I read Uzumaki in a tent while camping, finished it at night during a pretty intense storm. I'll forever be chasing that feeling while reading horror.
I read it for the first time during chemotherapy. It helped get me through it
Nice profile pic
If you happen to live alone in an apartment or in a more urban setting, I recommend Mieruko-chan.
I love uzumaki with all my heart if u couldn’t tell
The day after I finished Uzumaki there was a tornado in my town. The true horror experience.
Uzumaki was my introduction to Junji Ito and utterly blew me away
Same buddy, I finished it in one go, just couldn't stop once I began lol!
Uzumaki is definitely great. Also i strongly recommend Tomie. That's absolutely one of Junji Ito's best one.
@@quangnhatho8331Thanks, will definitely check it out!
Never heard of Junji Ito, bit I just grabbed Uzumaki online on a whim. Will read it soon.
Same
no longer human is a pure masterpiece, I'd say if anything it is the scariest of the Ito works because it shows the horrors of anxiety and social isolation. Showing that the true horror is within our own lives.
Tho It is a novel adaptation but I 100 percent agree it was terrifying
@@bunchagrapes I agree, it really allows Ito to flex his artistic interpretation.
@@simcard867 I feel like the story was more realistic than u believe but I see how the story makes you want to sympathize with the main character
After I finished it I sat there and put the book down and sighed and just said wtf and felt numb like I really liked it but fuck was it depressing
@@simcard867 Honestly I don't think the story's very sympathetic to Yozo at all - keep in mind that most of the 'sympathetic' moments come from Oba himself, who in this story is an unreliable narrator. Sure, Yozo comes off as a sympathetic character but that's only if you take his word over the horrible things we see him do in the story.
In fact, I think one strong point of Ito's adaptation is that he makes Yozo *less* sympathetic by adding in more deaths for which he is responsible for, as well as allowing the reader to see his actions and how they conflict with his own narration. It really helps to bring Oba's complexity to the forefront of the story
I literally went on youtube to search junji ito, only to find out that it was at the top of my recommended. Swear to God you read my mind
@Jesus Gideon that looks like it can be worth my time

Deserter is out now too! As well as his collector’s edition of Yon & Mu, and Liminal Zone coming out in July!! 🤩
Can you plz add the newly released too 😊
One thing I noticed about Ito's page layout is it's well placed. I don't know if it's Ito himself but it seems he sets up a feeling of suspense and you turn the page and the shocking image is one the opposite page. It's like you hesitate to turn the page to see it.
super eyepatch wolf made a video on this its a great storytelling technique that ito truly mastered
I noticed that too! You just know you’re going to see some disturbing stuff
Just so you know, that is Ito's planning and that feeling is 100% intentional
i've heard that referred to as the "page turn effect" before, and its actually why the movie adaptations of itos work hasn't done well, it can't produce the same feeling you get from the suspense of turning the page.
@@happyhealer2684 also the reason why reading his work digitally feel less good too.

Updated to include stories from Lovesickness and Deserter
There's just something about hard covers and Junji Ito that go so well together. It's like premium meets master. Chefs kiss. 🖤
Lovesickness is good!!
you can already preorder junji itos next books: Lovesickness, Sensor, Deserter. all releasing until the end of 2021. So i think we got 4 Junji ito books this year! (im counting Remina too because in my region it arrived in January instead of the american release, which was before in December)
Very great
They can't stop printing his stuff in English until it's all out! I think this should be enshined in law somehow. Then somehow we need to invest all our technological progress in keeping Junji as healthy as possible for as long as possible so he can write tons more stuff, lol.
I also desperately want to have a full Souichi book.
Lol, best comment 👍🏾🤣🤣
That very book is now available on English!
@@nessiesearcher Thanks, i grabbed a copy on pre-order and am very happy now
i've only read no longer human by him. jesus christ most incredible piece of art i have ever consumed, loved everything about it and left me depressed.
My manga collection consists basically of Monster by Naoki Urasawa, all Junji Ito work available in english and the adaptation of The Strange Tale of Panorama Island by Suehiro Maruo lol
A well curated collection is an A+ collection!
I love how the dust cover when looked through the light makes Venus blurry like she's in the blind spot

Those omnibus hardcovers are so nice, the colored artwork is so nice especially in venus in the blind spot. Such nice artwork
This channel is a gem
Thanks for doing this. I’m trying to get into manga. I’ve read Alita, Berserk, and Omni 1 of Gantz.
these are all toptier manga, how about: Pluto, Monster, 20th century boys, attack on titan(it has some rough art at the beginning but an amazing story), death note, and ofcourse jojo. (the first part of jojo is kinda lame, you really have to torture yourself through it. The second part of jojo is descent but everything after part 2 is simply amazing and absolutely worth it. You could also just start reading the 7th part called "steel ball run", because it is set in an alternate universe, so you could consider it a reboot, jojo part 7 is absolutely god tier manga just like berserk.)
check out Innocent and its sequel, Innocent Rouge. it's a dark, gorey story set in 18th century France and the art is absolutely immaculate. also pretty short at 99 and 88 chapters respectively
Keep up with berserk and GANTZ and try HELLSING
Try Vagabond and Blame!
You should try Vinland saga
I went out today and got Uzumaki from Barns&Noble I can't wait to read this horror manga by Junji Ito.
I didn't even know there was that much physical books from him lol.
Can we talk about how great your intro is 😭✋
I really hope viz media brings more of souichi’s stories the ones in smashed were very good
I know that someone has compiled many fan translations of the stories without official translations on imgur including the red string, the thing that drifted ashore, ice cream bus, the smoking club, gift bearer and most of not all of the souichi stories. Unfortunately I lost the URL.
I was inspired here and picked up Gyo, Tomie and Uzumaki. Thanks.
All worth it.
I also recommend 'no longer human' it's about Osamu Dazai (Author of the original novel) experiencing some very hard moments in his life. He shares his experiences dealing with self-isolation, anxiety, depression and more. it's absolutely NOT for children as it contains some very graphic moments. The adaptation by Ito will leave you terrified after you read it. it's a very good horror manga and definitely worth checking out.
Uzumaki takes the cake when it comes to overall story-telling, and imagery. He absolutely out-did himself on that one, and it will forever be my favorite Junji Ito/horror manga also mainly since it was my introduction to being a manga reader in general. Always loved anime, but took me until only about a year ago to start reading manga.
Same here. I bought Uzumaki after i finished my last exam of the fourth semester while waiting on my train home.
Began to read it during the ride and became hooked. Soon after that i bought Gyo and Shiver. Then i got myself Berserk, Blame!, Monster, Dragonball, Lone Wolf and Cub and Fist of the North Star. I love manga much more than anime now.
I was gonna call out that you left out the other stories included in Gyo but you mentioned them 👍🏻
I read Uzumaki back in middle school at the public library. Saw it on the shelf and was super curious. Ever since then it's been in my mind. I could forget about the book completely but then out of nowhere a few years later my brain is like "remember that horror book about spirals?" And I'm like "Uzumaki! I should read that again!"
I've been wanting to start reading Ito's work but while browsing I always felt kinda lost about where to begin. Thanks!
Is it bad that “no longer human” is my favorite junji ito story lol
I agree it’s a great adaptation. I wouldn’t call it a Junji Ito story tho
Definitely read the original novel if you liked junji Ito's take, the novel is free on the public domain
@@bzrkr444 I bet I would like the original novel more because my least favorite parts of the manga were the injected horror elements that felt out of place with the rest of the story.
Nah it's mines too haha! Altho I do love every story I've read from him, but Uzumaki & No Longer Human are top tier imo.
@@MICOXD no it has originality and it's not a complete recreation of Dazai's work. just admire it, Junji ito did a good job
Wow, there's a lot that haven't been published yet - nice! Fantastic video once again, very informative and enjoyable. I have only bought Uzumaki, Tomie and Shiver thus far but I'm planning on picking all of them up over some years.
Regarding Single Volume Manga Stories. Junji Ito is just perfect for practically all his works! Even his longer forms like Tomie doesn't even reach 5 Volumes & already has an all in one still lightweight Omnibus.
He is indeed a Gem concerning Comics Collectors that focus on shorter Volume Series or Standalone Complete One Volume Stories like me haha. Relaxing Vid to enjoy as always buddy.
7:30
Normal person: "Oh, how quaint, a closed wash bin."
Me: * internal panicked screaming *
Lol, I literally just bought Remina and Venus the other day.
Absolutely loved Remina!
The cover to 'shiver' messed up the graphic design from the original cover sadly. The little puppeteered ballerina gets covered up by the viz logo.
I honestly don't see anything even remotely comedic about gyo. It' horrifying and utterly disgusting. Fish can look silly, but that doesn't bring any comedy to the utter ugliness or rot being able to move and spread. For me the idea of bacteria infection and some old tech mixing into something forever changing face of all life is horror at its bleakest.
As an Ito fan who's read most of his work (including the untranslated short stories), I'll give some advice. If you're new to Ito, without exception, Uzumaki should be your way-in. It's by far, the most well-known of his stories, and it's pretty good.
If you're a bit more experienced with Ito, however, going so far as to read Gyo, and the entire Junji Ito collection fan translated; I highly recommend you check out "Black Paradox," which is one of Ito's medium-length stories, which lasts for a few chapters.
EDIT: In the Deserter Volume, which will be released this Winter, I believe we will be getting most of the stories from the "Junji Ito Collection: The Bully," which coincidentally features "The Deserter," as well as some of Ito's earliest works. My guess as to the stories in this volume: (For anyone familiar with the Mueseum of Terror Vol 3 Release of Ito, which is currently $1,000s of dollars anywhere online, it will be featuring most the stories in that collection. This is my guess:
-The Deserter (Confirmed)
-The Bully (High-likelihood)
-Heart of a Father (High-likelihood; also my favorite Ito story of all time)
-The Will (Based on the line "A pair of girls look alike, but they aren't twins" ; good guess)
-Sword of the Reanimator (Good guess)
So that's potentially 5/12 of the stories in this Volume
Now, let me talk about key differences and stories that belong to The Bully anthology, that won't be included:
-Love as Scripted (Already in SHIVER's release)
And that's pretty much it
Despite having read practically all of his anthologies, this is what is giving me trouble: "A boy's nightmare threatens to spill out into the real world." If anyone has some idea to which story this is referring to, comment it.
I dont really agree with his take on gyo. That was jus so creepy not rlly funny, he kept calling it silly lmao but it gave me nightmares
Awesome guide to Ito! Also Viz published an Ito artbook last year that is amazing. I highly recommend it because his artwork is so amazing :)
Started off with his cat diary and now I own 5 so far. Right now I am reading Remina. Can't wait to finish them all!!
I’m a huuuuge fan of all his work and this video was VERY handful. Immediately purchased like 4 of these books online. Thank you so much!
I’m hoping we get Black Paradox. Read it online a while back and it’s one of my favs of his I’d love in my collection. Great video man 👍
im pretty sure we're getting it this fall! i cant wait
Flesh Colored Horror is 500 bucks on ebay... crap
Uzumaki #1
Hellstar "Remina" #2
Idk what ur talking about that story was a lovecraftian terrifying horror.
The second-hand record has already been released in Shiver. I believe they changed the title to Used Record. Great Video btw.
Very informative video. It's also maybe worth mentioning that Viz put out a junji Ito artbook called twisted visions
Personally I don't think Junji Ito's work is that scary. For some reason when it comes to manga, I need something a lot more screwed up like Pumpkin Night or Dokumushi to be able to actually make me feel a certain way. Im not hating on him at all I actually enjoy his works a lot like Uzumaki and Frankenstein being my favorites from him.
You say uh a lot
I love Junji Ito but am behind on his releases. Need to get Frankenstein, No Longer Human, Venus and Remina. Plus there's more coming! Gotta catch up.
I read Uzumaki as I was 14, and then I was terrified of horrors, so I had awful nightmare afterwards. Now it's the feeling I crave for while reading/watching horrors
in the first 45 seconds of this I got excited cause I saw the Yowamushi Pedal volumes on the shelf behind him
I read it today and now I need more
Yes, this is exactly the guide I need, heard good things about Junji Ito's work and I'm not sure where to start.
I started at Uzumaki this year, no regrets
You reading the Question in the opening=instant subscribe. You clearly have excellent taste.
Just to mention: there is a line of 5 Junji Ito Funko Pops coming out this month. I’m not really into Funko Pops, but the Tomie figure is kind of irresistible.
I'm not into funko pops either but i it's a junji ito one then I might buy it
Be careful, once she seduced you you dont have much time left
Eh, if Japan has made any, save your money and buy those instead, they're actually good quality.
Ikr, I’m not into collectible figurines or Funko Pops but ngl, some of the Junji Ito Funko Pops look pretty interesting.
@@lainiwakura1776 How different could they really be imported from Japan
I already finished Tomie, Gyo, Uzumaki, and one of his Kyoufu Collections. And Im still looking for more
I think "Crap to Remember" became "Memories of Real Poop" (LOL!) in LOVESICKNESS.
These are so great!
Iv never read any of Junji Ito stories before but Iv known about his work for a long time and after this video, I think I’m about to go buy some of them now lol
First discovered junji ito in 2020,went into a comic shop with a friend who brought a junji artwork book while we were there. She showed me some of the art from the book and I fell in love. Went online and ordered uzumaki when I got home(the comic shop didn't have any junji books other than the art book) read it and I was hooked, now have all the books printed so far baring cat diary. Waiting for liminal zone to be released now.
I love Junji Ito, I have every one of the Viz editions of his works and one art book. I knew about Lovesickness but I had no idea that there were two more scheduled after and I am so excited, thank you for pointing these out! I hope that Viz keeps up with the Ito collections and is able to release most if not all in English, I would buy every single one to complete my collection.
Can anyone tell me junji Ito order list manga of his work? I just know Tomie is the First manga..
theres no order, its just different story every book, you should try uzumaki first
creative designs, not a great writter
You can't look at someone's manga collection online without seeing a copy of Uzumaki and/or Gyo there somewhere.
I discovered Junji Ito manga's about 2 months ago and I first purchased Fragments of Horror. After seeing that Horror Manga's exists (not just manga's like naruto, dragonball, jujutsu kaisen, parasyte etc...) I fell in love and bought all the collections and stand-alone available till now! Can't wait to get the last 3 appearing this year. This is my first time venturing into reading Manga. Usually I would just watch anime's. But I am glad I did. Now I want to have a huge shelf with all the manga's from all my favourite anime as well. MY FAV JUNJI ITO must be Dissolving Clasroom! (Uzumaki not counting it cuz it's a masterpiece of its own)
Gyo was supposed to be comedic?! It haunts me a year later! XD
more than comedic, Gyo was kind of disgusting to me. but it was really good nontheless!
17:45 this isnt a kind of nag or anything i just wanted you to know that the protagonist doesnt necessarily mean a positive character rather the main character of an story. In fact a protagonist can be much more evil or morally grey than the antagonist for example light yagami from death note. Love your vids. Keep them coming👊
I realized when I was editing that I didn’t really say what I meant at that point but let it stay.
The MC of that title acts in both roles as the protagonist and antagonist, which is more why I was struggling with wanting to just say “protagonist.”
Due to his actions throughout the story he winds up creating the obstacles and issues in his life himself, and I think that is part of the point of the narrative is that he is his own worst enemy, but until the words escaped my mouth I never thought about how to articulate that in few words without spending more than a sentence having to explain myself.
I think the main character falls into the category of “failed protagonist” more than anything else because he does not really have any kind of positive development in his arc. It’s something to ponder further.
This is my first video from you and guess what? I'm now binging on all the rest 🥰 so glad I stumbled upon this vid. I'm an Ito fan myself and this is really helpful
I currently have Uzumaki, Tomie, Gyo, No Longer Human and newest to my collection, Remina. Thanks for this guide since I'm going to collect every one of his works eventually.
Edit: a week later and now I have added Smashed, Shiver and Loveless to the collection!
Junji Ito is my current mangaka crush at the moment 😊😊😊
Uzumaki is a masterpiece. Followed closely by no longer human. But I do love the vast majority of his work.that I’ve seen anyway
I have a bunch of original ComicsONE published Junji Ito like Flesh colored horror or Tomie volumes starting from 2000/2001. Japanese horror comics are pretty damn good. Check out Kazuo Umezu, Hideshi Hino, or Toru Yamazaki
I'm reading tomie right now I've been reading for about a day and I'm already almost half way through I just ordered Uzumaki, Gyo and Yun and Mu.

Reading Junji Ito makes me feel like there are bugs underneath my skin. Scratch scratch scratch.
I am only missing 4; lovesickness, no longer human, cat diary, and dissolving classroom. I also bought his Twisted art book. I highly recommend this one.
