It takes a village (and sometimes a lion) | Joseph Koyie | TEDxColumbiaSIPA

- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In one moment your life can change. What was a near brush with death turned into the most important moment of Joseph's life. It not only changed his life. It changed his family's, his community's and quite possibly the entire future of the Maasai people and others in similar remote areas.
Growing up as a Maasai in Kenya, Joseph Koyie was almost killed by a lion. This proved to be a pivotal moment in his life. He was the first of his generation to get educated and get a job. Joseph went on to be named the best guide in all of Kenya in 2012 for his work with Sanctuary Olonana in the Masai Mara. His initial desire to send his own kids to school evolved into another life changing role as Country Director of Under the Acacia, master-mining a game-changing sustainable community development model in Loita that now serves 150,000 of his tribe.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I am all for education but if it's at the expense of traditional education that for generations had kept the tribe together is it worth it? Western education is one of the key factor why Africa is still colonised today. Majority of the cruel dictators got a Western education. There has to be a balance between tradition and Western way of thinking! No more telling us Columbus discover anything!
Great am also in swiss stady and work.i love masai as the best African image ever,we African have still responsability to look buck to our people, but the qeusyion is (why Africa know?????).
Beautiful custom, I really like it
MAASAI PEOPLE.
I hope your smart enough to teach them their Ancient culture along with modern knowledge please I know how far behind you are. As far as needs but there’s a lot wrong with modern western society please stay connect to the ancestors
I agree 100%. A person is vulnerable and rudderless without knowledge of their people and their ways. "The purpose of education is to perpetuate the culture." Dr. Amos Wilson, the late great African American scholar warrior. I do believe also, there is good as well as room for improvement and evolution in every culture. Violence, oppression and domination whether from the west or your own culture is wrong. For example violence against women is wrong and should be outlawed. FGM is oppressive and harmful and needs to be stopped and outlawed.
Great Video! Very inspiring!

This is something good, nice storytelling and inspired about this.
Though this typically a common story sold to the "Western" countries, idk why, it's been like for years. Donor money? Kenya is sold the same way out there.
Yeap!!.. It's a way of colonizing us in the modern day. Making us dependent on donor money. And aid.... They do this, so that they can also receive donations in the name of helping Africa. It's all a scam
If you love reading, try reading a book called "how the European underdeveloped Africa" by Walter Rodney. It's very eye opening on such matters
@@positivevybes247 thanks I'll check.

No only a tribe called maasai people.
@@maggiewatkins8631 Yes. And we live in huts and play with pet lions. Sometimes they eat us but since every family has over 10 kids, there's always enough of us to carry on.
@@maggiewatkins8631 Sorry that was meant for Irene the troll.
