    As a comedy fan this cracks my shit up and as a minority woman it hurts my heart. They could've played the idiots for their bit without also undermining her political statement. They were the only people in her corner and they silenced her just to make everyone else more comfortable.

      as a fan of both Taika and Jemaine, I did wonder about that a bit myself - they're both part Maori and why I didn't understand jack shit (apart from the odd word - currently learning Maori) that didn't sit suuuuper well with me either. felt a little odd to me to come on with random "translation jokes" there

    So glad Taika got to show the US his awards speech magic... he deserves all the recognition he's getting. If the quirky NZers took over the US the world would be a lot better off....and yes, I'm an American.

    the more annoying thing is that she's talking for over half the time when the movie was clearly Jemaine and Taika's baby

    • @worldoftaika
      @worldoftaika  6 років тому +89

      the more annoying thing is your assumption that she had less contribution in the movie than the guys. we don't know how much and in what percentage the movie is her baby as well. besides, she's talking sense and the guys after being gentlemen and letting the woman talk, they take over and make fun. Taika is rubbish in making serious public speeches. But that's why we love him, don't we? :)

    • @vanishing_girl
      @vanishing_girl 6 років тому +5

      you can obviously tell, they wrote and directed it, there are many interviews where Taika and Jemaine discuss the process behind the creation of the film and I have never heard her mentioned once

    • @worldoftaika
      @worldoftaika  6 років тому +41

      I don't deny Shadows is their idea, but she's a co-producer so she has as much right to take the stage as them.

      in Canada there are 2 official languages English and French. Almost 100 percent of Canadians understand English and only 20 percent understand French. So if you speak both why would you speak language that less people understand? It is so stupid. Like speaking some secret language that only your friends understand.

    • @worldoftaika
      @worldoftaika  6 років тому +57

      Maybe simply to make the statement that she's Maori and she's going to speak her language. It's not stupid. In Canada, English and French are languages of European colonists. Maori are indigenous people in NZ and they want to put their mark everywhere, even if it is just by speaking Maori at public events.

  • @Star-du2pv
    @Star-du2pv 8 років тому +23

    Why is she speaking Maori when she obviously knows English and this doesn't appear to be a Maori specific event? It would be like Sandra Bullock going to an American awards show and accepting her award in German simply because she knows the language.

    • @worldoftaika
      @worldoftaika  8 років тому +130

      +Star Maori is the second official language in New Zealand. Chelsea is Maori and has the right to speak in her native language as she pleases, while Sandra Bullock speaking German at American awards would look weird, because German isn't an official language in the States.
      This event was a New Zealand event, so Maori as well.

      +World Of Taika There is no official language in the United States. Most people speak English. I know Spanish and have the "right" to speak Spanish if I were at an award show in America, but I wouldn't do it because only a handful of people would understand me. This seems no different to me.

    • @worldoftaika
      @worldoftaika  8 років тому +76

      +martinez The event was held in NZ and it was NZ Awards. As you pointed out, it's a different situation than in the US where there is no official language. In NZ there are two and in the country where indigenous Maori people are such a strong force, especially now in the cinema, I liked the fact that Chelsea chose to speak her people's language.
      I wouldn't mind seeing any Native American actors or filmmakers at the Oscars speaking their tribe's language. Oh, I forgot, you can only see them at Sundance or other independent or indigenous festivals and awards ceremonies.
