- Join McMichael Executive Director and North Star curator Ian Dejardin as he delves into the history and technique of Tom Thomson’s astonishing oil sketches, untangling fact from fiction. Gain a better understanding of the man that changed the landscape of Canadian art-minus the mythologizing.
Ian Dejardin’s lectures always bring paintings I love even more alive.
We had finally planned to go tomorrow.. our first and last chance.. and now we are having this Winter storm! I’m devastated. Thanks for taping this video.
Always been an admirer of the Group. Have painted reproductions of Thomson and other G of 7 painters. Enjoying the lecture very much. Cheers.
Wonderful: love how the connections are made.
Thank you for recording and uploading this talk. I attended this exhibition twice and was overwhelmed by it.
Gratefully,

Talk me to sleep, Ian. Great speech. Great accent.
I started watching this with an open uncritical mind but this guy is nuts, especially his opening. Thomson is standing on a wet rock fly-fishing which I've done a hundred times. If he's concentrating on anything it's keeping his balance. "Born with a gun & fishing rod in his hand". What country boy in that period wasn't? I was & I was born almost a century later. My mother's family are all from that part of Ontario. They owned property around Algonquin Park & knew Thomson quite well. He wasn't a saint or a living god, as portrayed by this joker. OMG. Tom was simply a young, gay man who loved to paint. My grandparent's knew it; everybody knew it. It just wasn't a topic for discussion around the dinner table. It was a different time, but this guy's approach is way over board with his approach.
Curator of the McMichael Not born in Canada... how inappropriate!
