  • I don't use a lot of green wood but I do many handyman jobs that involve water getting into places it shouldn't be. So I reached out to my friends at ‪@CarbatecTheHomeOfWoodworking‬ and asked if I could "borrow" one of their handy-dandy moisture reader thingos to help me out with a couple of jobs. Let's take a look at their version of this useful tool

      G'day Luke, cheers mate. I was wondering how you avoided popping up in my feed, and I see your passion lies in a battery free world :D Yeah, me and hand tools are only just getting to know each other 😅 Looks like you've built a cracking little channel on the topic. My time is thin as a new dad but I've popped you on the list to check out :D --James

    The only trouble with pin meters is they only measure as deep as the pins go, if you keep a piece of each species in your workshop and never use it when it comes to it you can weigh the board and compare it to the same species you’re not sure of the MC. Pin meters can’t tell if the wood has case hardening either, rare to find but it does happen.

    • @FixitFingers
      @FixitFingers  7 місяців тому +1

      Cheers Ben, insightful as always. I've seen the fancy pinless ones but this is my first experience with either. For what I mostly use it for, detecting water damage, the targeted pins are probably superior, but those fancy pinless ones I am guessing are faster and can penetrate deeper in the wood for drying your own timber yes?

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe 7 місяців тому +1

      @@FixitFingers depends dude, some read to 20mm depth some 30mm. So you’re covered for 40 and 60mm thickness boards. You can get the pin version that read deeper, they come with a sliding hammer (old school) rare as rocking horse shit though and huge holes 🤦🏻‍♂️ I learnt all this the hard way, used some seasoned wood thinking it was kiln, the piece ripped itself to pieces over the season indoors.

    Thanks, mate. It's quite handy for us as I have been looking at some pretty ordinary moisture meters for use with firewood. This eliminates my purchase apprehension.

    • @FixitFingers
      @FixitFingers  7 місяців тому +1

      Working well for me. My only apprehension is that when I added the Amazon link for the overseas people... there are similar looking ones for 1/3 of the price. Having not used a cheaper one I don't know how much their quality drops off at that price, but Carbatec's one will be covered by their standard warranty and you can call them up and talk to a real person if you have any issues :)

    I have the exact same meter, only it's branded differently, and the button is round. Other than that it's identical, and in that $100 price range. Yes you can buy way more expensive ones, $500 or more, and I suppose they may be worth it. But if you lose it, loan it out and it doesn't come back, or just out rightly damage it, like say a certain grandchild runs over it with a forklift, not mentioning any names. There are fewer tears in the beer when it's only $100 to replace it. Just sayin'.
    I use mine all the time. One, to check lumber for when I go to build a piece of furniture, to make sure that the moisture content of my materials is identical. Two, to check the content of the lumber that I mill, so I know when that lumber is ready for use. Three, this is where I use it the most, is on logs that I'm going to buck into firewood. Firewood is ideal between 15 & 20% moisture content. It really helps to reduce the creosote build up in the chimney when the moisture content is in that sweet spot.
    It's one of those tools you think you didn't need, until you have one. Kinda like a tablesaw James. 😉
    Speaking of moisture content, how's the weather been on the southern end of the planet? It's been an unusually dry winter here. The snow farmers, (ski hill operators), have barely been able to stay open. It's kind of tough on your boards when there's no snow to ski on. The same goes for snowmobiling, I've been out exactly twice this year, and both times the snow was terrible, in some spots non existent. I feel kind of bad for the guys who've spent 25 grand this year on a new sled, just to have it sitting there, making payments, and not being able to ride it. I have a couple of buddies who've bought new sleds, and they're not happy. It's like going out on a date and not getting kissed.
    Even though this last week we were hit with a half a metre of snow, we still don't have half the snow we should normally have. Spring run off is going to be pretty quick this year. The rivers and creeks are going to be a little low this summer. Gold panning will be good, be able to get into areas that are normally under water. But on the other hand the forests could get as dry as a popcorn fart. In which case the ministry could just shut the bush down completely to any activities. That's happened before.
    Anyways James, have fun with your new moisture meter, going around and testing everything, including humans to see if they're wood chipper ready, or if they need to be baked in the sun a little longer.
    Time to take the long commute across the yard and go to work. Got sawdust to make, and hearts to break. Besides it's the youngest daughter's leap birthday, she turns nine today. I wonder what kind of alcohol a leap nine year old is going to be partaking in? 🤔
    Cheers. 👋 🇨🇦

      Andy! Great to hear from you mate. Yes, this one is branded under licence to many tool stores around the world I am sure. I dream of a fire place again having grown up in a house with one, something very primal about it modern heaters can't match. Unfortunately until we break out of apartment living we are stuck with reverse cycle AC :P We've had an unseasonably wet summer, so it looks like the world is confused and sent the snow to wrong end. Same swings and roundabouts. Rain in summer has meant many fewer fires and full dams, but ruined many a tourists holiday in the sunny contient! Happy 9th birthday to the slowly aged. My little one will be 4 months tomorrow and is doing well. Except we have to keep explaining to folks she is in fact half asian as she white as a winter in Nunavut! 🤣
