  • Is artificial intelligence capable of being creative? One of great debates about artificial evidence at present is whether or not it’s capable of being ‘creative’. Creativity is seen as one of the most important of all human capabilities. It’s the engine of progress, the cradle of culture and the foundation stone for civilization itself. For AI to be able to mirror what humans can do in this area would, it’s argued, mark a very real step towards machines attaining genuine human-like intelligence.

The arguement that AI democratises creativity implies that hitherto there were actual barriers to prevent people being creative- which is nonsense. What AI actually does is homogenize the way that creativity is expressed, funnelling those expressions through algorithms that strip those expressions of their uniqueness and idiosyncrasies which will in the end lead to a culture of derivative mediocrity.
The fact is that AI generators are not themselves neutral passive tools of expression but complex black box technologies that impose all manner of patterns and regularities of their own on the outputs they create- the end game being not an enhancement of diverse creative expressions but a convergence toward the average and mediocre.
