People "didn't use to make them by hands many years ago". People DO make them by hands in Sicily... It's so simple: Just spread a good amount of rice all over one hand, get the filling with the other hand, put in the middle of the rice and then with both hands create a cone (an upside down cone to be precise), start making circulatory movements creating the tip with the low part of your palm and, by bending your fingers, you create the base. Final result would be a cone

What kind of rice did you use
Do you need to oil the base so the rice comes out easy, or, not nessasary?
You don’t need to oil the base at all.
The butter In the Arborio rice does the trick!!!
