    I thought I was going to see an epic battle between a thousand ants and a giant crab on a rampage. Instead I literally watched some poor unsuspecting crab on a pilgrimage get subjected to chemical warfare and then blindly wander around as it slowly dies...

      Ant don’t need a swarm tactic to kill these crabs. 1000 ants can easily kill 1000 crab, not only that, ants can even kill large number of crabs with a number disadvantage, 1000 crabs is not likely to survive even 100 ants. There is no way for crab to defend, no coordination, not even sense danger until too late. The ants can kill them one after another, dead crab will also attract other crabs for free food, which they soon will join the pile. The road kill explodes their casualty when more crabs stay on road for free crab, and the next vehicle create even more dead crabs ready to eat.

    Well, this is kinda depressing.
    I mean, if the crabs were being hunted by native predators, then it's fine--circle of life, I guess--but these ants were brought into the island artificially and now they're messing up the island's balance afaik.
    I feel bad for the crabs--they can't rave anymore.
    Still circle of life, I suppose. Still depressing, though.
    Still love BBC Earth and their great cinematography, of course!

    Videos like this makes me wonder; is it reasonable to take out endangered species from their natural habitat to be made as pest control, effectively solving both problems simultaneously?
    For example, the ants here are killing native wildlife at an alarming rate because they have no predator to control their numbers. So how about we capture some pangolins, which is endangered in their own natural habitats because of things like deforestation and poaching, and introduced them here so that they could control the ant population? Since they only eat ants, they do not pose a threat to any native wildlife. And in return, they get to settle down and repopulate in a much safer habitat.

    • @firedoom666
      @firedoom666 3 роки тому +29

      The problem with that is the new species might cause issues for other species. I don't know the specifics of this island, but if they have their own natural ants the imported pangolin could be a destructive force against them. An ecosystem is tough to balance

      @@firedoom666 I'd say thats NORMALLY true (the predator ends up killing the native wildlife instead), however in this case... I'd say pangolins may be perfect. They are already endangered. This idea just feels different. I think they should give it a go.
