Good video. The operation of the GST transmission reminds me of the Select-O-Speed transmission on the old Ford tractors. Nothing beats a good 'ole geared transmission for getting power to the rear wheels.
Your videos are such an education for us novices and the tractor community. And they will certainly put the Messicks name at the forefront of the Kubota dealers.
We've had a L3130 GST since 2005. We bought it new in 2005. The GST works well. I was a little concerned about the servos at the beginning, but now the L3130 has over 2000 hours, this includes loader work such as clearing small trees and loading dirt. The only problem with the GST on our tractor is the wiring that controls the GST at the transmission. You cannot afford to let any brush go under the tractor if it is over about 12 inches high. For instance you are clearing a plot of ground with privet hedge, if a broken hedge slips under the bucket and goes under the tractor it could pull the wires from the GST. (The GST plug does have somewhat of a guard, but it will not withstand a stick or small branch). I've had this to happen on a few occasions, then depending on yours surrounding you may need to walk the tractor back with the bucket, with engine off and all attachment lowered to the ground crawl under the tractor and reattach the two wires. All in all I like the GST and L3130 tractor.
my grand L 4060 TLB is one heavy duty compact tractor I'm not sorry for the purchase. the BH 92 backhoe can dig over 10 ft deep and can move some able sized boulders. with the loaded tires on the rear i find it a little light in the rear for snow removal with the backhoe removed, thinking of installing rear chains and maybe a good heavy duty backblade it's a 2018 model and just turned over 800 hrs works excellent and would highly reccomend this model.
nice clear video, Neil your dead on, my mx5100 Hydro is one tuff machine, but my M5-091 Does the hard pulling. ran a L4600 gst with the mx5100 clearing wood lot. the Hydo had to be at a higher rpm, all great Kubotas!
I still like mine . A hydro would be faster at loader work but I like not having to keep the engine at high rpm to keep the pumps happy. Most of my loader work I do now without clutching and at idle speed with foot throttle assist as needed . Most people would prefer a hydro I just don’t maybe one day.
Are the gear and range ratios similar to a manual shift model and, what are the wear and potential weak points in the shifting mechanism (smaller clutches)? Thanks!
I love my 1992 kubota L 2550gst! Perfekt even fore my small homestead, it's awsome. I do not loose 20% horsepower like you do on those fu#ing hst bullschit, the best when you stay >30hp
I recently traded a TC30 for a L3830GST Always having to clutch to change directions is a hard habit to break .And from the wear on the pedal I could tell the previous owner was a old timer like me. Does it hurt the transmission to clutch when I shuttle ???? I don't clutch when I change gears. Just direction . I will have to tie my leg back to break this 40 years of training . I am trying though. Thank you and I do order parts from u from time to time.
I was wondering that same thing if you would case problems if you actually used the clutch changing between forward & reverse....I'd think it wouldn't hurt anything, and probably would extend the life by easing the tractor between forward and reverse rather than the tractor having to do that.
Great explanation. Odd that this is a mowing machine and it is equipped with a R-1 tires. Also, if the buyer mowing so much ground, so often, this machine would certainly run a 12-15' turf batwing which would reduce mowing time?
Messick Farm Equipment OK, I thought this machine would run one. The 12’ BEFCO cyclone flex mower (212-706) that I have requires a minimum of 25 PTO HP. We run it with a Ford 3000 that is rated at about 37 PTO HP with no issues. I would at some point like to get a 4WD loader equipped machine that would run this mower as well. I should rule out the larger L series and go to the MX?
Yeah I guess I'm not totally right. There would be a handful of Low HP models you could get away with. IMO.. the MX is one of the best values in that size tractor. You should still take a look at the HST+ on the GL60 though.
I am looking into the L4060 for rough and finish grading on house pads, a friend uses a L4060 GST but I was thinking about an HST, What would you recommend?
I would love the LX to offer the GST. My right hip is toast and the chunky treadle pedal really wears me out after an hour of operations. May jump to Grand L just for the GST…
Yes, The forward, reverse lever has neutral in the middle. While in gear just move the lever to neutral. If not on flat ground you will have to use the brake pedal to stop. I have a L4630 with this transmission and find it better to use than any HST unless you only use your tractor for loader work and if you do you might be better off with a skid steer loader.
Messick Farm Equipment also if you are pulling tillage equipment can you push your clutch in, stop, and select a better gear and release the clutch like a basic gear transmission to keep from slamming the machine into gear?
I generally would not use it for changing directions but say I was headed back into a parking spot, I would depress the clutch when rolling into place.
GST is the only transmission I have ever owned and will only buy GST tractors. Idiot proof for employees and Kubota should think hard about limiting their models with HST or geared transmissions.
Great to know. I have been using an elderly neighbor's L3430 GST to do work for him and for myself. I have been using the clutch like it's the law - just as I have for all things all my life. I didn't know any better till I read it here. I am about to buy this tractor from him and these videos and comments are helping me with my decision. I like the GST tranny, despite my lack of knowledge about how it is intended to work. From your comment, it looks like it may be harder for my son-in-laws to tear up should they use it. They tend to be a bit hard on things...

I LOVE my L3940 with the GST transmission!
my l4200 with the GST is very nice and works great for loader work

Kubota should have stayed with this design, Great Transmission
Agree. I had a L5030. I will buy a tractor but it will be glide shift or shuttle shift. No hydro for me.
Are the gear and range ratios similar to a manual shift model and, what are the wear and potential weak points in the shifting mechanism (smaller clutches)? Thanks!
It remindes me on old Ford select-o-speed transmission's

Cutting grass with AG tires?

storemannc - Clutching is not harmful. I have an L4310 GST and I always clutch between forward and reverse and also to start and stop.

+leelizvid this is not enough power for a batwing.
Messick Farm Equipment OK, I thought this machine would run one. The 12’ BEFCO cyclone flex mower (212-706) that I have requires a minimum of 25 PTO HP. Thanks. Very informative.
I have a gst l6060 with a loader and love it
I like GST. :-)
I am looking into the L4060 for rough and finish grading on house pads, a friend uses a L4060 GST but I was thinking about an HST, What would you recommend?
Wish you could get a GST in a L01 series. It is why I am still considering a Deere 3R
Deere does not offer anything like a GST?
Messick's Equipment they have a power reverser which isn’t the same but similar concept besides clutching in Between gears
So when do you use the clutch and why is it there?
When you use the PTO, never wrong in an emergansy either.
I had a kubota L3830HST tractor once. What is the closest tractor to that that kubota sales in 2022?
I would love the LX to offer the GST. My right hip is toast and the chunky treadle pedal really wears me out after an hour of operations. May jump to Grand L just for the GST…
Why don't you just get cruise control for your LX?
Is this canopy a Kubota factory or dealer installed option? Can the GST transmission be outfitted with a creeper gear package?
+CreekShoreFarms both dealer options
Messick Farm Equipment thanks for the quick response. I can't find any info online for creeper speeds. How much slower is it?
Not for me. HST all the way!
I have a 1995 L3600 gst that’s stuck in 4th gear. Been a great tractor but guess it’s time fo a trans service.
So what is the clutch pedal for???
To disengage the implement. Such as a bushhog.
Can you stop the tractor while it’s in gear without pressing the clutch?
No
Yes, The forward, reverse lever has neutral in the middle. While in gear just move the lever to neutral. If not on flat ground you will have to use the brake pedal to stop. I have a L4630 with this transmission and find it better to use than any HST unless you only use your tractor for loader work and if you do you might be better off with a skid steer loader.
does this transnission system work mechanically or is there some electronics to it?
+JCLawn51 minimal electronics. Its roots are 20 years old. Not like today's electronics.
Messick Farm Equipment also if you are pulling tillage equipment can you push your clutch in, stop, and select a better gear and release the clutch like a basic gear transmission to keep from slamming the machine into gear?
+JCLawn51 yes.
So what is the clutch used for on the tractor?
+FrostFilms100 starting it. I also roll to a stop with it.
So you dont have to use the clutch while changing from forward to reverse but you can. But you personally do?
I generally would not use it for changing directions but say I was headed back into a parking spot, I would depress the clutch when rolling into place.
You have too use the clutch when hooking up attachments and in delicate tight situations
Nice!
like my GST
Can you put a cab on it
+DJ Tebben no factory cab for the GST trans. You could use an aftermarket.
Messick Farm Equipment k,thank you love the videos
