell Me, Nobody's Home, and He Wasn't.
Since avril has declined to remaster Under My Skin, or make a competent greatest hits tour setlist, I'm doing the lord's work today. Making this video was a true labor of love. I hope you enjoy it!! Comment and let me know your favorite memory from this iconic era x

This is honestly very fitting because when you think about it, Avril Lavigne was kind of the precursor to Taylor Swift: Earnest singer-songwriter teen idol who cultivated a huge following of teenage girls by writing angsty and vulnerable yet still pop-friendly songs from a young girl's perspective, then later went full glossy pop once they hit their 20s. Their career trajectories are very similar.
The main difference is that unlike Taylor, Avril Lavigne never figured out how to grow with her audience or age artistically. And her image change with 2007's The Best Damn Thing, which produced her biggest pop hits and her best selling album, still came at a huge cost as it alienated most of her fans and she never fully won them back. This could have easily been Taylor Swift as well if she wasn't smart enough about how she gradually transitioned into pop stardom. But since 2011, I'd argue that Avril has been stagnant artistically. She's tried to go in a more mature direction both on 2011's Goodbye Lullaby and 2018's Head Above Water, both of which fans didn't like all that much and were critically lambasted. And now we fast-forward to 2022, Avril is an emotionally stunted 38-year-old woman who now knows that her fanbase doesn't want her to grow up and simply wants her to forever be a pastiche to what she was in the 2000s. And since her return to pop-punk with Luv Sux, she has basically been a nostalgia bait.
People always accused Avril Lavigne of being inauthentic, but I'd argue that's more the case now than it was in her heyday.

@@Florian-tg9kc One of her most sold atleast. Let go is one of the most legendary albums and sold more than 16mil copies. Under my skin, over 10mil and The best damn thing over 8mil. After that she basically received the 4th album curse and gradually went underrated

the thing it's that the best damn thing was just image change cause the songs were basically sk8ter boi all over the album, just pink and poppy. The choice of the single was the reason why the best damn thing did star the downfall of her career. Yeah girlfriend was #1 but after that all the single underperformed BESIDES that 2007 was HER year. Then GL and the label problem, she was over when what that hell came.

The impact that Avril had not only in music but in fashion was amazing. It was so easy to dress like her and it was everything I wanted to be. Because it was edgy but not ridiculous (hmm billie) nor slutty. It was for the girls. Not for kids, not for boys. You mentioned this on the twitch stream when you talked about the theory that she was an industry plan to be the anti britney. A guy in 2001 could have never imagined something attractive and attainable for the girls, he would have come out with another britney (many such cases)

Obsessed with this. Avril really was the blueprint! She primed me for becoming a swiftie only 3-4 years later. She was so cool in a way I could only dream about being when I was 9. She was so honest and so young. I will always credit Avril for making me a fan of full albums and listening to them all the way through. Both Let Go and Under my Skin are truly skipless. Thank you for this trip down memory lane, truly - I have such good memories of sitting in my best friend's room while we listened to Under my Skin front to back and discussed what and who must have made Avril so mad lmao. That was my first experience really taking a close look at lyrics and the rest is history.

I saw her in concert with my dad aged 10 in Germany - they had spare VIP places they were giving to kids in the standing area, so we ended up right near the front. I’m a huuuge Avril fan and have been since I was a kid. Under My Skin is my favorite album from her ever, and meant so much to me growing up. I definitely wasn’t the target demographic, but I felt so seen by songs like Take Me Away and Forgotten as a kid. When she didn’t announce a remaster for its 20th anniversary and instead decided to do a greatest hits I was literally so mad at her I can’t even begin to explain. Felt like a slap to her og fans who have been supporting her for years. I saw it on instagram and literally said “no, we don’t want this” out loud. UMS deserves so much more recognition. I got to see her 2 years ago in concert as my first show, and she didn’t play a single thing off this album and I really don’t understand her choices for set lists or what projects she gives attention to.
All this to say, I thank you for giving this album some attention. PS: I am literally so jealous you saw the bones tour as your first concert. I can only imagine how much fun that was.

Hell yes! Watched your discography deep dive on Patreon and it’s one of my favorites! I loved Under My Skin SO much. It defined my sophomore year of high school.
Also used to pretend I was a lost and wayward girl in my room as I played track 7 Nobody’s Home

I'm due for a relisten on this one! Its been awhile. I was OBSESSED with her for the first 2 albums, I was in my late teens at the time. "Don't Tell Me" had such an effect on me, this was actually completely my attitude at the time. My Happy Ending was always my fave, though.

Thank you for this video! As someone who came here originally for swiftologist, i actually really love your videos on other artists that i love too like avril and lana, and analysis of female singers like ariana and miley. IF you
could make a video in the future about the best damn thing i would love to watch it!! I come from a country that almost no one listened to avril, and this was a really safe space to remember how much she influenced me and my music taste🖤

I'm avoiding all tour-related spoilers until my Eras concert in June. Which means I've not watched any of your recent videos or podcast episodes. Soooo happy that you've uploaded something different, I've missed your sense of humour.

Subscribed. Thank you for this video, it validates the worth of this era - her obvious best - and helps me feel like I’m not crazy for the high regard I hold it in. Would love more analyses/reviews of her other eras

I LOVE your commitment to this vid! The eye liner is fire! This album came out when I was in college (I'm old) and I rocked out to it in my car constantly while driving to class, work, and while working out. It's always been a huge favorite.

My Happy Ending is my favorite song off the record and of all time! I am so excited to see Avril live for the first time on September 3rd in Alpharetta, GA, the setlist is disappointing, but I will be rocking out the entire time! I feel you really did this album justice!
I spun my UMS vinyl yesterday to celebrate 20 years, and the album really doesn't have a skip, maybe How Does It Feel, but I still really enjoy that song. I'm still young, 18, but during my childhood, especially around the age of 12 when my depression really started, Take Me Away became my anthem, and it still is to this day. I remember watching all these interview and performance clips years ago. I actually forgot about the Summer Sonic 2004 interview and performance! I love that one so much! My favorite Avril performance is the Live in Budokan! I got the DVD and got a region-free DVD player just to play it since I live in the US. The performance of Freak Out makes it one of my favorites off the album!
Thank you so much for making this video and celebrating an album that will always be in my top 10! I can't believe this album is 20 years old. Also, I am thinking about getting the European Sliver/Black Marbled vinyl that has bonus track, I Always Get What I Want, on it since my copy is only the standard edition. It's US$55 with shipping, so I'm not sure.

My core memory with Avril music was me at 11 years old, listening to Hot on loop and acting as if I was on a cabaret💀
