  • Ryen & I are back to talk about our May budget recaps! Not only do we show where our dollars went, but we also discuss our failures and what financial goals we were able to accomplish.
    What do you do with your budget after the month is over, and you’re ready to begin a new month? Most people don’t realize it, but your spending throughout the month gives you some incredibly helpful information.
    One of the first steps to creating and sticking to a realistic budget is tracking your expenses. Your spending is the underlying foundation for creating a budget and ensuring that your budgets in the future are successful.
    If you are not aware of where your money is going, you can’t make the best decisions for your dollars. Today, I am going to show you how to extract all of the vital information from your expense trackers using three helpful worksheets.

    I'm extra spend-y with my cards. I prefer cash. I don't like giving it to anyone. It was great to hear that others take their cash and deposit it to cover online purchases. I do that, too. I never thought about comparing my months against each other. That's something that I need to do. Great video! It was awesome seeing the two budget recaps together.

    Hey Miko, for the new edition in October, I would recommend considering moving the Monthly Spending Comparison up in the book to immediately after the Monthly Budget Category Breakdown. That way we can review our spending compared to our budget and then compare to last month’s spending. Then move on to debt and savings breakdown.

    I find it awesome that your retirement age is 59-60 years old. In Australia ours is 65-67 years old. We can access superannuation at that time. Some can access it at 60. But retirement is 65. At the moment but by the time I retire it may be 67-70 years.

      Shantell Kuik Me too! I use Miko's cashless "envelope" cards to track my variable spending in each category. Works like a dream, and I’m much more disciplined using my card with the cashless envelopes. I also don’t like carrying around a lot of cash, and even more importantly, my spending cash is in an interest-bearing checking account so it can be earning money for me.

    • @melissabingham3472
      @melissabingham3472 4 роки тому +1

      Same here! I use the envelopes for some sinking funds in cash(Christmas, trips, fall festivities, pets) but I don't have them out unless I am putting cash in or taking it out for the purpose. I keep them locked away or I'll use them. I spent so much when I had cash because I had that "well, it's not for bills- it's extra money" mindset and I still do that for some reason.

    How do you track/budget for annual bills like Amazon Prime, Costco memberships, etc? Would they be written in your bills section, variable spending section, kept as a sinking fund, or just covered by your cushion? Love y'all

    I love these videos, I started in January and I still learn something from each video. I have a question. I roll over envelopes pretty often because my Husband is self employed and since his income varies, sometimes I have to make up for it. It’s hard to budget when it changes each month so I try to keep extra in each envelope in case. So when including the starting balance on the trackers, should I include the sinking fund totals too even if I don’t plan on using any? I normally do and for some reason, my tracker is always off from what I actually have in cash in my variable and sinking fund envelopes. I hope this question makes sense 😬

    • @amandavelong83
      @amandavelong83 4 роки тому

      Also, could you make a video about how you used your clothing sinking fund and income from Chris for your Costco run? Curious how you accounted for this in the workbook. Stuff like this stresses me out because I don’t know how to track it.

Since I never 'see' the money, I haven't ever counted it as going to savings. Should I continue to ignore it and not show it on my tracker? Or should I include it?

    • @arthrodea
      @arthrodea 4 роки тому +1

      I think its a brokerage account - so the money is actually in mutual funds, index funds, stocks or bonds (whatever Miko chooses). But not a bank account , because even with a "high yield" savings account, the most you will be earning is about 1.5% - which is horrible growth compared to a mutual funds, index funds, etc. Do you have to put after-tax dollars in to a brokerage account, and you will pay capital gains taxes on any earnings that you take out. But you can take the money out at any time without a tax penalty.

But I'll definetly just keep using the digital copy i already have from the sounds of it. • @arthrodea
      @arthrodea 4 роки тому +1

      It used to be called "Ebates" but they actually changed the name to Rakuten. Its a little app or program for a computer that will give you cash back for shopping through the Rakuten referral link at online stores. The percentages and offers are constantly changing, but for example, it might give you 3% cash back for shopping at Walmart online or 2% back for Amazon purchases in the category of "home and garden". Every 3 months, they send you a "Big Fat Check" with the amount you earned (mine goes to my PayPal). Miko said she puts than money into her Amazon spending account.
      This referral link will give you a $10 bonus just for signing up
      www.rakuten.com/r/HUNEYB98
      Of note - its totally free to sign up and use the app. The service makes its money by advertisers paying the company when it refers a customer to the company's website and they make an online purchase.

    When you track your cash spending on your tracker, do you write down the name of your cash envelope category or do you write down where you spent the money?
    And do you get child support and alimony from your ex-hubby?

  • @brookekahue76
    @brookekahue76 4 роки тому +2

    You take out cash, just to replenish your checking account for what you paid with a debit card? Cash spending with this tedious tracking makes no sense to me. You're obviously keeping an eye on your money by noting it down (very redundantly with this notebook and your cash envelopes, and not very accurately given that you are rounding everything up and expect to be off at the end of the month). It just blows my mind how people say paying in cash is the only way for them to get a handle on their finances because debit/credit card spending causes them to be careless. I'd say if you can dedicate time to tracking your finances with the amount of time and effort this system requires, I think you can give yourself some freedom and look into flexible spending options like paying with a debit/credit card or discounted prepaid gift cards and track as you go. You'll look at your balance in your spending accounts (not your checking account) as your "available cash" and then tell yourself whether you can/should buy it. In the case of credit cards, you can get cash back and defer payment interest free anywhere from 20 days to 50 days with grace periods (you of course have to be careful, but it is a POWERFUL tool when used correctly) The freedom to pay with debit/credit card responsibly will allow for faster, easier to track, and SAFER transactions. Think of all the time you would save not going to the bank every pay period and not worry about getting robbed. My friend was recently robbed after leaving a bank after she withdrew her spending money from her paycheck and she had NO RECOURSE for getting it back; I felt so devastated for her. Clearly there's a huge following with cash spending with Dave Ramsey and this blog has a huge following, but I do want people to open their minds just a little bit about using different methods of payments and not worry about how it will hinder their healthy financial habits. You did get my full view of the video (with ads) so if anything, you got that from me.

      I agree. I have a cheap little dollar store notebook where I write my expenses, variable spending and sinking funds, etc and I do the math as I go when allocating money across all categories. I don’t highlight any calendar and take out a ton of cash for categories. When I grocery shop I use my credit card where I get 5% cash back and I set an amount and I don’t go over it. I leave that set amount of money in my checking account and pay the credit card back of what I spent. Way easier. I do have a cash envelope for my car maintenance fund and shopping but that’s it. I’m not pulling out cash for rent, cable bill, health insurance , etc. that’s too much.
