- Learn the simple guitar riff found in "Hey Hey, What Can I Do", "No Sugar Tonight", "Monkey Man", "My Generation", and others. This is one of many riff and lick shapes found in my free web app "The Building Blocks Of Rock", which you can find here:
guitarviz.com/bbr.html
(note: it's not an app like you download for your phone. It's just a web page, so all you have to do is open it.)
The video reviews these four songs along with other examples of this riff (which is often shown incorrectly in tabs and videos). Also, "My Generation" is used as an example of how using riffs instead of just ordinary chords can add interest to both the song and your playing.
The second half of the video is a lesson, filmed from player viewpoint including pick hand, on how to play this lick in "Hey Hey What Can I Do" and "No Sugar Tonight". The pick hand strumming in both these songs is not as simple as it looks, and is good practice for sixteenth note strumming. Other parts of both songs are also reviewed, with an emphasis on the different chord shapes ("voicings") used. I think I've covered all the parts of "Hey Hey What Can I Do", so it's pretty much a lesson on how to play the whole song.
Please leave comments or questions!
cheers, Kevin

This is the best guitar channel on UA-cam
Bro it really is
agreed. its old school and new school combined perfectly together.
Sure is turning out to be…
aw, thanks everyone! I'm working on more videos!
@@theBuildingBlocksOfRock yeh luv the style of teaching it's great
Imagine what he'll be able to do after 30 videos. Or 300 videos. This is impressive. 3 videos in, and this is incredible.
Thank you for making these videos. I could have saved *years* if I could have watched them when I was learning.
THIS is the best guitar teacher in the Universe. I can't wait until you make more videos. You explain guitars to knuckleheads. This is the knuckleheads guide to guitar. I love this. I can't wait for more.
No one else on YT shows or explains it like this gentlemen does.
Calling it now -- this channel is gonna blow up. What a great concept
I subscribed awhile ago and glad I did. Im 50, was a working drummer, self taught, till 30, then fatherhood. My son has NO interest in music, go figure. So, I didnt take it back up. He is off into the world soon, we have limited room, so I chose to take up the guitar. Your channel has helped me with my 2nd year of playing and 1st year of theory. Im fighting age, and busted up hands from a life of being a laborer but I am improving.😊
I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I'm looking forward to sitting down with my guitar and playing along. I just want to say that I really like where this channel is going - this is a great resource.
I really hope you keep this up. Couldn't have come at a better time. Got my enthusiasm back.
Terrific and unique approach. One hell of an effort with all the music references. I fully expect this channel to blow up.
This is a really refreshing approach, looking forward to more content.
Explained so well and you can see the finger actually on the fretboard so clearly.
Keep up the great work.
Hi. YOU are the instructor I've been looking for. I want to play the guitar, not learn music OR what my teacher wants me to learn. I tried to get my point across to them, to no avail.
Do you have a like minded instructor ANYWHERE in the greater Denver metropolitan area?
You are practical and FABULOUS. 😊
I think Randy was doing hammer-ons at the beginning of that D chord? I can't thank you enough for these insightful videos!
This is a great idea for a channel, and a method of learning, keep 'em coming!
Good lesson.
Thanks.
Wow, this is really great! I learned more from one of your videos than I have from many, many other tutorials.
James James' channel is great. If you sift all the way through it there's a sad finale to it. Related to shoulder pain as I recall. Hope all is well with him.
Yours is a good channel too,BTW.
Excellent and informative lesson. Really appreciate your analysis.
Really appreciate your clear instruction and always thought i could pick up similarities in songs but no one ever explained or did a lessons on it...
Many thanks,
👍🎸🤘🇬🇧🇧🇷
Truly a labour of a lifetime. Loved the discussion about learning how to play before tablature & before the internet
Spot on playing …. I like the detailed timing and little nuances that make all the difference
Thank you. Your site already has 10k subs. Keep up the good work
Thank you again, great teacher.
Good stuff, you inspired me to finally restring my semi-acoustic and get practicing again.
This channel is gold ! Thank you !
I’ve never seen this riff before. Simple and sounds great. Keep them coming :)
Great "classic rock" guitar content. This channel is going to be very popular.
UA-cam showed me this channel a few days ago and when I went to check out other videos I was surprised to see that this is a new channel! I thought I would be digging into years of old videos but I guess we will have to wait for them. GREAT STUFF SO FAR !!!! Hope to see lots more. Thanks for doing this riff based angle on rock guitar !!!
notifications on. one of the most relaxing nightly channels. thx u for spreading the wealth of knowledge
Xcellant! 😎👏❤️👍
Just stumbled upon your channel. Great Stuff! You have a new subscriber!!
Your content is amazing, keep up the good work!
What a fascinating channel! Glad I found it.
Collective soul uses this a lot too.
Love your work daddio.
Another excellent lesson!
Super clear & super helpful!
James James has sadly published nothing on UA-cam for about two years. He had another channel Privettricker which he closed down about nine years ago. Lots of great material on both for a rhythm player to benefit from.
when I saw his last posted video was "The End" (Beatles), it sounded a bit ominous...
Great, great stuff!!!
Subscribed. Excellent presentation! All aspects.
Just subscribed. I'm a guitar noob, just playing around, learning to play songs I love. Not really aiming to be a musician. So I'm not really that motivated to learn theory, though I do dabble from time to time, trying to read about scales and stuff. But stumbling on this channel made me way more interested. Would be nice to have more "words" in my "vocabulary" while I'm trying to learn the whole language, if you catch my drift. Please do keep it up!
Very cool approach to sharing your guitar wisdom. I just subscribed not only for your lessons, but because I have the same great shirt. lol Cheers.
These are great! Thanks
I'm 46 years old and have been playing guitar for 5 years. Your videos have gotten me out of a rut. Thanks!
cool video, Kevin!
Been waiting for video number 3. You are the man🙏
Amazing.
You are great !!
Do you tune your 12-string to standard pitch? Or are you supposed to tune a half or full step down due to the extra tension on the neck.
Awesome
Directly to the point , very precise. 🙏
Good idea to the viewers it's great on a 12 string guitar sounds great, bit different on 6 string
The way I think about chords I would call that a Eminor7 chord. And see it as the second chord to D. Like a vamp between the I and ii chords.
Great video. Great shirts 😃
Thanks, to one of my biggest fans! ❤
Good job!
I think that "chord" (using 1st 4 strings) is an Em7 (inverted). But what do I know? We just call it doin' a thingy with your fingers.
Keep up the great work 👏👏
Hello Guitar Father, Thank you for all the information and I Subscribed last week to your Channel, Great information on Rock.Guitar, ❤😊 Thumbs up Great Lesson.
monkey man is c# capo2. got tuned down for mick to sing in the studio. hence, keef just removes the capo live. maybe keith tracked it in B and it was all ready for vocals, then mick said no way! regardless the d shape is the only way i have found in 4 decades of playing and loving the stones to get it to sound right.
I hope you are going to make a video Lesson.
As noted below, you are just playing Em7 into D. Chord tones are pretty much everywhere and you don''t have to play all 6 strings.
yeah, maybe Em7/D? D in the root, top three strings are the root b3 and b7 of Em (and as I recall from music theory, the fifth can be "implied"). But yeah, I prefer "doing' a thingy' like the previous poster said :)
NEED MORE VIDEOS
Helpful to add guitar tablature
The simpliest the better
Yeah, it's hard to hear details from Led songs, as there is 5 guitars, a 12-string, 3 mandolins, a harpsicord, elephant with tuba in his ass and 8 legal actions against anyone who played in the keys of A, C, D, E, F, G or H.
Cheers from Finland, love your lessons!
👍🏼🎸,,i just got done jamming for 2 hrs,,and i watch this..ahh wth,,turn the Amp back on✌🏼
