How To Repair the Input Jack for a Roland Micro Cube Guitar Amplifier

- I show how to repair the input jack for a Roland Micro Cube Guitar amplifier for less than $20. A common problem with this type of amplifier, is that the input jack is easy to crack. Also, the plastic nut that holds it in place, can easily loosen, which can cause damage when plugging your guitar chord in. After repeated use after 6 years, I cracked the input jack and could no longer use the amp. I decided to try and repair it myself, instead of buying a new one. I called Roland, described the parts I needed and they sent me new ones. The jack and nut cost around $5 each plus shipping. It took about 5 days for the parts to arrive after ordering. just wanna say massive thank you - i have just soldered the input jack in the older style micro cube. The input jack on that one has 4 pins which i wonder is 'stereo' - regardless i soldered the way you suggested and it works perfect (as guitar is mono). May i please say this solution works for the older micro cube and the new micro cube as well - my amp is good as new now
for me the biggest faff was to desolder all three points to dislodge the input jack - almost had to wrench it out with one hand on the jack and the other on the iron - i am a very basic amateur on soldering and electronics
TOTAL TIME TAKEN - it took literally 3 minutes to open the amp and 45 minutes wasting time on taking the jack off carefully (without breaking) - soldering in was 5 minutes and screws back in literally in 2 minutes
Great input that I hope others read. I'm happy to hear you were able to get your amp working again. Regarding soldering, I decided to invest into a Hakko soldering station and it changed my life. I thought it was a little pricey, but watched videos that said a proper soldering irons were important, but I had no idea how much a good soldering iron, with adjustable temperature controls and fast heating, would improve my soldering skills. Heres a fix for you if you lost the nut and the jack is floating just inside the panel.....unscrew the panel.....take a nut off the back of the amp, there are two attached to two jacks which are not as critical and do not take nearly as much abuse as the main input jack. Push the jack thru the panel with you hand and hold it. Put the nut from the back onto the input jack. I used some superglue to help hold the jack in the hole while I screwed the nut on. Take the remaining nut off the back, go to the hardware store and match the threads to a metal nut. Buy 3 and replace the plastic ones. Another idea is to remove the crappy plastic jack, or just leave it in place. Mount a proper metal jack on the top of the amp, on the panel or thru the tolex, by drilling a hole, and mounting with proper metal hardware. Wire the new jack into the old one, or to where the old one connected to the circuit board. This is the best fix as the plastic jack directly mounted to a circuit board is a shitty design, and failure is a given at some point in time.

Thanks dude. And to anyone having trouble. I am working on the micro cube bass rx. basically all the same. It's a pain pulling out the guts. I kept thinking that I had to take more screws out. Just get some flatheads and pry it out. It may chip a little, but start at the bottom and slide them up. It just takes a bit. I didn't even have to buy a new input part. It just got moved so out of place that i couldn't plug in.

I just opened one of these to spray the controls with deoxit from them being scratchy and a bad volume pot replacement and I will tell you they are a huge pain to pop open after they have been sitting for years baking outside. The glued on rubber stuff they use on the inside of the metal to make it fit snug over time melts in such a way to make it next to impossible to pull apart without shoving a long knife along the top sides and under the top plate and/or taking a hair dryer to it like you said in a reply. Takes a ton of prying but eventually I wiggled the chassis out. Takes patience and very easy to accidentally scratch or bend the metal when doing it.

I had to fix the battery compartment and was struggling with taking this thing apart. I knew it had to come apart, but I didn't want to EEF it up.

Yes, it can be difficult. I have found out that using a hair dryer will help soften the glue, or whatever they use. Although, now you have it apart, so it shouldn't be as difficult when you need to take it apart again. Thanks for watching!

Good stuff. This is now happening with my Cube Street. Not sure if it's Broken - it just keeps getting Loose? I'm more Impressed that you were actually able to get in Contact with Roland? Now, Thats no small task!!! They used to give customer service - now I guess they got too big? I can still call Strymon or Taylor and get Help. It's changed my perception about Boss/Roland.
I've heard from a few people that they weren't able to get through and buy the replacement part. If Roland doesn't get onboard with the DIY movement for especially the guitar industry, other companies are going to become more popular with customers. Especially since this fix is not that difficult. My amp still works perfectly. You might be able to use a regular metal input jack, but you'd have to caefully solder wires to fit the small circuitboard it mounts to. FYI - I bought a Monoprice tube amp and a Spark for practice and donated this amp to a local guitar teacher who has a few kids that need an amp. This is a great video! After looking extensively for similar problems and unlike this video my issue is with the auxiliary input or as Roland calls it the i-cube link jack makes horrific popping noises. This amp has been babied and I bought it new. I can see the 1/8 jack has a split in it. I verified the problem by using another factory cable from the dealer I bought it from. I'm hoping that this fix kills both (annoying) birds with one stone. The other problem is very intermittently the amp seemed to have very poor signal to noise ratio, but it's an oddball thing where the noise floor is very high and signal is low kind of thing. I'd suspect a bad ground if I didn't know better but like I said it's been babied and in like new condition.

Steven Parente the amp I own is an 80GX which is a lot more robust than the micro cube! I took it apart after looking everywhere for some guidance and was pleasantly surprised by the build quality of the PCB'S, layout, wiring, heat sinks etc but what really shocked me is the construction of the speaker cabinet itself. The speaker driver is the only component I'm wary of but as long as I don't get it wet (outside gigging) it should be ok. Thank you for your reply and the great UA-cam channel! I travelled in a Christian Band and was blessed to travel lite with Roland Cube amp.and monitor speaker easy to carry and store in van.plus the sound ok.

Nicely done. Could you figure out adding an AUX IN jack, 1/8" to the Micro Cube? Roland missed on including it originally.
Thank you for watching curtzblues! Try using an adapter. That's how I plug my headphones in to the Cube. They cost around $3-$7. If you run a search, you'll find Sweetwater, Amazon and several other sites that sell various types.
That I've done. I'd like to play mp3 backing tracks while I play w/o a mixer etc.
Just tried to order it from Roland. They no longer will sell parts to us and want everyone to take their poorly made products to their authorized service centers. Burgera amps are not expensive and have metal input jacks!

Thanks for the post Steve. Just wondering what size and model the input jack is for replacement? My plastic nut has cracked. I've tried an M12 metric nut however I believe it's Imperial and only screws one turn before locking up
It's a 1/4" 6.35mm Mono jack and it has 3 pins that attach to the circuit board. When I ordered from Roland, the part number was @/13449275 and the nut @/22150756. I had the links in my description, but Roland has removed those links since I created this video. I recently found the same jack on eBay at: www.ebay.com/itm/192474346301.

Roland amp 30x version. I am having trouble getting the panel removed so I can repair the input Jack port.
Aloha Cat Feeder. If you are talking about removing the panel from the amp, it can be difficult, because there's adhesive. I have used a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive, which can make it easier. Thanks for watching.
I opened mine to spray the volume pot.
Had some trouble getting it out but ok once seal broke.
The black speaker wire came unplugged ok but i couldn't get the red off and not much slack there so i worked with it connected. The Black is quite difficult to reconnect when reassembling... need long nose pliers.
My volume pot , or something , was causing the volume to drop in and out at the lowest volume.
So I sprayed my volume pot with a WD40 brand of contact cleaner. I also sprayed the gain pot. I got no improvement.
Wish i hadn't touched the gain pot as there nothing wrong with it!
These pots, or the axles, seem to have something in / on them that creates a bit of resistance, so the control feels smooth and needs slight pressure to turn it . But once sprayed, or perhaps oversprayed in my case? not sure? the resistance has now gone and turning these 2 pots feel too free now, not loose but too easy to turn up and down, they don't feel right compared to how they were, and i still have the volume cutting in and out at low volume.
Thanks for watching and posting your own experience in opening up your amp. This should be very helpful for others reading these posts. I've never tried spraying the pots or modifying. I didn't experience the volume dropping out on my amp, although some people said you can replace with off the shelf pots, but I've never tried this. I don't have this amp anymore. I have cleaned volume and tone pots on my guitars, using Deoxit, but very sparingly.
sir, can you help me. I have roland 30x. The switch rotary for effect doesnt work properly. When i rotate the effect doest change, it just come out with dist. Roland 30x have 8 effect but wherever i rotate it just come out with dist effect. Can you help me what i should do to fix it? thx

I have a weird problem with mine when a strum a chord and let it ring out it is wavey like it's losing signal... Cuts sounds choppy not clean normal distain. Anyone no? It's not my patch Cord either
wanted to open mine to clean the pots because the volume would fluctuate at very low values, and the amp just wouldn't open, it's like the foam turned into glue. ended up spraying contact cleaner inside the potentiometer shaft and it seems to have solved it. did yours have any issues with volume fluctuations at any point? I saw this happen on both microcubes I own
No that didn't happen with my amp, although the volume and tone knobs on guitars need cleaning in Hawaii often. I use DeoxIT D5 contact cleaner. If it's difficult to open the amp in the future because of the foam, you can heat with a hair dryer and it makes it easier. My Microcube RX doesn't work on batteries, but does work via power adapter. Do you have any idea what the matter could be?
I have never used batteries in my amp before. Did you check to make certain your batteries were good? I've bought new batteries a couple of times (on sale and they were old) some were bad. When you look at the battery compartment, do you notice any broken connections? You might take it to a electronics tech in your local area and they might be able check it out without charging too much.
Was the replacement jack plastic as well?
Yes, the replacement that Roland sent was plastic and fit perfectly into the pc board. I suppose if I was electrically inclined, I could have used a metal jack and figured out how to add some jumper wires, but I'm not! It''s been fine since I made this video! (4 years). How did u know what was broken? In my case, i plug the guitar to the amp, and it makes static noise, so I'm sure the jack is hooked, but i don't get any feedback off my guitar at all, just static noise from the jack being plugged in.
Aloha Dante. Just before the jack completely went out, it would make static sounds, but I would get the sound of the guitar when I jiggled the input. Then it went out completely. Also the plastic input nut cracked. I took the amp apart and it was visibly broken from the circuit board. But I also checked the guitar chord, because I have had problems in the past, where the guitar chord broke at the plug and I had to re-solder the guitar chord jack. Be sure to check your chord before taking apart the amp. Cut off the shrink wrap, if your chord has that and unscrew and check that the chord wires are properly soldered to the plug. It's possible they've been soldered, but I haven't looked inside that model. Do the terminals looks like, spade style connecters? Not sure what's up with mine, but when I use the Classic or Rectifier amps on low volume, there's like a noise gate thing going on, where the volume starts to break up. If I turn up the volume it seems to be ok, but sometimes I need to play quietly and tis is annoying. I sprayed out the volume pot as best I could without de-soldering it from the circuit board, but it still happens. Any ideas? Anyone else have this issue?
Yes, it can be difficult. I've found that some people warm the area with a hair dryer, which softens the glue. As far as the tone breaking up at various settings, I usually practice within the stack settings and adjust tone, gain and volume, both on the amp and my guitar. Also a little reverb, delay and sometimes chorus. It's not perfect, but good enough for practice. Right now, I'm researching and trying decided on a performing amp. I've been watching a lot of Rig Rundowns from premierguitar.com.
@@StevenParente So, no idea what this volume breakup issue might be? Hopefully not a circuit board issue. Great practice amp otherwise. I wish it had an fx level control, but for the price and tone options, it's pretty sweet. Had this thing 10 years already.
Lots of options out there for live amps. I have a Mini Rectifier and it's amazing. Plenty of volume and lots of tone choices, plus the size factor. I use it with a 1x12 cab and it's perfect for any size club. Mini Hughes & Kettner is great too.
@@sbrave No, I don't know. I have read and watched many reviews by performing musicians and have several friends that have performed over the years. They seem to prefer tube amps because of the harshness of many solid state amps. Then I've heard some reviews that say they like solid state amps, but those amps are just as pricey as the tube amps. This little Roland cost only $150 and I also bought it about 10 years ago and I play with headphones because I live in a condo. A friend of mine, Larry Dupio, who was awarded a Hoku award last year for best blues album in Hawaii, plays with a Fender super sonic plus, which is discontinued. But Larry sounds amazing and doesn't use any pedals. I saw one for sale recently in Hawaii for $800 with an ATA case. Couldn't afford it, but what a great sounding amp!

Aloha Gabriel, it's not easy. It took a while for me to pry it out. It seems like they used a glue of some kind. Make sure all the screws are out.
Also, trying warming the area with a hair dryer to loosen the glue!
Pull the speaker out of the front and you'll better access to push on it while pulling.
do you know/can you please tell me what size is the threaded nut that goes with this particular input jack?
because for whatever reason,most likely my not using a 90 degree cable when i'm too lazy to go look for one)i seem to break them..and to my dismay it's not the same size as any i've found around the house..i thought that it'd be just a regular old stock 1/4" threaded nut that that goes on sayyy,an effects pedal,or a synth,but it's not..i'm guessing because mabe the plastic is so thick? i don't know..
long story short i just want to replace them..any help or info you could send mine and everyone else's way,since your page pops near the top when fumbling in the dark googling this particular question,would be super appreciated.

There is an t800mal 250v fuse on the side of the power board.
Are the input jacks the same model on all CUBE products?
I'm not sure, I only own the one model. I suspect not, because it's mounted on a pcb board and I would guess they've made changes over the years. I bought this amp about 9 years ago. But I really don't know. Try contacting Roland and see if they'll help out. They did when I called them. But a couple people said they called and Roland wasn't sending parts to unauthorized dealers or repair facilities anymore. Maybe they sent to me because I live in Hawaii and I don't think they have an authorized repair facility. They do have the parts and it's really cheap. The shipping was more than the jack.
@@StevenParente I was asking because I broke the nut for my rx input jack today. I took it apart and they seem to be the same. Luckily the engineers at Roland seem to have recognised that mounting the input directly to the main board was a stupid idea and gave it it's own assembly.
That’s good. I hope you can replace easily. It was a bad design and really brittle. But the sound and output for a practice amp is really great.

@@StevenParente thank you for your good advice. question: my amp is the micro cube with the four little speakers (stereo) the jack just disappeared with the plastic ring floating up top unscrewed/broken--if i cant obtain a replacement roland jack is there a generic jack that can be employed? also above someone mentioned he used the headphone jack, is that a last resort if the roland part is no longer for sale to public? and finally adding a completely new metal jack is viable? i love this amp so much and be willing to spend some money on it--but im clueless on electronics and repair etc
@@Petrom714 Aloha! I suggest a couple of ideas, especially if you are unfamiliar with electronics. First, I recommend you set up an account with Roland and contact their tech support about your broken jack. Find out what they suggest. Go to www.rolandus.com/support/ and click email support. You'll need to set up an account. My second suggestion is to search online for your area and "your town electronics repair". A standard jack may work and a electronics technician may be able to solder it to the existing board. You can get an estimate from both Roland and your local repair shop and see if it's less expensive than buying a new amp. Best wishes and thanks for watching!

when your input jack broke, was there no sound at all?
It's been a while, but I recall it being noisy at first. When it broke completly I think it hummed and then no sound. When I moved the guitar jack around, I could visibly see the input on the amp was broken. Thanks for watching Patrick!

I haven't had this problem, but it sounds like the selector switch, which has other boards attached to it. I'd suggest contacting Roland's support number, or contact them online. I listed their website and the last phone number I used, in my description (above). Click "SHOW MORE".

Help i'm trying to unplug the red wire but it's stuck and i'm only opening the amp because it won't work pressing the button and nothing happens
Are you talking about the red speaker wire Mohammed? It should be a friction connector and slide off. But there may be a bit of corrosion over the years. Apply WD40 to the connection, or similar product like Break Free for a few minutes. That should help. Thanks for watching!

Aloha Dymi. 6 years ago when I made the video, I ordered the input jack from Roland. Some have said they won't sell it anymore, but you might look up their most recent contact information and ask. The parts number that I posted under the comments are the I ordered. I ran an online search using the parts numbers and found a few listings. You can probably find the nut also. @@dymipasha2051 It might be similar, but it would be best to find a parts list for your amp model and serial number. I did a quick search for the Roland Cube 30. Find the input jack and make a search specifically for the jack's part number/. @@StevenParente Before seeing your ebay link here I bought that exact item and didn't notice until now that it only has 3 pins, not 4. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I don't suppose the 4th is unneeded?
@@MaynardState I don't know and no one has mentioned this. When I made this video, I was able to order directly from Roland, but I don't think they sell like that anymore. You could try. It's not uncommon for parts to be fabricated to work in multiple products and maybe one of the four pins were redundant. Usually you only need a positive lead and a ground for a mono jack. My jack had four pins and I would assume there's a purpose for all four. You could check to see if your 3 pin jack lines up with three of the holes on the board, and if they do, solder it in and see if it works. If it doesn't, de-solder it and look online for a manual and parts list for your specific amp. Then use that part number to search online.

I like your accordion playing John. I was able to salvage a couple of old tapes of my Grandfather and digitized the audio. Check out Joe Parente Playing Accordion on my channel. You might enjoy it. He died in 1999. He typed in some of the songs on "tape A", but I've been trying to figure out the songs on tape B.

I'm telling you. I spent AN HOUR trying to get the friggin electronics out. I ended up resorting to pouring alcohol down the adhesive and it finally gave out🥲
Yes, depending on how old the amp is, or how hot the climate is in your locality, it can be difficult. Some people say that using a hair dryer to heat it up helps. It sounds like the alcohol worked though. Thanks for watching and hope you were able to fix your amp!
