I definitely get what Pekora was talking about. When you receive money from pity it makes you feel worse, even if it's a nice gesture. She'd rather get money when she does something that made people laugh or excited, as a reward for being a good entertainer. Also not having any physical money on you of course doesn't mean you are poor. These days many people pay way more with card than in the past. If you stay at home a lot (like a Vtuber) you also don't really need emergency money for travel fare or anything.
That being said, considering what a cut UA-cam and the company take from her donations, she still isn't rich even if people gave her these generous Superchats all the time.

Actually japan doesn’t really use credit cards as much; even though they have them. They usually carry cash. Hence her connotation of not having even a single 500 yen.
And since everything is relatively close - depending on where she lives - she really doesn’t need to go far at all to get necessities.
Even as a vtuber she has to go to hololives company office every now and then. Sometimes they stream from there it seems. At least from some clips I’ve seen of them talking about what happened after work.

Im not sure if she intended to do it or not, but its totally a 5D simp bait move. And when people say 'please dont give me money', it just makes fans want to give more. At this point I think all the senpai's and EN make a good amount of money, and people at the top like Gura are raking it in. For example Amelia just bought a $2000 3090 GPU, all of EN have $1000+ audio, and Amelia plans to buy a $1600 mic, several of them are moving or plan to rent an office. So the idols make good money these days. I think only the male idols make peanuts because they dont get many viewers or fans.
