I saw my doctor last week, first visit for 3 months. Last time I saw him I stepped on his scales and hit 112 kg which is 12 to 15 kgs too much. He noticed that I had dropped a good bit and so we checked it out and I had dropped bang on 10kgs or about 23lbs.
I told him I had gone Keto in combination with eating only once a day (plus resuming weight training and daily walking) and he was thrilled to see it as he is an advocate of both Keto and IF and he was pleased to see my blood pressure back to 120/75 where it always used to be before I let myself creep up the scale.
Apart from this, the muscle and joint pain I had been experiencing has gone and I have way more energy too. Another few kilos and I will be able to see the athlete that I used to be!
As I am no longer eating carbs my insulin is remaining low and steady and I am not suffering hunger from one meal to the next as there is no spike and drop in insulin to send hunger signals.
Thank you Dr Jason Fung for your wonderful channel

I kind of lost my appetite for having potatoes on my plate as a part of the meal. I rather have cauliflowers, green beands, leeks.. and salad. But what i do is having something sweet every day. Not with artificial sweetener, something normal, but not much. Tiny bowl of icecream, or spoon of icecream in my coffee, banana, peaches, dark chocolate.. basically anything but not much. I justify it to myself like i saved those carbs from bread, pasta, potatoes, to have this treats :-) Maybe im not loosing weight that fast but definitely changed my eating habits and the amount of food i eat. Obesity is, for most people, a two part problem. Constant Insulin spikes due to meal frequency, and sharp insulin spikes due to excessive sugar. That’s why so many people who have crazy results got them with keto AND fasting. Each attacks their respective problem. Fast for a few days, break your fast with keto for a few days. Rinse and repeat and you will quickly reverse a lifetime’s worth of poor dietary decisions. It’s the combination that is so powerful, in my opinion.

I have never had a doctor, nor do I current have health insurance. When I was in my 20’s and 30’s, I was relatively lean because I rode a bicycle hundreds of miles a week. Fast forward to this year with my sedentary life and my weight had gotten up to about 235 pounds on my 5’6-7” frame. My mother has had diabetes for years, and I was not feeling great. So in late May one day I decided not to eat. Then I did not eat a second day. Then I started to learn as much about fasting and the ketogenic diet here on UA-cam. I ended the fast 36 days later, and now I am doing keto OMAD. I am now down over 40 pounds, my blood pressure is way down as well. Hoping to be down to my youthful weight by the time my 60th rolls around in November. With this man’s advice and motivation, I have no doubt I can do it. Thank you Dr. Fung.

I've been doing intermittent fasting for several years, mainly for its autophagy benefits. (I'm 72 and don't have a weight problem.)
I first learned about autophagy from Valter Longo's videos and reading about the work of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi.
Bottom line: fasting may have health benefits (via autophagy) that go beyond curing diabetes, critically important as that is.
Longer-term fasting also triggers autophagy, which "cleanses" your body at the cellular level.

IF, keto and walking have let me shed 58 lbs in the last 4 months. At age 56, I worried it was too late. A few weeks OMAD and then a few weeks ADF, and repeat. Keeping carbs under 20g on eating days, usually under 10g. BP has also dropped from 160/95 to 105/70 and HbA1c has dropped from 5.6 to 4.7. Still 100 lbs to go, but very happy with IF and keto.

Today is my first day and I’m a bit scared if I’m honest. I’m 58, post menopause and obese. My joints ache, my skin is awful and I’m always out of breath.
I’ve decided to try 18:6 for the first week to see if that’s a good fit.
Question: do I do the same thing every day or do I mix it up with other things such as OMAD?

    • @kirkellis4329
      @kirkellis4329 2 роки тому +9

@@kaycee625 I think you should take it in stages. Without the right food, it would take sheer willpower to go straight to 18:6 and you might give up in a few days.
First, realize that obesity, joint pain and skin issues are classic signs of insulin resistance and inflammation caused by a high carbohydrate diet and lack of regular exercise. So ... remove all sugar, grains, bread, potatoes and processed foods from your diet. Eat only meat and leafy green vegetables, and DON'T cut back on salt. No fruit, no juice, no milk, just water or club soda or coffee/tea without sweeteners to drink (heavy cream is OK but milk is not). Don't be afraid of fatty meat and butter, but throw away any oils and margarine other than olive oil, avocado oil or coconut oil. You need more fat in your diet to curb your hunger and replace the calories you don't get from carbs.
You may feel crummy for a few days to a week as your body adjusts to using fat for energy instead of carbs. Eat more salt if you get headaches or nausea.
Second, when you are done feeling crummy you should also notice that you aren't hungry in the morning anymore. If you are hungry, put a few rocks of himalayan salt on your tongue and just roll it around until it dissolves on its own. That will take 15 minutes, distracting you from hunger pangs and the hunger pangs will be gone afterwards.
Third, you are ready for a regular schedule of 18:6 -- basically, skipping breakfast, eating lunch at noon and dinner finishing by 6PM. Don't snack in between meals or after dinner. Water and salt only, black coffee or tea but no cream or sweetener outside mealtimes. You'll probably have lost 10 lbs water weight by now.
Fourth, start walking every day if you don't already. Whatever you have been doing, add 15 minutes more per day of walking. Do that for a week, then go to 20 minutes per day. After two weeks of walking and 18:6 eating just meat and veg and drinking non-caloric and non-sweetened drinks, you may find that you aren't really hungry at lunch. Don't eat just because it is "time" to eat. If you get hungry between lunchtime and dinnertime, do the himalayan salt trick and wait until dinnertime to eat.
That would be my suggested approach to getting to OMAD in 3-4 weeks. Continue extending your walking time each week, careful not to injure yourself, until you are walking 20-30 minutes at a time and two to three times per day.
Fifth, do OMAD for four weeks before attempting ADF and only do ADF for one week before returning to OMAD. For ADF, go back to eating a small meal at noon and another small meal at 6PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, eating nothing on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, just drinking water and eating pinches of salt. Back to OMAD on Sunday and continue OMAD.
This would get you 8 weeks into an IF and keto lifestyle and typically see you shed 30 lbs. Your skin, joints and breathing should improve along the way, and your energy level will improve when your body finally accepts fat is the only fuel it is going to get.
OMAD will seem normal and you can insert a week of ADF every so often, challenge yourself with a 72 hr fast once a month, etc.

Keep the faith! IF is definitely worth it. I was never really an over eater, but couldn’t lose weight to safe my soul. I took a strenuous step aerobics class & reshaped my body; lost several sizes; but didn’t lose a pound. I joined WW as a support friend & stuck with the diet, but I was into week 6-7 before losing a single pound. I ended up looking like I lost more than anyone else in the group. People would constantly ask me how much I had lost. I just used my Mona Lisa Smile & kept quiet.
With IF I lost 37 lbs pretty quickly, and have lost 13+ pounds since (more slowly.). My endocrinologist has never said “good job!” Instead he says things like I’m not sure that works, or I don’t think it’s healthy, even “Aren’t you hungry all the time?” He could use a few months of IF, maybe that’s why he’s not a fan… 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm really glad I did keto before attempting to fast. Getting off the refined carb train was key to being able to fast successfully. I've never been a breakfast person so that helped as well. It was kicking the carb cravings that was the hard part for me. I remember 20 years ago I only ate one meal most days, usually dinner, jogging 5 miles every morning, resistance training 3 days a week. I don't think I ever felt better than I did then. Not sure why I ever stopped. I do remember everyone giving me grief that I was starving myself. I guess I allowed myself to be convinced what I was doing was harmful to my health. I am so glad Dr. Fung and others are educating people that fasting isn't harmful and is, in fact, a healthier way to live. It would have been nice to have this as general knowledge 20 years ago. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Ballooned to 220 lbs at my heaviest, 203 in March 2020, currently 148, still have about 15-25 left to lose (5'4", almost 60 yo). It's been a slow process but not really difficult. The most important and impressive thing is how much better I feel, not just the weight loss but also my arthritic aches and pains are gone. Even 20 years ago at 130-135lbs I still had arthritic pain, stiffness, etc. It was something I figured would just be a part of life for the rest of my life. Ditching the sugar, flour, other refined carbs, potatoes and rice has greatly reduced the inflammation and no more pain. Who knew!?

@@curtisalex456 Honestly what worked best for me was cutting them out cold turkey. Trying to ease off didn't cut it. If you can gradually reduce them that would probably be better but a little sugar led me to wanting more sugar, a little pasta made me want another serving, you get the idea. If it wasn't in the house and I couldn't cook with it or use it, I couldn't eat it. Yes, I got the "keto flu" but I knew that was just my body adjusting to the lack of carbs and struggling to retrain itself to find an alternative source of fuel. After a few weeks I didn't miss the sugar, bread, pasta at all. Monk fruit is my favorite sweetener for coffee and tea because black coffee is just yuck to me 😂. Low carb wraps and tortillas have been a life saver, things I once ate on bread or buns I use the tortillas instead. One thing I did for the first three days was just eat protein, no carbs at all. Eggs, meat, butter and cheese, that was it. Kept these as a staple and started adding a few veggies like broccoli, asparagus, baby spinach, cabbage, cauliflower. After a few of weeks of that I began using the wraps and tortillas. Good luck on kicking the carbs! If this sugar, bread and pasta addict can do it I'm fairly certain anyone can. 😊

Indeed. Was my mistake. Too quickly, too impatiently, with too much willpower. I now am tuning the times i eat only with: mindful awareness. And see: i begin to fit my meals within a circadian rhythm that my body signals to me. I am listening.
It is important as i am neither diabetic nor overweighted. I want simply fitness back.
What has come naturally and effortless, is when i take the last meal of the day: between 16:00 - 1700. (Two meals a day.. the other meal 11:00).
Another signal of my body: no carb at all at the second meal but please a little bit at 11:00. (After 2 years of VLCHF diet i know that "very low" carb is too low for my biology)
What is interesting is that my body is too stressed by short fastings ( but with no reserves, not surprising) but it happens that I feel "Go for skipping a meal!" And then it is great, a kind of rest and cleansing.
      Awareness is better than willpower.

My Mom has a ton of health issues. Diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, reflux, pain all over and arthritis in her ankle. With this arthritis I got her, her "doctor" recommended to stiffening the joint. She was so afraird that finally she started listening to me and startet a Low Carb diet and a fasting window of 12, then 14h.
Now (after only 6 months) she is off a lot of her medications, loses weight and her ankle gets better. And now she has the energy and want's to go to 16h fasting window. I am so proud of her.

Makes me think things like slimfast and weight watchers are just hyped up money making fads that don't really work. With IF, for the last 4 weeks I've only eaten once a day and lost 25lbs. Very simple, cheap and easy. Weight training a few days a week, walking everyday. No muscle loss. Very impressed with this method of weight loss at 52years of age. Wish I'd done this years ago.

Thanks Dr Fung. You’ve been an inspiration to me. My weight was creeping up in my late 40s. Was getting into the 180s. My ideal weight (I’m male , 5’10”), which I’m at now, is about 160. My shirts were getting tighter and belly getting bigger, and I hated it. I learned about IF and started daily 8/16 fasting and continued every day for a year. I also changed my diet to a Mediterranean type with loads of veggies, fruit, pulses, nuts. The extra weight melted away in the first few months. I didn’t have a scale, didn’t really worry about how fast I was losing weight since I knew I was on a healthy path. After one year, I switched to three meals a day - breakfast, lunch, and dinner with no snacking. Same healthy diet with lots of veggies of all colors. My chronic pain and arthritis is almost gone and I feel much better mentally. I’m actually eating a little less than when I was fasting per se.
To stay motivated, I think about human evolution, about the foods that were available during our development as a species and shaped our dna. I eat the whole plant foods we are made to eat. In this light, the idea that I should have a bowl of ice cream most evenings seems crazy.
I realize this isn’t as impressive as those people who have lost much more. But I say my health headed in the wrong direction and knew I would become like relatives of mine who never got on the right track. It’s been 2.5 years since I started all this and my weight is the healthiest possible, I love my diet, and I hope others don’t have to be obese before they start a healthy lifestyle.

I'm recovering from binge eating disorder & as part of the treatment programme I'm taking part in, we're not actually allowed to "diet" But I'm desperately overweight. So i spoke with my therapist & she's given me the ok to carry on with my intermittent fasting. For me, it's about mindset & in my head intermittent fasting gives me just enough level of control that I need, but I don't find it restrictive like other diets. I can eat healthy & still eat pretty much what I want. But that time restriction, for me, is so much easier to achieve than a food restriction. Besides, I'm basically fasting while I'm sleeping so for me it's working perfectly. Another thing, fasting gives me something that I've never had with any other "diet" & that's clarity of mind. I'm calmer emotionally, I have more energy & I'm not starving & I'm not obsessing about food. Less likelihood of my relapsing into a binge again

The best part of IF is flexibility. I've lost about 80 lbs mostly by eating out. I'm not hard on myself since I know I have the will power to do fasting for 5 days easily if I want to. I can eat McDonald's and still make progress by making some slight adjustments like ordering 2 double cheeseburgers and make it into a 4 patty cheeseburger. That'll keep well fed until the next day and still make progress.
