In my opinion, it is an absolute joy to watch three virtuoso musicians perform live. Rush live is a masterclass in musicianship, it takes the music to another level.

Those few notes they play after the flourish at the end are a riff from Cheech & Chong’s “Earache My Eye.”

That always cracked me up. My marching band in high school would subversively slip that phrase into some of our songs at football games. That and the main riff from "Giant Steps".

That 19 Hz -16Hz bass pedal (where you say oooooohhh!) at the beginning of the solo shakes and vibrates the concrete foundation of my home heater. I am running 2 HSU vtf-15h mk2's and it feels just like that when I felt it live. Sub sonic bass you feel not hear. It knocks the pictures off my walls! ha ha ha

Big Money always sounded great live. Good choice as an opener for this tour. Rush used the Three Stooges Theme for their intro on various tours during this time period. Maybe Signals through HYF. Perhaps even used it before Signals.

Your reactions are genuine and fun. I get a kick out of your facial expressions. That being said, it warms my heart that you seem to genuinely like the band. By that, I mean the quirks. Right down to the promo code of DirkLerxst. Many reactors have done Rush. Most of them enjoy it. Very few actually dive into the band to the level you are. It's very gratifying for long time fans such as myself. It's like you are learning a secret that we've known for a long time.
    Cheers!

I know you have a full plate with going through the Rush discography, but you would get a good laugh at some of their concert video skits. When they changed their format to "An Evening with Rush" and stopped having an opening act. They started to add some videos to begin the show or start the second part of the show. The History of Rush part II and the like are pretty funny and they poke fun of themselves for the most part. Just a thought?
    Take care ✌

Great reaction! I had that on VHS. Bought it when it came out back then. About the intro music; it's actually NOT the three stooges intro music. Lee said in some interview that they made a "similar" type of music since they could not get the license for the actual music. Geddy: ""It's not the original theme because they won't let you use that," Lee explained. "So I hired my friend, violinist Ben Mink, who's a musician extraordinaire and a very big Three Stooges fan, and we had him recreate the original version. The three hellos you hear at the beginning are the three of us talking to him on the phone."" BTW, in the 2112 intro they messed the editing; Alex´s guitar changes black to white to black to white... :-D Perks of combining different days takes, LOL. Great reactions, keep them coming!

As an old graphic design/illustrator I can confirm the illustration style in the intro was considered super-hip in the late 80's. It was the tail end of the Esprit era when everything was super geometric and colorful with lots of calligraphy and painted (or in this case chalk) swooshes. Hugh Syme is yet again credited as art director and designer. That guy was a walking treasure trove of different art styles.
Re: Alex and Geddy's stage moves, at this point the stuff they did together at center stage was always pretty much tongue in cheek. They took that seriously back in the 2112 days, but 10 years later they were obviously well over that kind of thing. By the 80's they'd often mess with each other -- touching the other guy's instrument, telling jokes, making funny faces, doing anything to make it more fun for themselves.
Re: the Wal, I totally agree. Peter Collins was responsible for introducing Geddy to the Wal, although he was already a big Jeff Berlin fan so that also pushed him toward that bass. "Into the 80's his style became even Jazzier and Funkier. This is when his Wal had more Mid-presence and his playing style got even faster which was made possible with the Wal's low action and less tensioned lighter gauge strings." I'm in the audience! It was a strange concert due to fact that Rush, who were regular visitors to the UK, left a gap of 5 years from 1983 to 1988. Some fans were under the impression that they'd split up, as the last tour was the Signals tour, full of classic songs. Since then, there had been 3 albums where the sound of the band had changed drastically, and there was IMO lukewarm reaction to some of these songs and fans were disappointed at the lack of the 'epics'.

    • @johnglynhughes4239

I was there the night before and concur. When they next toured the UK in 1992 (Presto) I was shocked that the venue was approx 1/3 empty...
There was something of a resurgence in the 00's ...they were bigger than ever!

  • @surfeit5910

As a guitarist, I disagree. I like the Wal simply because the individual notes are distinguishable from each other. The Jazz bleeds them all together into one tone, which has its own place, but not for songs where a person is going crazy essentially playing leads riffs in the thing!
But anyway, THIS album is what changed me from "liking Rush" to becoming an actual fan. I heard a lot of the songs thanks to my friends at the time, and thought they were good, but I was listening to a lot of bands that used their "studio magic" to make their playing sound 10 times better than it was. I was sort of in the mindset that Rush sounded good, but it was thanks to all of the mixing and editing in the studio. When I saw them actually play the songs which I thought were impossible to recreate live I became an instant fan.

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  2 роки тому

imo that's a different type of issue. Listen to Jaco play a jazz bass you hear every note he's playing.
That's interesting and I get that. Later on in this album I poke the bear regarding how they do things live. This is a great sounding live album of them.
