  • Brian McLaren joins me in this episode to discuss his new book Life After Doom. In it, we wrestle with redefining faith, civilization, and ecological consciousness. We delve into theological reflections, reinterpreting religious practices to align with Jesus's teachings, advocating for a paradigm shift in societal structures, and emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable living. Moreover, we discuss creating inclusive spaces for spiritual growth and action.

This 87 year old seeker is listening to this while eating her lunch alone and cheering Brian on! He is articulating many ideas that have been stirring in me.

Brian's premise that the wisdom of the Bible points to humanity's sacred duty to care for the Earth confirms the lessons taught by Dr. William Chalker (d. 2016)at the cooperative Synod Schools of Eastern Oregon, Boise, and Kendell Presbyteries which I attended at the College of Idaho during the late 1980'-early 90's. A revered professor of philosophy and religion at the College and minster of the Word for UPC/PCUSA, he was passionate about directing his student's eyes to humanity's role as caretakers and activists for Planet Earth. He, too, said, its all right there in the Bible if we only change our point of view (and I watched him weep in one class over the wanton genocide inflicted upon the Canaanites). His book, Science and Faith: Understanding Meaning, Method, and Truth (2006) reflects much of his work though the years. Now, we need to be the activists as we revisit the Bible with fresh eyes and panic.

Love the comment that we need to decide whether in caring for the world to come we need to decide if we want to be the midwives or the hospice care... Stealing that one! Amazon says I'll have your new book Tuesday Brian!

Such a great conversation, It is one each of our communities should be having. Sadly - I see very little evidence of the same. No one is in charge, leading us through this uncertain future. Our faith leaders are challenged in many ways, but nothing will be as challenging as what we are facing. Thank you, Tripp and Brian!

No. A whole new liturgy won’t do. The very idea and practices of liturgy itself is so much a part of the problematic civilisation. Sunday morning is a very intrinsic part of that same civilisation. Many of us who have detoxified our relationship with the transcendent by dropping all dogma and theology have long ceased to practice religion in any formal way. We pray and meditate. We fellowship, often in the wild, sometimes in ancient places, thin places, sacralised or sanctified by prayers. But to formally codify a faith, however new and emerging, would merely be to fall back into the trap of creating yet another damn religion.
