Just discovered you because I just discovered fountain pens and I just bought this beauty as my first foray into fountain pen heaven, which I see you keep excellent track of! Thank you, kind Sir, for your time and effort and in sharing this information. I found it fascinating and look forward to my education :) Have a lovely day, live with peace, live with joy!
Thanks, Chris. I got the piston out as well. Apparently some others have found their pistons move further down and have greater capacity than ours did. I'm going to play with mine to see what I can do.
I bought two of the N7 pens (so far inking and writing only with the blue with the unusual cap). I am very happy with the peacock look, the nib, and the piston mechanism. I have written with it for more than two weeks. Its nib has stayed wet, written each time I have pulled out of the pen holder and used it. I view it as an excellent pen just as it came. I hope the other is as good. I am pleased with the purchase. Thanks again for pointing the way. K
A lovely looking pen. I have to say many many thanks for the heads up on the Black N6 I hadn't noticed it before and once seen I just couldn't resist ordering one!
I love stealth pens. I may have to pull the trigger on this one. Thanks, Doug, for mentioning this. The N7 looks really attractive, but I'm a bit worried about the mix of plastic and metal threads, esp. after reading some comments about the section threads on the relaunched Parker 51 that chip off already.
Oops I accidentally hit the send button! And as I was saying, thanks for all the many videos You make, I really appreciate and enjoy them! Thanks again!

I just received mine (the grey one). I love it! I have purchased many fountain pens over the years, at many price points, and this is my new favorite. The build quality, styling, nib smoothness, and feel in the hand is perfect for me. I have smaller hands and will be using this pen for sketching.
Excellent guitar intro! One of my favorite pieces from one of my favorite bands. Thanks for reviewing this blue beauty. I’m torn between this and the red N8 maple leaf.
Thanks for the review. For me this is one of the most beautiful pens I have seen at any price point. I’m sure I will need to order fast now that we all know about this gorgeous pen.
Just bought this from aliexpress, it should arrive in 2 months, im going to use it to draw and write! I'll come back here and share my thoughts after trying it for a while :)
You got me! I opted for the blue-green one. The attraction was to the artistic scrolling on the nib, the ink window, the acrylic body, and, for me a rare choice, the metal cap. I have one Montblanc Writer’s Edition with a metal cap. This pen will be my second pen with an acrylic body and a metal cap. Thanks! KW
I am still writing with it (3 weeks now), and I have had no problems. It seems to me that it is as good as any Narwahl pen I have (three of those, I think), but this is priced significantly lower. Love the ink window; the piston works very well; design is uniquely superior!
I am still writing with this Peacock green finish N7, very very wet EF nib I have, I did not expect EF to be soooo wet... not scratchy at all, and Rober Oster Fire and Ice ink has a very deep teal colour. Recently I made an order for the moon rabbit finish with a F nib, the bad thing is changing nib requires a lot of effort.
I did not realize the click while posting until I watched this video, thanks! I have been writing with this pen for a few days, a total of 8 sheets of A4 paper, and the EF nib writes great on any paper. However because I have been writing with Pelikan gold nib for quite sometime I felt this Hongdian nib to be extremely stiff, I like stiff nib because I love exerting pressure against the paper with my pen (just my style) and I will be sure that I will not break the nib from the feed :D
Another great review Doug & to be honest between your review & Chrisrap review i could not choose between the 2 pens so sod it i got both.O Doug please keep us up to date on the piston removal tool on etsy .THANKS👍.

The grey version of the Hongdian arrived and yes, this is a winner. The weight is nice but the balance and feel are terrific. I will probably chuck the nib but I will give it a try first.
Dr. Doug, another very good review. Thanks. Nice pen, but I need another pen about as much as I need another hole in my head. So, of course I ordered it and I was fortunate enough to get it at the new, improved price. I like the nib pretty well on the N6 but don't know yet if I'll be swapping the nib on the N7 until I write with it.
Thanks for this review! While I am waiting for the Red Maple Leaf pen to come from China, I ordered this one from Amazon. Arrived today. I am curious to see your review, and which ink you chose. :) Such a pretty pen!
I have the same pen and same problem with fitting other #6 nibs. It turns out the regular #6 is about 2mm longer than Hongdian nib. Not a fan of Hongdian stock nib, I grind down a Jinhao nib to fit on it, now I am really loving it 😊
Greetings from Australia. I'm getting quite a collection of Hongdian pens. Out of the orange N1s and N7 peacock, which is the best in your opinion. I can get them both with Long Knife nibs.
Wow! Is that a No.6 nib? The biggest issue I have with HD is the use of F/EF No.5s, which I want to replace with Medium or Broad. It's easier to get a good range of nibs in No.6 (especially in black, like for my Black Army General).
Indeed it is. Both the N6 and the N7 sport #6 nibs. But as I said in the review, the N7's cap is too short to accept MOST standard #6 size nibs when swapping.
Really nice looking pen! Though I'm kind of on a break from getting pens right now, should this be still available in a few months, I may have to get one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, and the early shout out to Canada's favourite nerds next door (the Barenaked Ladies. 😁)
@@kiraniumbra My wife's Pilot Decimo is a VERY smooth medium nib. My Majohn A1 was an EF, but it was leaky and scratchy and I replaced it with a medium Pilot gold VP nib unit.
@InkquiringMinds Doug, I was after a piston filler (all my pens are Converters) just to try and this looks like an excellent intro pen. BUT I have had a hard time finding anything but F and EF nibs (My X159 F is the same as most M, but looking at your writing sample, this F is actually F). I finally found a vendor on AliX that has M nibs (only in silver, not fussed that's simply cosmetic) and based on your (as usual) excellent review, I'll get one of those. Prices around AUD$48 (about $30 in your money). And found an interesting thing about piston fillers (my First). If the piston filler end cap is a little loose, tightening it up deposits an amount of ink in places you don't want an amount of ink deposited.
@@InkquiringMinds Update: Probably at the limit of what I now want to spend, but what a terrific FP. The nib (which is on the FINE side of MEDIUM) writes buttery smooth, wet with iroshizuku Take-Sumi ink (little to no feedback and no flex). Great weight in the hand and simple/functional filling. Oh, and 3/4 turn cap off, that's good. It has now become my best favourite pen. I think I prefer if over the X159 and x850 (but these are also great pens for the price). And the looks are stunning. I'd have no problem using this in a boardroom (if I ever was in a boardroom).
Beautiful pen, right up my ally. . . just have to wait until i'm off of this weird lamy thing I have going on. I don't know why but my tastes have swerved off a bridge and I just want super wet hooded nibs, lamy cc gold nib, and a the newer thinner penlux. Hope to be back to normal soon.
I believe we are on the same page aesthetically. However, I am considering.a Pelikan as my next MAJOR pen purchase. You mentioned a different feel between the N7 and the M800. My question is, would the N7 be a good test pen to base my decision on? Love your videos.
Not really. They might be similar in size and slightly in over-all shape, but in the hand, they are VERY different. The Pelikan M800 is just perfection - a sublime writing experience unlike any other I've found.
The pen is still available on Ebay for $27 which isnt too shabby.. I think I would have picked this up in a second, as i think its gorgeous, except for the fact it cant take a standard #6 nib which is a real shame. A nice clean jowo nib on this would have been perfect.
It’s quite odd - as I noted on Chrisrap’s video, my N7 (grey version) has an easily unscrewable nib unit which I have now confirmed is interchangeable with the nib unit of my N1S piston filler. Also, the piston travel on my N7 seems to be much more than Chris showed at about 25mm (1 inch). Ink capacity is about 1.5ml measured by weight. On my N1S the the piston travels about 17mm. But anyway, these are still great pens, but while the barrel material of the peacock version is very nice, the cap is just a bit too ‘bling’ for me.
Hello there Sir please review the Hong Dian N6 black! It looks gorgeous! And I plan to get one for Myself! But if You review it, I can make an informed decision! Thanks for all of Your ma
There we go, between this and Chris's review I can breathe easy. Now if only it would hurry up and get here! Spoiler alert, in the same package is the N6 all black with long knife nib.
This looks like a winner. Looking forward to receiving the grey version and I will immediately swap the nib out. Good review! FYI - They are still 27 to 29 dollars on ebay.
Beautiful pen. I think it would have been even more so if they had made the barrel powder coated but my guess it that a metal barrel would have added too much weight perhaps. On another note, this Claire Fontaine lady needs to comp you some paper. You advertise for her every week! LOL Thanks for making my Saturday morning.
It's so weird that the piston doesn't go further back. I wish someone disassembled it to tell for sure if it's impossible to adjust. Maybe they just wanted to make sure it will never blot ink, thus made too small capacity, who knows.
I ordered a blue one from Aliexpress, home in less than 10 days. Not lucky with the "pagoda" F nib: it is not smooth and has quite a few fails whilst writing... It will definitely require some work or a nib swap.
@@InkquiringMinds No, I meant that the length of the barrel itself was about 14 centimeters, because the hong dian 1841 is 12 cm long without a cap, it is a bit short for me.
Well, another one that won't go on my list. I'm just not a fan of those metal caps on these. I hope they get around to offering a model in the same beautiful, chatoyant resin for the cap and section as well (section won't matter so much) as the body. The 20% jump in price because the pen turned out to be popular kind of put me off, too.

@@InkquiringMinds No, it is not. It was good for me to see the image of the Pelikan you showed, the girth looks very similar. I was planning to buy it, now I know that I won't. I like the way the Hongdian writes, I even like the F nib. I already have it, I'm going to use it, and perhaps I'll get use to. Of all my pens the Ranga 4 is among the very best in terms of writing experience and the girth (thanks to your review), very comfortable, a real delight. Also the Xezo Abalone Sea Shell, an excellent writer and a beauty to hold. Do you want to know something funny, the Ranga extra pen they send as a gift, a two dollar pen, it's fantastic, a great writer and an eye dropper. It never fails and can carry a ton of ink!
Hi Doug, a little helpful hint for you about the HongDian N6, N7 & 100: These fountain pens have an ink capacity of approx. 1ml ex works. However, this can be significantly increased with a small harmless intervention. I found a video that explains this. The link attached here starts the video at the corresponding point at minute 8.30. ua-cam.com/video/jaKSoxzlfT4/v-deo.html I hope this helps you as well as it helped me. Kind regards

Aaaah!, too big... sigh, well, then my fourth pen would be the twsbi... I wanted something cheaper and beautiful.
Thank you for everything.
Hola. ¿Que tinta turkesa usa en la introducción de sus revisiones? Cordial saludo desde Medellin Colombia

@@InkquiringMinds Nice Spanish Doug!
And thank you for taking the time to reply in another language to questions.
Eres muy bienvenido
@@InkquiringMinds Gracias de nuevo por los excelentes videos y por toda tu ayuda!
I ordered a blue one from Aliexpress, home in less than 10 days. Not lucky with the "pagoda" F nib: it is not smooth and has quite a few fails whilst writing...
It will definitely require some work or a nib swap.
My vote for the ‘most gorgeous pen in recent times’ goes to this pen !
Too bad it isn’t available on Amazon..
Apparently they are still cheaper on eBay.
Are 123 mm enough for an adult? I'm afraid this pen will be uncomfortable in use
Very comfortable pen!
@@InkquiringMinds sorry for the intrusiveness, but could you advise an inexpensive pen, which is about 14 cm long
@@АлександрТорянников The Jinhao 80 is exactly 140mm long capped, is very inexpensive and a great writer.
@@InkquiringMinds No, I meant that the length of the barrel itself was about 14 centimeters, because the hong dian 1841 is 12 cm long without a cap, it is a bit short for me.
You might want to try a Moonman/Majohn A1 capless. They are 14cm with the nib extended.
Fair enough! According to Stefan, they are still in the $27 range on eBay.
😀😀😊🤓 Sweet n sour Chicken taught Is a cough syrup ....guess it might be the same without the additive. Like your hard work making it humourous🤠😎⭐✒️😀😀😀😀 guess I won't call the police?😀⭐
LOL
Quite a nice pen although I have to say I prefer the Gray resin version.
The grey wasn't available when I purchased, but I still would have chosen the peacock.
I like almost everything about this pen. For me the section is too thick, not too comfortable to write with. Little detail but makes a difference.
The girth of the section is not just a little detail!
Hi Doug,
a little helpful hint for you about the HongDian N6, N7 & 100:
These fountain pens have an ink capacity of approx. 1ml ex works.
However, this can be significantly increased with a small harmless intervention.
I found a video that explains this.
The link attached here starts the video at the corresponding point at minute 8.30.

I hope this helps you as well as it helped me.
Kind regards
Thanks, SteamDevil's Pen Pit, for the excellent information! Getting those parts to line up properly is always a pain! I never noticed those two lines on the Hongdian before.
@@InkquiringMinds It's always a pleasure to have helped.
After all, we fountain pen enthusiasts have to stick together.
And just as you've inspired me to make a few purchases, it was at least something helpful to contribute as well.
Friendly greetings
SteamDevil
1ml capacity doesn't sound like a lot.
It is pretty good actually.
@@InkquiringMinds Gotta get one then. 😉
Maybe just a little too fine for me.
Me too. It would be great if they came out with a medium.
@@InkquiringMinds Made for Chinese Caligraphy and characters, not Western. I think that's the main issue. Just have to battle away with my Lamy 2000 oblique medium nib.
就我来看,永生很擅长做金笔尖,但是杆子做得不好。
弘典基本上反过来,金笔尖一塌糊涂,但是杆子比永生好多了
In my opinion ,Wingsung is good at making golden nibs, but they don’t made good barrel.
Honhdian on the contrary, good at making barrels, but for their 14k nib and ebonite feed…All I want to say is disaster.
Cough syrup 😂
LOL!
Oh? So. I'll send you US$210 for your Pelikan and include yet another of these your favorite Hondgian N7s in exchange. A deal?
NFW Dude! LOL
@@InkquiringMinds Hah. Sorry. I am an old guy (74). Do you mean by NFW: the

@@user-br3sl9go3b LOL No Freakin Way! :)
@@InkquiringMinds Ha! Thanks (I guess). But at least now I get it.
A huge NOPERS to all the FP's with welded nibs
Yikes
Welded? All nibs that have tipping are welded.
@@InkquiringMinds "welded" = hard to swap/remove/replace
You know what I mean. HND
But how do I load it? This is my first fountain pen. I was impressed with your video until it didn't explain the ink filling part🥹
It is a piston filler (in the title). Turn the knob all the way, put the nib in ink and turn the knob back.
