I love seeing stuff like this, a scratch golfer not hitting his called shot. I think a lot of UA-cam golfers are scared to call their shots ahead of time because we all have a low success rate of hitting those shots and they don’t want to be criticized or something. Makes me feel better when I go for a draw and it comes out dead straight. This video also makes me feel better about how much I leave the driver in the bag when shooting for score, I hit it 310 yards and get bugged all the time about hitting 4 iron off the tee. Driver works but golf courses are made to be tough so they know at that 260-300 yards is the spot to put hazards, almost suckering you into playing it. If you score high try a few rounds at the same course with only irons/hybrids. Also happy to see local Alberta golfers making it in the UA-cam space, keep it up! I loved the fitting with your dad and have learnt lots watching you break down fitting videos.
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for enjoying the channel! It would be easy to edit in perfect shots but I want to be real with you guys. Even tho I try to call a shot it will only happen a handful of times and I’m okay with that, as long as I have the commitment of hitting that called shot.
Just casually crushing it 310 😭
@@zakbutz8226 not all it’s cracked up to be, my dispersion with my driver is too high so a miss on a tight course is a high score. Also I like to think I’m the average weekend golfer so whether I’m 150 yards to the pin or 80 yards to the pin I’m still ending up with the same score. So I’ll just take the 150 yards more often then not because that’s almost guaranteed fairway. I just use my range finder, find the biggest open spot and hit it to there. It is fun to hammer one every so often and carry the 310 and roll out but if it goes wrong I’m really far into the bush lol
Shot my best round 79 in Ohio, on a fairly forgiving course. Only brought the driver out for 2 holes
@@zakbutz8226humble brag… but not sure if it’s even humble lol
Love videos like this! Picked up the game 3 years ago. Gone from shooting 120+ to a 17 handicap currently. Taking my medicine, course management, and not attempting shots out of my skill level have dramatically reduced my scores!
That’s awesome improvement in just a few years! Congrats! 👏🏻 10 cap in no time!
As a born and raised Calgarian and someone who will probably never get the opportunity to play this course, it's awesome to see you play a few holes. Looks like it's pure AF. Would love to see more videos like this!! Well done!
Thank you. Course was in great shape this year.
Great mentality Brandon!! Great stuff for the average golfer who want to lower their handicap.
Love the explanation. Thank you for making the effort!
9:49 as a plus handicap i'd never recommend swinging extra hard. If you're between clubs with no wind hit the club that gives you the best chance to make par. Hit the short club if there's trouble long, hit the long club if there's trouble short. Always put yourself in the best position to make par should you hit a bad shot. You can also choke down on the club to take off 5 yards. I never want to hit a shot extra hard because you'll usually compromise your balance or swing to try and squeeze those extra yards.
Until you club up, hit is less and chunk it or come up short 😉
This video is superb. Was incorporating the tips the whole way during my round yesterday.
Thank you for doing this.
Aspire to be a scratch golfer soon.
How did the round go?!
Appreciate these types of videos!
Played more golf this year than I have in my entire life and finally broke 90, hit driver super well, but push my 4-9 iron right more times then not. (I think I swing harder) but When I’m playing p-L I hit straight and give myself chances to score. So Lost balls on second shots have clouded my mental many times! Good to just take each shot as it is and move forward.
Look forward to more of your videos! 🇨🇦
First off, congrats on all the golf haha! You could look at bending your irons 1-2° upright to help those right misses. Irons could be too flat for you.
@@NewNineGolf playing some 10 year old RBZ High lofts, considering this offseason getting fitted for a new set of irons not sure if cast irons are worth messing with the lie angle 🤷🏼♂️
You should be fine
This is one of the best videos I've seen for good advice. Playing the hole backwards....seems obvious now, but I never have. Also I'm driver obsessed, even though I don't hit it that much further than a long iron. I'm so looking forward to my next round, and just playing shot by shot, and using course management so much more. Thanks for the great advice 👍
Thanks for the feedback. Hope you go low!
Such a relatable video!! I often fight the demons of firing at flags when I have a wedge in my hand. The fact that you held off was very impressive LOL
Just depends on what the miss is. Sometimes going at the flag is the safest shot. Sometimes the greens keeper woke up on the wrong side of the bed and wants to pass on his misery 😂
I'm trying to break 100, but this is still super helpful. I just wish I could get the shanks, topped balls, and total mishits out of my game. I just don't feel like I have control over my shots just yet.
Something that has helped me gain consistent contact is practicing 1/2 and 3/4 shots. Slowing everything down and getting that feel of a well struck ball will translate to your full shots.
I would find a reliable tee club and a mid/short iron you feel most comfortable hitting to keep the ball in play more often. And yes, practicing 1/2 and 3/4 shots is definitely helpful for better contact. As your swing is more consistent, you could work more clubs into your arsenal.
Give yourself an extra 1-2 strokes on par 4 and 5s so you’re not super stressed about shooting the posted par number. You’ll break 100 in no time.
Right now, I don’t hit full shots even on the course. When I hit 3/4 shots/punch shots I find the middle of the face more often and my ground contact is better. I plan on incorporating full iron shots back into my game down the road. I’ve been getting pars and birdies on par 3s recently which never happened in the past.
This video is really well done!
Thank you! Hope it helps
Hey Brandon, just found your channel with this video! Absolutely loved it, the way you talk to the camera is really engaging! Really enjoyed watching this, you have a new fan 🤝
Hey Jonny, I really appreciate you saying that and thanks for the support. Glad you found the channel. 👊
Saw this video and messaged you on instagram about my ball. Thanks for the advice.
Anytime. Hope it helps!
Good advice on checking stance before teeing up the ball on par 3’s. I can’t even count how many times I’ve had to pick it up and re-tee after I think I’m all set to go because my one of feet is in a divot. Not sure why I never thought about this tip before.
Great video, that side at country hills looks more friendly then the house side 😅 I thought the new thing Im golf was to just smash it as close to the green as possible and go from there. I’ll try this approach out for a couple rounds
It all depends on what’s near the green 😉
Great video, thanks!
Hope some of these tips help!
At first I thought your thumbnail was “the golf sidekick”, you are matching his way of the playa
Good job on the video and commentating!
I hear you on course management. For example, I see most higher handicap players make bad decisions on par 5's. So agree. But on the 8th hole, it would seem to me like perhaps you might want to consider something other than your hybrid. It is hard to see on camera, but it seems like with hybrid you actually brought trouble into play, the bunkers. If you are going to club down, then maybe something that will leave you short of the bunkers, still a short iron in. Or, maybe just hit driver pound the snot of out the ball and take those bunkers out of play. Use your driver as a weapon. Again, just my two cents worth based on what I can see from the video! Thanks!
You are 100% correct. I hit the 5H thinking if it did go towards that bunker I would be short. The previous 10x times I played this hole I was fading back to centre or even right side. This day I had the draws which were a little uncommon for my game. Hindsight is 20:20 😂 Took my medicine and at-least avoided a double.
So nice to find a Canadian golfer like yourself - bonus in YYC! 🙌 Curious what you do or suggest to improve over our longer off season, any driving ranges to use or better to stick to practicing in a sim?
Also I've heard a PXG came out with maybe their first 'game improvement' irons - hope you or high hcp reviews/tests it - I'm not personally a fan of the design of PXG irons but getting an option to get free fit/measurement from them in a couple weeks but I know nothing 😅
Golf Future YYC is a heated range you can go to over the winter. They also have coaches if you want lessons. Todd Halpen is the best!
@@NewNineGolf Okay awesome to hear. Sadly I've not been to Golf Future 🙈- last time it was still the RCA, which I want to say was pre-flooding 😬- I've only heard great things about it though. Keep up the great content.
Oohhh goody... got a competitive round tomorrow
Hope it goes well!
Great video and great tips! 🙏
Thank Joe! Hope they help 👊🏻
Seriously brother, could you PLEASE do an instructional video on how YOU hit a driver! You honestly have one of the best and most fluid driver swings on UA-cam.
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’ll make one for ya
@@NewNineGolf That's what I'm taking about!!!
Nice video buddy
Thanks Pal 🙏🏻
Hilarious video. LOL If the average golfer hit their 3 wood 290 in the fairway, we would all be scratch golfers.
Play the white or red tees next time and tell me what you shoot. Honestly curious. I play with alot of players that hit it far and they're not scratch....
Hey awesome vid. Thank you so much. Random but what glasses are you wearing here?

Another great video, I’ve been looking at getting some technology to help me out, is there a rangefinder you’d recommend for a newer/high handicap golfer? Also looking at a watch like that instead. Which one is that?
Thank you! The Bluetee series 3 max is good value. I've used that for a couple years until I recently lost it. Precision pro rangefinders are also good. I was using the titan elite in this video. You can use promo code Newninegolf for either brands. I would stay away from the no name rangefinders. The watch is a Garmin S42.
Juat moved yo Calgary what courses would you reccomend.
Semi Private - Lynx Ridge, Valley Ridge, Springbank Links, Delacour, Water Valley, Murfield Lakes, Inglewood, Redwood Meadows
Private - Country Hills, Glencoe, Priddis, Earl Grey, Cottonwood, Mickelson National, Silver Springs, Bearspaw
my guy! high swing speed like yourself, have a driver and a 4 iron but i need to gap them. Do you recommend woods or hybrids? have the TSR3 still debating if i should have the TSR2 haha
I play both hybrids and a 3 wood so I recommend both! If either of those can increase distance on your 4 iron and stay in play a little more than the driver you’ll have a deadly weapon off the tee. You’re hitting a PW, 9 or 8 iron in vs a sand wedge on par 4s.
SHOOTER!!! Good stuff...I think average golfers should spend more time on course mgmt. than swing perfection....
Could swear you said you hit a fade usually....looking like a draw day to me?
Haha ya it was just one of those days where everything was drawing.
Ive been playing not quite 2 years. And for the last couple months i have been living anywhere from 82-87. A really bad day will wind up being 90-95. Feel stuck where im at and 70's feel so far away. If im hitting it good off the tee and my irons good. Seems like i cant chip or putt. Then some days thats all i can do good is chip and putt. Really want to get in the 70's by next year. But ive got to get more consistency 😂. Its a hell of a game. Feel like i suck but i guess what im shooting right now isnt bad for the amount of time ive been playing.
If you’ve been playing for only 2 years and you’re shooting in the low-mid 80’s you’re already better than 90% of golfers! Thats really impressive. Get some lessons to help with what you’re struggling with and put in the work. 70s in no time!
@@NewNineGolf thanks man! I live in south Carolina, actually about 10 minutes from the bryan bros golf course solina. I think they are supposed to move the teaching school over there also. Thinking about doing some lessons there first part of next year and see how it helps.
What’s your swing speed/ball speed. How did you manage to hit your driver that distance with such an easy swing?
Club head speed is around 118 and ball speed is around 178-180
Not sure why ability and athletically is not more talked about.
Also play from the tees your confident at and work your way back.
2nd hole? - you remembered to use "less than driver" off the tee, but you didn't remember the break in the green?
You think remembering breaks on a green is easier to do than to just think not to hit driver? Really?! 😂
@@NewNineGolf only because you noted that you had played that hole/course many times.
You're right, it's harder to remember the break on a green with multiple undulations.
Driver, Pitching Wedge. You, sir, are eligible for the ball roll back.
Haha that was one of my longest drives on that hole all year. Caught the perfect amount of launch, spin and a healthy wind behind me for that result 😂
@@NewNineGolf That's awesome.
Yeah .. ima buy 10 years worth of balls before they screw us over with silly “roll back” balls
Im just trying to figure out how to get my score under 120+ a round 😅
Set your dad up with a new driver, wood, hybrid like you did his irons
After that take him to the course!
1st hole 377 thats an easy drivable par 4 for you on the simulator
Driven that green a few times actually... 😂
Now only if I could break 90
Same rules apply! Keep that tee ball in play. Avoid hazards like your life depends on it.
Great idea and love the approach, but his tee selection for where he targeted and how bad that 1st putt was was mind-boggling. What are you doing dodging all those hazards for your ONE small landing zone?? Ha. Jesus.
Well that should be easy for you since you hit it farther than rory on your simulator videos
5 hybrid 230.....wow
Too bad you picked a private course that us local guys can’t play. Course management is so key! Taking into account your likely misses. Especially on approach shots!!
I’m a member. You can play with me if you’re a Calgary local.
Wow! I can’t believe you would offer that! I did join modern golf due to the channel, for lessons and sim league. I am a former Golf Tec student. 6 handicap, great content!!
What sunglasses are those
Oakley Castel
The “hit the lesser club harder” approach makes no sense to me and goes against every bit of conventional wisdom I have ever read, seen, or heard.
I think lots of us (probably wrongly) hit far more balls flat out than 3/4 so I think for many it makes perfect sense, especially on the course when under pressure.
Perhaps better terminology I could have used at the time was to say - make sure you hit a shot with acceleration. Sometimes when I try a 3/4 shot I decelerate which causes a chunk. Hitting full insures acceleration. If you opt to go with the 3/4 make sure you accelerate through the ball.
Who is playing with you? Are they wondering wtf are you filming everything!
I make sure the group I’m playing with are okay with me filming. They were very interested in the process of what we do and it didn’t slow anyone down.
No way you’re a scratch golfer
I just enter the scores I shoot and that’s what Golf Canada tells me. My handicap was much lower when I had a -9 63 sitting in there 😉 And when I entered the 81 a couple days later, it didn’t count towards my handicap 😂
omg 15:57 are those middgies?!
They were flys or mosquitos
Great idea and love the approach, but his tee selection for where he targeted and how bad that 1st putt was was mind-boggling. What are you doing dodging all those hazards for your ONE small landing zone?? Ha. Jesus.
Which tee shot are you referring to.
