silly question but, how do you know when to throw one of these diy toys out? I'm guessing after a week?

I wait till stuff is shredded or smells. Or has been pooped or peed on.
Since these are made to shred i watch to see how much they are doing that, and remove when they get fairly “empty”.
Then i take whatever is left apart and just put it in the cage when i clean the next time. Sort of “priming” the nest making
