Chris Evert won a grand slam title for 13 years in a row from 1974 to 1986, and was ranked top 3 in the world for 17 years in a row!

Please go to the library and learn a little about tennis before you make such a dumb comment. She was ranked #1 in the world for 7 years but she stunk? Doesn't make any sense. The racket and string technology was different at the time, and you can't hit the ball as hard with control as you can now. She was a product of her era. Now if she were to grow up in today's era, she would have the benefit of racket/string technology, fitness, technique to compete in today's game. She was 2-1 against Seles and I'm positive Seles would destroy any player today.

Chris was greater than an 18 slam champion… in her time the slams weren’t the ultimate testament of a player’s greatness like it became today…she didn’t focus on them and missed many due to professional scheduling conflicts…
Good point ! For example, she only played 6 Australian Opens in her entire career ….and made the finals SIX times !
That was true of the Australian Open and French Open, although I think Wimbledon and the US Open were always considered exceptionally important. Evert played team tennis in 1976, 77, 78 and missed the French. Given her record on clay she would have won at least two of those, probably all of them, as she won in 74 and 75 and then again in 79 and 80. Her main opposition in the Australian would have been Evonne Goolagong-Cawley. Had she played 75, 76, the 2 Opens in 77, 79 and 80, 'd have been surprised if she didn't win at least two of those.
Love an Evert Victory !! She would have had more slams had she played the French and The Aussie in those years 😊🎾

It won't happen anymore because the courts are slower.
Not sure I'd describe Shriver as a player with great technique lol She had very basic technique and moved like a buffalo on ice!
@@mistertibbs2280sabatini walked like John Wayne or someone with 50 lb balls. Shriver walked like a duck and she could win 99 percent of all points if I played a match against her and even at my best ( I was a 4.0-4.5 player - I played in both leagues winning almost 95 percent of my 4.0 matches and 33 percent of my 4.5 matches ) due to shrivers experience. The mental aspect is all of tennis.
You're forgetting the brilliant play of Hana Mandlikova who would trouble Martina and Chris, in their peaks!
Sukova is the best player to never win a slam singles title IMO. 4 times into the finals losing against Evert, Navratilova, and Graf. She did win 14 grand slam doubles and mixed titles and was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
It's obvious why. She wasn't quick enough for single.
@@tomsd8656I don’t think her movement is subject I think her court sense under pressure was suspect. The slam champions that won more than one grand slam ( Conchita hit a purple patch against a 38 year old late in third set in 94 W was a once in a lifetime event- Sukova was the superior player when compared to Martinez- both having slow wind - ups and full follow through making timing an issue) had superior court sense and shot selection .
I think Jankovic is up there too.,, she was number one but no slam.
The first point encapsulates this match. Sukova fights hard but after a hard fought long point sometimes Kona hits just long after Evert hits 3 sharply hit backhands..
Love this match-up. Like Hana, Helena had some serious weapons when she was "on" - I respect her game too much!
Helena Sukova is the best player to have never won a glam slam tiltle in my opiniion.

Chris Evert's passed better than any player in tennis history. Tremendous calm always under the pressure of the serve and volley. She never looks rushed and could place the ball in any area of the court. Lovely to watch her picking Sukova apart as she approaches time and time again.
Agree with you. Seles was also a laser-like passer but Evert was the best ever. She seemed to be able to create impossible angles from anywhere in the court, always cool under pressure. I think her baseline game was developed to counter the serve volley tactics of King, Court and other greats of the 60s and early 70s. She would wrap them up in her sticky web of deep groundstrokes, then if they came in, whoosh, passed on either wing. They were confused, frustrated and thoroughly beaten. It took Martina's amazing athleticism and net play to break through her defences.
@@tobiasisback4605 It's all subjective, but I think Seles was better. Apart from her longer reach, her greater use of topspin allowed her create angles that Chris couldn't get with her flatter strokes.
@@zeddeka You may be right. Seles had amazing angled passing shots, certainly, which I think is mainly why she did better against Navratilova than Graf did. But Evert was just so… inevitable in her passes and you never knew whether she'd go down the line, cross court or strand you with a lob. Hard to say who was better.
This is the second slam win - longest stretch evert wins a slam . Her last win was 83 French) she wins this and French of 85 then wins first set against Martina in W final.Losing 4 slam finals in between these two wins - 83 French and 84 AO.
This tournament marking the end of Martina Navratilova's hyper dominant period, and her record breaking unbeaten streak. In 1985-86 there were 7 grand slams held (no Australian Open in 1986) and Martina was beaten in three of them.
Of the 18 slam titles that Chris won , Chris lost the first set - 75 French, 75 Open, 80 Open 86 French 84 AO. - 5 times. - almost a third of her slam titles.

Classic Evert match - she lost a lot of first sets in her career, but her opponents usually couldn't keep the necessary standard up and Chris would sail through in three sets.

Martina and a later stage Graf are only ones that were able to win the second set against Evert.

Sukova is beautiful as Tennis Player.
Slightly slender and tall , long limbs , and , her playstyle (most netdash / weak forehand / onehand slice back) matches such appearance.
What I like most about her is her soft swing.
Today's players are only hard hit , so ,Like Sukova at this video, can't watch it for long.
Two different matches - up to second Sukova spill on grass and after. ( second spill in first game of second set. ).

I liked Chris Evert a lot. Elegant from the outside, working like a machine. Impressive.
Also no groaning in here. That’s the main reason why I hardly watch tennis today, no women’s tennis at all, and men’s - sorry Nadal, great player, but I skip his matches as well.
A fascinating height related statistic entirely relevant here. Evert has an amazing record against tall players. These are all the losses to tall women( defined as 5'9" or taller) who played Chris and the number of wins they got during her slam winning window June 1974 RG - June 1986 RG. Most of them were top ten players.
Court - 5'9'' 0 wins. they were all before.
Helga Mastoff 6'0" 0 wins ever
Stove - 5'11'' 0 wins ever. There was one default to a groin pull I won't count.
Shriver - 6' 0" 0 wins. They were in 1987-88.
Sukova - 6'2" 0 wins, technically. her first win was at the Open in sept of '86 not June.
Kohde Kilch - 6'2 0 wins ever.
Lisa Bonder 5'10" 1 win
Leslie Allen 5'10 0 wins ever
Graf - 5'9" 1 win prior to RG in '86
Sabatini 5'9" 0 wins. First win was in 1987.
Karen Krantzcke 6' 1" 0 wins ever
Out of all these players, there was only two Evert losses recorded combined within the prime parameters- Graf at Hilton Head in 1986 and Bonder in Tokyo in 1983 and both were baseliners. Sukova's height was actually a big problem here, not an asset.
Court was past her prime after 1973, and Graf/Sabatini had not yet entered their prime in 1986. The rest of the other players never won a grand slam title. Sukova and Shriver were perennial top 10 players but they were slow. Evert just had to move them around from the back court and they are in trouble. When they come in to the net, Evert can use her accurate groundstrokes to pass or lob them. Their best chance against Evert is on grass, like here, keep the points short and come in to finish the point as fast as you can. Tall slow players were a bad match up against Evert.
@@TheGatornation93 That was exactly my point. Tall players have offer huge advantages at net because their reach and height make them more difficult to pass and lob on any surface. Sukova, Shriver, Court and Kohde Kilch all had victories over Martina earlier .these lumbering giants could not have been too slow. They still had to run down approach shots and volleys, change direction on that baseline and hit passing shots by them to break serve.
A match against Leslie Allen in Oakland (Chris's first event of 1982) was one of several times in Chris's career where she staged a comeback from down 0-4 in the third set.
Interesting point, hadn’t thought of it in terms of height. I always thought Evert looked incredibly balanced. Everything in proportion. Her game was developed as a counter to Court so it would make sense that she ate tall players for breakfast 😊
Chris can’t help herself trying to hot lobs on a windy day against Sukova mostly hitting too low over Sukova head. In that first set. Not breaking Sukova at 4-5 with Helena hitting 3 double faults cost Evert the first set.
If I were Sukova coach I’d have her spend an hour a day doing short split step running drills on court, her recovery movement is weak. Sukova takes too few adjustment steps before contacting the ball. She lumbers around the court taking too big of a step.

How is the grass in such great shape at the end of the tournament?
The center court holds 3 courts. They use the 2 ends ones for the early rounds
@@kloatlantaAustralian open at the time used a different type of grass than at Wimbledon . Weather is dryer and a heartier grass was used to withstand dryer conditions . The ball bounces much higher here which helps Evert. I believe if Evert had played at Wimbledon with the Australian grass type she would’ve stood a better chance of winning at least one of the 5 finals against Martina .

That's why Navratilova beat a top 20 player in singles after retiring, in her mid 40s, in the early 2000s. That's why Navratilova won her last slam in 2006, aged almost 50. Amateur 😂.
When young Chrissie at 15,16 first joined the tour, older players who scouted her saw nothing to worry about. She had a mediocre first serve, and a cotton ball second, barely adequate volley and overhead. She was not at all fast, and as for that two hander of hers, that novelty looked like total vulnerabilty. Even after she had estabished herself as a giant killer on the Florida clay circut, the rest of the tour was played on grass or fast carpet. But behind each of these obvious liabilities, she had fostered an aray of compensatory attributes that more than made up the deficits. She had weak serves, but an astonishing return of serves and passing shots. She did not need great volleys because the depth and consistency of her groundies meant dropshots were low percentage. She wasn't a sprinter, but she got where she needed to go because she could anticipate earlier, had superior footwork and balance, and set up for her stroke so early. That pony tailed girl simply refused to give away anything. She was stubborn, tenacious and fearless. Nobody believed there was danger, until they were face to face with it.

@@tomsd8656 Well, Navratilova was 43-37 against Evert and lost most of her first 25 matches to her. Navratilova has a 9-9 h2h with Graf and is 1-0 against power hitting Davenport. The same Navratilova beat a top 20 player in the 2000s in singles well into her 40s and won a slam in 2006 aged almost 50. What does that tell you about the standard of Evert and Navratilova “compared” to today?
@@BTURNER1961 Brilliant analysis. Evert was lethal! I've seen some clips of Court losing to Evert in around 74/75. She looks confused, angry and incredulous.

Tactically they had to be precise. Their control was phenomenal. Today game lacks any mental chess. It's all about bashing without any purpose except to wait for the opponent to miss. Serena, Roger, Carlos, all possessed so much variety in their games. Very different game now.

Actually given the racquet and string technology, the pace was impressively solid. They would beat todays 4.5 or 5.0 mens usta league, almost 40 years apart!

You can’t compare eras. Different rackets, strings, training, diet, etc. The surfaces are also more similar than the 1980s.
