    You guys are definitely correct that the method shown on most UA-cam channels is not terribly effective. However, there is a better way! I definitely recommend checking out my videos 753 (introducing the new/superior method) and 760 (testing the new method with beefier locks).

    • @cringeyusername7459
      @cringeyusername7459 5 років тому +13

      They're testing the technique shown in 100's of lifehack videos. Yes, the lockpickinglawyer's video shows the best way to do it, but that's not the point of this video. Also, even with the modified technique, bolt cutters are still very clearly the far superior and more reliable method if you're using brute force. You could probably even just use a hammer. This two wrench thing is a completely useless idea because in all honesty, what are the odds that you are going to end up in a situation where you have to bypass a padlock, and have no tools other than 2 wrenches? That's the point this video is trying to make, and this is why Brian was becoming increasingly frustrated with this ridiculous made for clicks idea that's been uploaded and rehashed by 100's of lifehack videos.

    • @mack-about
      @mack-about 5 років тому +4

      I disagree - for example, apart from having a set of wrenches at my apartment, I also keep a few of them in the trunk of my car, but I don't have bolt cutters at all.
      Here's the link to the better method:
      ua-cam.com/video/dBSSA5ot0tA/v-deo.html

    • @ModernRogue
      @ModernRogue  5 років тому +9

      Very well put. This was a groaner of a hack in our books, and it just seems like you should use bolt cutters.
      (And remember: we’re “legend testers”, not “testers of proven correct techniques.”)

    • @SloopLow
      @SloopLow 5 років тому +2

      @@cringeyusername7459 No. They were clearly using the wrong sized wrenches. They even noticed that themselves but weren't sure if it would be better than carrying around the bolt cutters. The thing is, even two larger wrenches are easy to sneak around because you can manipulate/hide them separately and you cant take apart the bolt cutters. People don't seem to understand that this method isn't supposed to be better or easier than bolt cutters as far as actually breaking the lock, but just an easily accessible alternative that does work if you do it correctly.

    You can turn the wrenches 90° instead and pull up on the shackle and the mechanism securing the shackle which is weaker in almost all circumstances. So you put one wrench in like you already did, then the other wench is vertical instead and then it applies the force upwards on the shackle. As many people have mentioned this is the method demonstrated by lockpickinglawyer.

    As you said at the top of the show, the right wrenches make all the difference. I've done this at home on locks with rusted shut cores and it is easy as pie, assuming you use the right wrenches. This admittedly did take about 10 min of trial and error. That still beat hauling a generator and angle grinder out to the storage shed.

    • @ModernRogue

      Yeah, I think our point was just that so many videos act like this is practical and easy, but if we're going to play the "well, obviously you need the right tool for the right job" game, then our non-controversial take is that the right tool is.... bolt cutters.

    As many other have said, LockPickingLawyer
    has a good video explaining how a better way to open them is to have one horizontal and one vertical wrench. To sum up his video, what you're doing when you use the two wrenches as you were is you're applying all of the force against the outside casing, which is designed to be difficult to break. What you're doing with a vertical wrench is using the force to push upwards, which puts all of the force onto what is usually a small piece of malleable brass that keeps the shackle in place in the lock.ua-cam.com/video/dBSSA5ot0tA/v-deo.html

    I used this at my security job almost three years ago. It works just fine on the crap locks most people use. We had to cut employee locks off of lockers when they lost keys or forget combinations but didn’t have bolt cutters at that campus. We did have a well stocked plant ops workshop.

  • @ryandavis4689
    @ryandavis4689 5 років тому +3

    Hammers work well. 1 or 2 well placed strikes and if done right the lock may still function

  • @yayedu
    @yayedu 5 років тому +7

    I could mention LockpickingLayer's video as everybody else, but i wont.
    You have to realize that every lock has a different weak point. Maybe Master locks are as cheap as they come, but their body being different sheets of metal pressed toghether make it very hard for this method to work since it dispereses the force that you aplly with the wrenches to every single sheet at the same time.
    If you had used a lock with a body with a single metal piece, I assure you it would have broken it as easy as the videos you've seen.
    Points for effort though

      Top notch observation. Master Lock makes garbage cores and many of their locks are shimable due to poor design. But the laminated steel is solid. Matt Carriker (Demolition Ranch) tried shooting through locks as seen on tv. He proved that this is NOT a reliably effective way to open them. The laminated steel certainly lends some credibility to Master.
