being a supra owner myself, by removing the cat you are running about 22psi of boost because there is no back pressure to regulate the boost. the breaking up your hearing is the car running to lean and fuel cutting. If you keep driving the car like that then you'll blow your turbos. Get a restrictor ring for the downpipe which will regulate your boost at 17.5-18psi and then get a mines ecu which is a plug and play ecu with a map for 17.5psi of boost. With this set up youll make about 400hp.
Creesic You completely ignored the (being a supra owner myself) I would much rather trust an owner of a Supra than someone who thinks it could be something.
He needs a fuel cut defender, uprated 255+ fuel pump and a restrictor ring and maybe an electric boost controller and set the boost to about 1.2ish bar
TJ you seriously need to read your comments dude. If it was as tough as you say it was to find. I told you the US and JDM front cat delete were different and where to find that in a previous video. Take advice from Supra owners. We’re here to help you. Also hopefully you saw my comment about the restrictor ring to prevent overboost. In the Supra community there are some that say you don’t need it but from my personal experience my stock twins went because I didn’t have one
Hey Tokyo JZA80, which downpipe would you go with? I was confused for the longest time, because the HKS midpipe is called a downpipe on the internet, but it is not the whole thing. Apparently, HKS doesn't have an actual downpipe available. From this video, he's using an Autobahn88 downpipe. Never heard of it. I have the same exact exhaust that TJ has that I put on three years ago. HKS Carbon Ti. Unlike TJ, I will run a restrictor ring, I think between the 1st decat and the 2nd. I'd appreciate your help. Thanks.
I ran a 4inch straight pipe all the way back up until July. I personally loved the sound but it was so loud that sometimes we would get threatened about being kicked off the track. My sponsor ended up doing a down turn angle that helped out a little bit but then we went to the Sports Land Yamanashi track and got kicked off there for noise. Another sponsor came in and gave us a new titanium concept but I haven’t seen the car since I’ve been visiting in the U.S. I’m hoping the noise is more tame now.
Love it! Few things tho for anyone doing BPU upgrades to their 2J's 1) upgrade to a 255+lph fuel pump to stop the engine from leaning out because of the extra boost 2) smaller gap spark plugs (.8) 3) the ecu will begin to cut fuel after 1 bar (14.7psi) as a safety precaution (note that the stock JDM twins can safely boost to 17psi) you'll need a fuel cut defender (hks) Do all 3 of the above at the same time for best performance! Also note that if you delete all the cats (straight pipe basically;) ) then you'll overboost to about 19-20 Psi. Keep an eye on your boost gauge cuz if you keep boosting the stock JDM ceramic blades over 17psi then you'll wear them out A LOT FASTER!
On the jdm twins you will need some kind of restrictor ring or ecu to control boost because the turbos are ceramic and you dont want to push them past 17-18psi. You can install a HKS fuel cut defender to sort out your fuel cut issues as the ecu will cut fuel at around 12-13psi as a fail safe. I have just gone through the same thing on my jdm twin turbo supra.
Nolan Canale literally has already stated he’s not gonna keep it stock brah. Said it would be cool to keep it stock & in good condition but it would be funner to go full send.
My JDM 2jzgte did the same thing, it’s fuel cut. When you run a straight pipe exhaust without a restrictor you push past 14psi on the stock turbos and hit fuel cut via the ecu.
Yes, it would. I would love to see that. I would like to see Blackwidowsupra go head to head with this car out here in Maryland Called Alpha X. His car is so loud he broke my mic. The mic can't really pick how loud he is.
Sound good Teej. Big part of the reason that it's still so quiet is because the factory turbos run in sequential mode, so until 4000rpm or so, all the exhaust essentially comes through only one turbo. 5 minutes with some vacuum tubing can convert it to a standard twin turbo configuration (often called TTC by Supra guys) which will make it much louder as well as get rid of the dip in power in the midrange. Down the road, running hybrid turbos in the factory spot in TTC mode means you could run 500+whp in a car that could look completely stock under the hood, preserving how clean it currently is and being a little more unique than a single turbo build
These cars don’t need a “tune” like modern ECU cars do. What he needs is a boost cut defender to bypass boost cut, and an electronic boost controller to control boost. No “tune” needed. (-previous MK3 Turbo and MKIV Twin-Turbo 6-speed owner)
The breaking up is fuel cut. You get it on stock JZs when you remove the downpipe cat because the turbos regulate waste gate pressure from exhaust back pressure therefore it's over boosting. You can buy restrictor rings for them or you can get a decent boost controller to get round it.
Hey Tj at 7:45 you mention that you don't have the sound you want. If you want it to be loud you need to replace the Y-pipe coming off the turbos. The problem in doing this the turbos have so much room to breathe and the car will over boost. These turbos are sequential and recirculate. There is a way to bypass this and the turbos will spool faster.
JZ's run a 10-11afr straight piped. It will be fine.. All JDM cars run extra rich from factory and Supras, JZX's and Aristros have self learning ECU's.
No exactly true, there more to it than “just tune it” as you will need a aftermarket Ecu, and trying to control factory twins is a headache. He needs to just get the boost cut defender/fuel cut defender to fix his issues.
You don't map a car for putting an exhaust on. He needs a restrictor ring to control the boost of the stock twins and a FCD if he wants to raise the boost. You do realise the JZ ECU's were pretty advance for their time? There are people running 800bhp on the factory ECU without a retune.
you answered before i could. I was going to say it might be hitting fuel cut or boost cut. almost like the ecu hitting "rev" limit early. built in fail safes for fuel and overboosting. apexi used to make the SAFC for those guys running stock ecu's.
The car is leaning out mate and chances are you’ll blow your twins up pritty quickly if you leave it like that. You need a restrictor ring for the exhaust as JDM twins have ceramic internals that cannot handle the boost pressure your straight pipe is allowing them to reach. I also recommend closer gapped spark plugs. You will also 100% need a fuel cut defender. HKS make these. I have one in my 93 TT6. A 4” front mount intercooler will also help the car to breath much better. This will all bring you to what we call BPU which should give you around 400hp. Invest in a ECU that’s tuneable like a Mines or in my opinion a syvecs and you should squeeze around 430-450hp. (At this power however your twins will be on borrowed time. But when look on the bright side, when they die there’s no better excuse for going single)
As the owner of a RHD mkiv Supra, you need a restrictor ring between the downpipe and midpipe on JDMs. You're probably hitting like 22+psi and leaning out. If it's an ODB2 car, those have a lean spot also around 6000 rpm.
Probably already been said but that break up is it hitting the 1 bar fuel cut. On a jspec (jdm) supra you need to run a restrictor plate in the exhaust when decatting. If you want it louder on idle and lower rpm look up ttc mode. Loving the supra on the channel 👌
Hey Teeg My understanding is as pressures increase, the need for a stronger spark increases. A local here is running stock ignition with 13 PSI no problem. As soon as he brings it to 15, it breaks up on him. Same thing with me, which is why I run an amp. The density of the a/f I think at higher boost pressures causes the spark not to jump across the electrodes or at least avery weak spark. The voltage from the ignitor to the coils in stock form is too weak to do the job (in most higher boost cases)
Apathity I’ve been having this same problem with my Audi being fully straight piped and I hear it and feel it breaking up in hirer rpms at revs and driving. I changed to colder spark plugs and r8 coil packs seems to not changed anything
I'm a new subscriber and I would just like to say that I give you guys much props for actually doing the work to the vehicles yourselves building your own Vehicles instead of buying a vehicle already built always remember built not bought
(Still needs more loud) but FINALLY this was probably the first thing I said you should have done when you wanted to do an “exhaust” but put that Prius exhaust on the supra instead 😂🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
If this is the same thing that I have on my 1JZ NON VVTI , what you are experiencing is boost cut, stock JZ's have a tendancy to go past the 14.3psi limit for the boost cut to engage, this is caused by your exhaust being bigger...
Love the video!! TJ has inspired my buddies and I to get out of our comfort zone and begin our journey working on cars and vlogging! Thanks again TJ, We are beginning to move forward!!
Most 90's Toyota's had boost cuts up around the 14psi if you don't just hit fuel cut beforehand. If you want a quick fix you can buy a HKS Fuel Cut Defencer for around $130, it helps raise the factory fuel cut level. Don't know if factory wastegate puts it higher than available fueling but should be fine.
I had the exact problem with the sputtering under heavy load on my r34, I tried swapping in LS coils, new plugs, checked my fuel pump...at the end it was just the cam/crank angle sensor.
Hey TJ, the part you’re after is a greddy boost cut defender and also fuel cut defender. There are copies out there that do the same job. This will be due to higher boost as raddan said, the twins rely on that back pressure and is a common issue with aftermarket exhausts on stock twins. Also would recommend a boost controller and gauge so you can see what boost will actually spike to so you can limit it and not send your turbos into oblivion.
It needs a single turbo, the exhaust manifold on the twin turbos are super restrictive, also like you said its hard to get sound out of 2 baby turbos. Also doing any mods to a turbo car without tuning is very dangerous.
Hey TJ, that stutter could be a missfire as well. On my R33 it had the same issue, found that i had a crack in the ceramic in spark plug no.3. I changed the spark plugs and upgraded to toyota yaris coil packs and didnt have the same problem again. My plugs are gapped to a .63 (metric) for a stronger spark
Same thing just happened to me, I have a 2003 vw Gti and I had the muffler and res removed. It would make the exact “backfire” noise. My spark plugs were the only thing wrong. I had a misfire and I had already assumed that it was running lean or rich.
It’s not that, he’s just experimenting and taking the build slowly. Later on, tj will probably go big with a fair sized single turbo swap but nothing too ridiculous to keep the value of the car. He definitely won’t do any cutting on the body but it’s going to be a nice supra build... just give him time
Just the fact that you continually say "straight piped" and it has a muffler proves what kind of car guy you are......or aren't. Please, keep doing pulls so you blow the 2j up because you don't understand what changing exhaust does to a car.
Been waiting for this part to be installed in a vid. Now, just waiting for those other "goodies" you got; & the vids to follow😏😊. Calving, am now picturing you with Pom Poms & cheering.......oh my😱 Cheers, A✌🏻️
tj i'm not trying to be a jerk or a dickehead but i paused the video at 4:18 and that downpipe part you could just built your own. Calvin knows how to weld and its a sort easy part to make so you could just have built your own. Also sorry if my english are shitty but i'm still learning. I know how to fab stuff but i don't know so good the english language lol. Yes i'm an 15 year old og subscriber since you were in Calvins garage. Much love from Greece
In the 335i world the first things to check would be spark plugs, coil packs then injectors but the n54 is DI so not 100% sure if PI will have the same issues.
Try a researching a fuel cut defender for the supra. Decatting a FC rx7 required this little plug and play box as the FC would do the exact same thing under boost in the upper rpm range.
You have a higher flow of air leaving the engine without thinking about the flow of air and burn in the engine. My advice is a hi flow intake a new fuel rail with higher rating injectors also tuning is key.
TJ that factory manifold is killing tons of noise, get a tubular manifold to the turbos, that’ll make it tons louder. Also twin turbos are much quieter than one.
Your issue sounds exactly like the limp limiting mode when knock sensors go funky and/or coil packs go out. At least it’s really similar to the RB2xDET’s do
Sounds like a bad coil or plug so ur getting a misfire maybe. Thats exactly what happened in my b7 audi a4. Sounded exactly the same. Changed out all my coils and spark plugs and fixed the issue. Hope this helps
Teej, been in your position with the same exact car. Your issue is the twins. Because your turbos are still sequential, second turbo is restricting all your flow (noise) When I went true twin turbo, noise significantly improved. A single will make your car unbearably loud now lol
Over boosting because having the catless downpipe you need a tune with it I went through the same problem. Eventually you want to get a new ecu the stock ecu isn’t that smart lol.check you coils and spark plugs. Once you get it tuned it will solve the over boosting problem
I had that problem on my R33 skyline where if I hit a certain RPM it sounds like it's hitting limiter and stuttering, a simple coil pack upgrade and spark plug change made it like new if not better.
TJ, it’s got a muffler, you would be surprised how much that will muffle even an after market muffle. Straight pipe that and tune it and it’ll sound amazing and spit mad flames
That sputtering noise means you need to do a tune up. Change spark plugs and coils. Had the same issue when my sc300 valve cover gasket flooded my spark plugs
Definitely check your spark plugs, the coil pack connectors tend to go bad in supras. If you need help I recommend you to watch the recent Lowcals video where they explained how to do it
If the break up happened after the straight pipe then yeah it’s probably leaning out under boost..lack of back pressure i assume but I’m sure u will get a AFR gauge so if that’s the case then u know what to do from there
Teeg I think the over boost is correct however I think ignition cut would be more accurate fuel cut would leave an even leaner condition causing fuel knock or ping. Not familiar with Toyota especially Supra (nice).needs the dyno and butt sniffer in pipe.
When it breaks up in my opinion I feel like the turbos might have a little bit of play and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have a bov so the turbos waste pressure just goes back in to the turbo so the turbo has to chop it up at night pressures and you might also be running lean and the reason why I say it may not have a bov is cause my Supra didn’t come with one when it was stock
You can get a Fuel cut defender but it will just fool the ecu and is not a good course of action unless you have some method of adding some more fuel where its needed. Why fit autobahn88 parts, I thought this build was going to be well thought out?
deep growl sounds good but i like too much louder.Maybe you can change all exaust system(going to some exxpensive)or you can change really high quality air intake system , wastegate , blow off valve ,aftermarket high quality spark plugs, injection system (bigger than stock one)etc. LOVES FROM TURKEY

If this is the same thing that I have on my 1JZ NON VVTI , what you are experiencing is boost cut, stock JZ's have a tendancy to go past the 14.3psi limit for the boost cut to engage, this is caused by your exhaust being bigger...
How do pass cali smog for all these straight pipes?
Zach Beydoun you know a guy who will pass it for you if you slip him some money
Love the video!! TJ has inspired my buddies and I to get out of our comfort zone and begin our journey working on cars and vlogging! Thanks again TJ, We are beginning to move forward!!
trd wing and single turbo, all I have to say
Most 90's Toyota's had boost cuts up around the 14psi if you don't just hit fuel cut beforehand. If you want a quick fix you can buy a HKS Fuel Cut Defencer for around $130, it helps raise the factory fuel cut level. Don't know if factory wastegate puts it higher than available fueling but should be fine.
Don't keep doing pulls with it running bad breaking up you'll end up breaking something like
Jonny 250 like what?
Jo Louie
Jonny 250
Actually that’s how you blow turbos
Over boosting
I had the exact problem with the sputtering under heavy load on my r34, I tried swapping in LS coils, new plugs, checked my fuel pump...at the end it was just the cam/crank angle sensor.
sounds like a 5vz-fe
😂😂 he's right 😂😂 the 3.4L 4runner with a flowmaster 😂
Austin Grullon
Those are amazing swaps for mr2’s
Connoisseur Of Cars Tig Ol Bitties & VJ’s have u seen a 2gr in a mr2 😂
Hey TJ, the part you’re after is a greddy boost cut defender and also fuel cut defender. There are copies out there that do the same job. This will be due to higher boost as raddan said, the twins rely on that back pressure and is a common issue with aftermarket exhausts on stock twins. Also would recommend a boost controller and gauge so you can see what boost will actually spike to so you can limit it and not send your turbos into oblivion.
Get a intake system
It needs a single turbo, the exhaust manifold on the twin turbos are super restrictive, also like you said its hard to get sound out of 2 baby turbos. Also doing any mods to a turbo car without tuning is very dangerous.
Why does it have to be so loud? It’s nice as it is
Needs a deeper tone
He wants to rice it out
Jack Morton you don’t know what rice is
Because racecar.....I guess lol. I liked it the way it was.
I thought TJ said he’d keep it stock as much when he got it. Guess he changed his mind
Dayummm
Miquel Jones your 1st
Same thing just happened to me, I have a 2003 vw Gti and I had the muffler and res removed. It would make the exact “backfire” noise. My spark plugs were the only thing wrong. I had a misfire and I had already assumed that it was running lean or rich.
Sell that Supra. N buy beater Supra u can build from ground up
BLACK SANTA That’s just ridiculous, no hard feelings bro.👍
Sergio no it’s because he has to keep everything stock
BLACK SANTA Who said that?
Sergio he did because soon as he wants a widebody or something everybody gone start crying ITS A CLEAN SUPRA DONT RUIN IT
It’s not that, he’s just experimenting and taking the build slowly. Later on, tj will probably go big with a fair sized single turbo swap but nothing too ridiculous to keep the value of the car. He definitely won’t do any cutting on the body but it’s going to be a nice supra build... just give him time
I'd check your harness for your coil packs as well, they tend to arc after a split from being so old
Just the fact that you continually say "straight piped" and it has a muffler proves what kind of car guy you are......or aren't. Please, keep doing pulls so you blow the 2j up because you don't understand what changing exhaust does to a car.
You are really doing it right with the supra. All it really needs now is just power
My civic sounds louder
hey brother i just started youtube is there anyway you can check me out and show the channel some love!? thnxs for your time bro!
Been waiting for this part to be installed in a vid.
Now, just waiting for those other "goodies" you got; & the vids to follow😏😊. Calving, am now picturing you with Pom Poms & cheering.......oh my😱
Cheers, A✌🏻️
tj i'm not trying to be a jerk or a dickehead but i paused the video at 4:18 and that downpipe part you could just built your own.
Tj the only man to split up one exhaust into a couple videos
You have a higher flow of air leaving the engine without thinking about the flow of air and burn in the engine. My advice is a hi flow intake a new fuel rail with higher rating injectors also tuning is key.
TJ that factory manifold is killing tons of noise, get a tubular manifold to the turbos, that’ll make it tons louder. Also twin turbos are much quieter than one.
You need to replace your spark plus and gap them down to .26, that will 110% fix your ignition break up. I’ve own 5 mkiv Supra’s, very common problem.
Because your turbos are still sequential, second turbo is restricting all your flow (noise)
When I went true twin turbo, noise significantly improved. A single will make your car unbearably loud now lol
Over boosting because having the catless downpipe you need a tune with it I went through the same problem. Eventually you want to get a new ecu the stock ecu isn’t that smart lol.check you coils and spark plugs. Once you get it tuned it will solve the over boosting problem
lol i love the scrape on the front pipe from already bangin frame
I had that problem on my R33 skyline where if I hit a certain RPM it sounds like it's hitting limiter and stuttering, a simple coil pack upgrade and spark plug change made it like new if not better.
It's my birthday today. Greetings from Malaysia. I'm glad to wake up every morning to watch your video dude!
TJ, it’s got a muffler, you would be surprised how much that will muffle even an after market muffle. Straight pipe that and tune it and it’ll sound amazing and spit mad flames
Love the first part of the vid with just u n Calvin. Reminds me of the old days
hey brother i just started youtube is there anyway you can check me out and show the channel some love!? thnxs for your time bro!
That sputtering noise means you need to do a tune up. Change spark plugs and coils. Had the same issue when my sc300 valve cover gasket flooded my spark plugs
TJ please send it with a crazy clean build for the supra... SAVE ALL THE STOCK PARTS !! BUT SEND IT LIKE I KNOW YOU REALLY WANT TO !!!
Definitely check your spark plugs, the coil pack connectors tend to go bad in supras. If you need help I recommend you to watch the recent Lowcals video where they explained how to do it
Hey tj I own a 1990 Supra with a 1jz and my problem was with the spark so check coil packs and spark plugs, mine ended up being the coil packs.
Spark plugs! I had that problem with my Mercedes E300 😊 came back, and is was the plugs again
I stopped everything I did and ran to my phone to watch Tj's video!
The best time of the day
If the break up happened after the straight pipe then yeah it’s probably leaning out under boost..lack of back pressure i assume but I’m sure u will get a AFR gauge so if that’s the case then u know what to do from there
Teeg I think the over boost is correct however I think ignition cut would be more accurate fuel cut would leave an even leaner condition causing fuel knock or ping. Not familiar with Toyota especially Supra (nice).needs the dyno and butt sniffer in pipe.
That stock jdm supra steering wheel is veryyyyyy niiiiiiiice
sounds like it need a fuel pump and a fuel cut defender, add a tune to that and youll have your supra sound :)
6:30 for anyone who is like me and can't wait to hear supra revs
TJ’s Chach ass finally working on his own car, never thought the day would come😱🤯
I feel bad for Mickey . His face when you ask stupid questions is hilarious
deep growl sounds good but i like too much louder.Maybe you can change all exaust system(going to some exxpensive)or you can change really high quality air intake system , wastegate , blow off valve ,aftermarket high quality spark plugs, injection system (bigger than stock one)etc. LOVES FROM TURKEY
Full 3.5in piping full straight pipe no muffler just straight out the back polish the piping so it looks nice itll sounds amazing
'Supra gets big single turbo, anti lag shots fired' video coming soon ;) man I envy the shieet of you boi ! Enjoy it dude x
