  • In this clip from the ‪@winston_marshall‬ Show we’re diving deep into the fundamental differences between left-wing and right-wing populism. While left-wing populists focus on class, right-wing populists prioritise culture. We'll explore how national populists tap into the public's concern for their national culture and identity, and why the left has struggled to understand and address these cultural issues. I also discuss key thinkers and books that challenge the elite consensus, and the rise of new media ecosystems that are reshaping the marketplace of ideas. Stay tuned to learn more about this cultural battle and its implications for our society.

Populism must be grounded in nationalism by definition. Any system that puts outsiders above natives is anti-populist. (and by gifting foreigners all the same rights and status as natives we are doing just that, as they do not start from zero, so once we include what advantages they bring with them, they are placed above us)

@richardstevens8839 It depends on the type of nationalism. Left-wing nationalism is fine, while right-wing nationalism is bad.

Your point about the BBC homepage being a liberal progressive template is so true, and something I have pointed out to friends before. It's all there in black and white before our very eyes every day, what we are up against. They even have everything they really want us to focus on listed from left to right in that red bar at the top now, under the news header. Great video/interview, appreciate your work.

British fair play has to stop at the taking over and conquering of the ancient ancestral homelands of the Indigenous British peoples. At the erasure of the Indigenous British peoples.
Once all Indigenous British peoples understand what is happening, and how to change it, the current state of the British Isles will move towards the bright future for it's Sons and Daughters rapidly.
    It starts in the mind.
    Well done Matthew.

I have no idea how Labour are supposed to be getting their votes... If you are unhappy with Conservatives then surely you would vote for Reform. Being unhappy with Conservatives and voting Labour would be like being unhappy with the wind and voting for a hurricane.

I am a left of centre liberal. I follow your opinions and those of John Gray. My approach is to try and understand your point of view not on my terms, but if I were you, on your terms. I have always done this, I want to know why good decent people end up with such radically different opinions to my own, notably my elderly relatives who live in Norfolk and support Brexit.
I agree with you on one thing in particular. There is a huge gulf in understanding between the graduates and non-graduates. Graduates are meant to be intelligent but those on the left are often remarkably unintelligent in the disdain they have towards everyone else.
One thing that bothers me about the right is that their backlash against wokery is sometimes worse than the wokery they are protesting against. In the USA many on the right, notably Donald Trump, are now friends with Kim Jung-Un, which is crazy.

    A different perspective.
What if traditional conservatives want functioning efficient systems to generate value, a populist vote winner. Vs left wing chaos and entropy with a value extraction.
This could apply to healthcare, quangos, intersectional funding, public services.
I think we tried the middle compromise way with no one happy, we’re about to find out the leftist way (right wing accelerationists may support), and then perhaps we should go the right way.
I’ve delayed my emigration until 2029/30. This could line up well for a good 2030+.

A view from the UK. Matt, i have been saying this for years. Nobody on the streets today really knows what populism is. Like all the other 'words' thrown about in political discourse. You're a.....'Far Left', 'Far Right', a Commie, a Fascist, a populist. It is all now used pejoratively. From discussions i have nobody really knows what the political parties stand for. The days parties had their own ideology, Labour were socialists, for the working man, unions to protect them from being exploited etc., - that's how they started. The Tories were middle class managers, business owners, wealth creators, golf club members etc. Tony Blair came along and turned the Labour party into another Conservative party with a small 'c', dropping 'clause 4' springs to mind. The hackneyed phrase, "Elections are won on the centre ground" was his mantra because he knew socialism had run its course so re-invented it as new Labour. (Yup, little Tories). We need more debate as to who they really are and what the party REALLY stands for. Greens, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Reform, we know what they stand for. The two major parties, no, we don't. You hear expressions like, Tory wets, The Conservative left, the right wing of the Labour party. I think it is deliberate to confuse the voter deliberately. And no, could you remind them that they do not have a divine right to govern.

I used to really like Rory and Alistair's stuff. Rory comes across well travelled and knowledgeable but Alistair wound me up no end, which was good to challenge myself.
Lately I've found their narrative so obtuse I've stopped watching. I don't know whether that's me drifting further right or them getting more ridiculous.
I've noticed it's getting harder and harder to find a middle ground any more.
