  • Sparkleballs are those kooky homemade outdoor lighted Christmas balls that you see hanging in trees around the holidays. You make them with plastic cups and Christmas lights. Ben Starr shows you how.

    I absolutely love your instructional style. It's very informative and animated. Love the visuals.
    Seen plenty of other sparkleball videos and none of them compare to yours. Will definitely
    use your video as a guide in making my own sparkleballs so I can have them ready by this christmas. Thanks so much for showing your passion for art.

    I hadn't considered fusing the cups together by melting with a soldering iron.. gonna try that! You are exactly right- they won't be perfect. When they are hanging & lit up at night, no one will notice & they will still look cool!

    Debbie, just hold your soldering iron pointed down over a newspaper after every 10 or so holes and the plastic will drop off the tip. There will still be blackened burnt plastic on the tip, but this never affected the overall look of the sparkleball...my holes were never dark. The soldering iron should QUICKLY melt the holes, there shouldn't be burning. (You may have a different type of plastic, though.) The strings are unavoidable, just pull them off after they set.

    Freaking LOVE this! The soldering iron is genius-- so much easier & cleaner-looking than stapling.

      This is a great demo video. I am following the video and making Sparkle Balls ready for Christmas. I had terrible trouble getting the right size cups in the UK, but now I have found them on Ebay: Solo 50 x 9oz Clear Plastic Cups. Ideal for Sparkle Ball. 50 Cups Per Pack. Once again thanks

    Keep the cups stacked as packaged and then in one swope melt holes thru all cups stacked. this method takes seconds--or just keep on melting holes one cup at a time. I use this method to make water holes thru plastic bowls, etc to turn into planters.

    rather than a soldering iron heated, you can use a long round screwdriver heated over the flame of my gas stove to melt the holes thru the center of the stacked cups--just make sure the round end is the right diameter needed for the lights.

    So in his example he is using those bigger LED lights and I went ahead and tried to make it with teh same exact cups he used and it was two flat sides so it looks like a smooshed ball.. but it doesn't really matter when it's dark and hanging it looks great! now 3 more. I also put way too many bulbs in it. 200 so I made 4 holes in each cup... a waste. Doing 2 holes for the next ones.

    Have you tried using the green and red cups in the same style that you have to make red and green balls for LOR?

  • @nancyweeal1
    @nancyweeal1 12 років тому

    FYI - 50 cups for one sparkleball =
    Step 1 - Join 12cups for 1st layer,
    Step 2 - Join 9 cups for 2nd layer,
    Step 3 - Join the 2nd layer (9) to 1st Layer (12),
    Step 4 - Top with 4 to complete a semi-circule of 25 cups.
    Do the some for another semi-circule of 25 cups, insert led lights and
    join both semi-circule to form a ball. Complete :)

    How do you keep your soldering iron clean from all the plastic and not leave dark holes with strings all over the cups?

  • @therovingwino
    @therovingwino 12 років тому

    I used to find these cups everywhere. Now all I find are 9 oz cups that appear to be the wrong size. I have gone to several grocery stores, Sam's Club, Smart & Final, Party City and none work with the 12 cup original circle. It's not like I'm out in te boonies as I'm located in SoCal. Do you know of a good online place that will get me them CHEAP and FAST?

    Se necesita 50 copas de 9 onsas; el demonstro con un soldador, pero es muy toxico. Puedes usar una grampador. Y compra luces de 50 o cien de LED es mejor porque ya haciendolo no puedes cambiar los luces. Preguntas?
