Thanks man, great job with the flow of the problem... Great mechanic work, keep it up!
Awesome video, saved me from having to guess what was bad. Thank you!!
Thats awesome..glad it was helpful🙂
I'm having the same problem. Thank you so much for helping me.
Very good video i like your knowledge of exact test points
Fantastic video! Thanks.
Thank you🙂
Question
Car shuts off after it's warmed up. I replaced the ICM and coil pack assembly and fuel pressure regulator.
Disconnected battery. Drove 20 minutes and check light comes on. Code is ICM again.
What could cause the ICM to keep coming up? I have 3 ICM that check good according to this video and coil packs.
Any help is appreciated.
2004 chevy cavalier ecotec 180k miles
I had a 2006 Chevy cobalt that started shaking when I come to a stop.Since I had tha same issue about 3 years ago and I fixed it by replacing the whole electrical panel that attaches to ingnition coil. This time round, that part seemed very new so I thought.I ended up getting a code reading at Auto advance that read
1.Cylinder 3 misfire
2. Low 02 sensor on bank 2
3. possible fuel leak
So I started by personally changing Spark plugs,Both O2 sensors, a whole can of techo fluid,a new Ignition coil but the problem still existed.I changed the spark plug boots but nothing happened. My last bullet was changing the same panel I had changed 3 years ago.Went back to the shop bought a new part ( control module) that attaches to ignition coil changed it in less than 20 minutes and the problem was solved. So dont under- estimate that the part is good because it look new.Go back to the basics of fix exactly what was wrong the last time.Hope I helped someone
Yes, very true...glad u were able to get it fixed
how many miles was it when you had that done .
You just described the exact problem my wife’s commuter car had! I’m going to Autozone now to buy an ICM! Hopefully you just saved me a trip to the mechanic!
I have only one cylinder misfire according to the OBD error codes. Is it right to think that the coil pack must be good since each coil works two cylinders? Could a bad Ignition Control Module cause a misfire in only one cylinder? It is cylinder 3 and I also get P0106 Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Range/Performance.
Ur other code might be an issue with the map sensor which is located just above the throttle body which youll have to remove the air box above it...yea the coil going bad usually affects 2 cylinders..the misfire could be a bad module..but could also be a bad spark plug too..even a bad or dirty injector
How much resistance should there be if the ignition coil pack is good? The one I have here is reading 0.6 ohms on each.
Specs on these are pretty spotty, one manual says a good coil should read .6 to .81...while other says .6 or below is bad
My Chevy Cobalt 06 Heater keeps going out the bcm3 fuse keeps blowing even after changing the HVAC relay
Thank you for the informative film. When you attached a new Ignition control module, where did you lubricate it? I've read - all female connectors on the module (which are 2), but some people lubricate the back of the module and don't put any of Silicon Heat Compound into connectors. And how much you put, if you could tell. Thank you again.
You wanna lubricate the rubber seals, usually the ignition module comes with a lil pack of grease this keeps out any moisture or dirt from the electrical connection...u wanna avoid getting it on the contacts, since its non conductive it can cause a bad connection
@@backyardchevy328 Thank you for the quick replay. I ordered one fm Amazon, there is no pack with the lubricant there. On another set they give a pack on which it reads - put into connectors. Means it is a conductive lubricant they send. In my old module, on the smaller connector there is some grease, very little, kind of oily if you touch it. There was also a blob of some greyish grease sitting in the coil puck compartment for the module below the second connector. I didn't know at that time what it is and removed it. What kind of grease it can be? Or you just put Silicon compound on the back and that's it, nothing into connectors?
@@olenaerhardt7725 you just have to make sure which grease u use..the one that comes with the ac delco ignition modules is a lubriplate ds-es its meant to go on those connections..and those u do put on the female ends of the connectors..but some use dielectric grease and those u just put on rubber seals..theres some other modules that have a heat lubricant that goes under module but that doesn't apply to the cobalt since it doesnt have a metal plate it sits on
@@backyardchevy328 But what and where you put on your car? I'm sorry I never mentioned that my car is also Chevrolet (2003 Cavalier), so I think it might be similar grease to use. The thing is that in many films on this subject people put Silicon Heat Compound on the back of the plate (on module) in the manner like they make a sandwich with butter, I've never saw a one placing any compound into the connectors (how it is advised on the pack of the lubricant for ACDelco 19300922 GM Original Equipment Ignition Control Module (on Amazon)). You won't put much into those connectors, so will it absorb the sufficient amount of heat? Now I'm thinking maybe that blob of grease (diameter ~1/3") I removed was there left on purpose by the manufacture to absorb more heat? I ordered 2 types of heat sink compounds (conductive and dielectric) and try to do more research on this matter. Thank you for your attention to my question.
@@olenaerhardt7725 yea the heat compound is meant for different types of ignition modules not like that model..but u would smear a lil on the underside of the module the metal plate on underside of it and spread it on so it keeps the module from getting so hot..but this module isnt that type...if u use the appropriate grease that comes with the ac delco module...u wipe a lil on each of the female contact points on the adapter piece that comes with the ignition module doesnt need much...but if ur using dielectric grease just a light coat around the rubber seals to keep any moisture out..in my video all i used was dielectric grease on the rubber seals and has worked fine since
Thank you
Thank you for the support🙂
Hey there! In order to change out just the ICM, do I need to disconnect my battery before doing so? Also, do I need to remove the coil pack before changing the ICM as well? I just want to solely change out the ICM. Thank you!
Hello..no u can replace it while the coil pack is still installed and no you dont have to disconnect the battery its just always safer in case someone leaves a key on or a tool falls and hits on say the starter and it touches ground causing a spark..but its just a safety thing.
Backyard Chevy thank you!!!
@@clayton311553 always glad to help🙂 thank you for the support
New question. Did you apply dielectric grease to the ICM? And if so, exactly where did you add the grease? Is it needed? My new ICM came with a packet of dielectric grease.
@@clayton311553 its meant to be used on the rubber seal of the electrical connections to help keep any moisture out, just a light coat to avoid getting it on the electrical contacts
Hey, just wanted to point out that Amazon says that the Ignition Coil Assembly you have linked does not fit on a 2006 chevy cobalt.
Thank you:) i did double check and it is the proper one...even rockauto has that same part number for the ac delco brand..but not sure why it says it doesnt fit...heres the standard motor brand amzn.to/38IrbJf
@@backyardchevy328 Oh, not the first link, the second link. The one that goes to the coil. The Spectra Premium C-765 Ignition Coil, Amazon says it doesn't fit that model.
@@TheFoxern thats so odd...none of the ones meant for that car say they fit..even other brands
Thanks for the great video. I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L Ecotec with this same coil pack/ICM combo. I am getting random misfire code P0300. Since I replaced this coil pack about 5-6 years ago, I thought it may be going bad again. However, when I put a new coil pack in, it won't start at all. Put the original coil pack back in, starts fine (although runs rough when cold). I have tried (4) several brand coil packs, and they all do not work at all. Only the original allows the engine to start. One of the new coil packs also came with new boots, didn't make a difference. I can't imagine ALL the new coil packs are actually bad. I have also replaced the ICM, but it did not help at all. Any ideas on what would cause multiple new coil packs to not work at all?
Any chance ur using dielectric grease on the connectors? Or not using the adapter for the ignition module to coil
@@backyardchevy328 I am not using any dielectric grease on the connector (although the new ones did seems to have some kind of grease pre-applied to the female connector on the coil packs. By 'adapter' do you mean the rubber boots with the metal spring spacer inside them? if so, then yes.
@@darrendexter6125 theres like a plastic connector adapter that u slide into the ignition module and it also slides into the coils on the other end
@@backyardchevy328 That was what I was missing, thank you. So, the new coil pack works, but did not solve my issue. Will keep working on it.
@@darrendexter6125 and u said u replaced the ignition control module as well?
I need your help,
My car is having random misfires (P0300), I replaced the entire ignition control module along with the spark plugs. I also cleaned the maf but it didnt make a difference. The car drove just fine yesterday. It happened over night. What should I do in thus case? Also, subscribed! Thank you!
have u tested the ignition coils? any chance u have a scanner that shows the misfire counter? if so usually the coil when it starts to go bad itll affect 2 cylinders at the same time, so the misfire counter will show 2 cylinders with misfire counts on em...if the ignition coil checks out fine..id check the compression to make sure the internal portion of engine is ok..then id probably test the fuel pressure or check the injectors...i have another video on my video list of things to check if u have a misfire.
@@backyardchevy328 so I bought the ignition coils as well with the new control module. Even then the misfires are carrying on like before. I check the injectors and compression. Is there any possibility that the crank position sensor is bad?
@@enayetkhan9397 usually a bad crank sensor will cause starting issues or itll make ur car shut off randomly...could be a dirty throttle body or dirty maf sensor..vacuum leak somewhere.
@@backyardchevy328 so turns out, there was a small plastic piece that somehow got in between the intake (cyl 4) valve and the head. It was forcing the valve to remain open. The rocker arm fell off too. I was able to remove it, the car is driving fine again. There was nothing wrong with the ignition system. 200 dollars down the drain. Thank you for all the information though!
@@enayetkhan9397 wow thats a unique one...the compression test should of caught the no compression on that cylinder
Hey I have been having the same problem with a random missfire. I replaced both the spark plugs and the coil pack. It still has the same miss. I haven’t yet replaced the ignition module like you did at the end.
Yea normally when the coil goes bad itll run really bad since it affects 2 cylinders..so a random misfire is more affected by the ignition module
@@backyardchevy328 okay I have one coming Thursday hopefully that will fix it. Thanks
@@caleleppert7498 was that a fix? I have the same problem. Pls reach back out
@@Ohshiitsdatboi it had a bad injector and fuel line had a pin hole and lost pressure
@@caleleppert7498 how did you find out which was the bad injector
Hi, is it possible that if we have a bad coil car will die out. My saturn ion 2005 is giving trouble, intially i mean at 192000km it used to have a gap in firing the units like its trying to die out so after running it for 8000km it has started this problem like sometime it will be no cranking, sometime it dies out right after the engine is started and sometime in the middle of driving. Does anyone have a solution? I did clean ecm connector harness pins with rust remover but same issue continues.
Any check engine light/codes? Thats kinda similar to symptoms this cobalt i worked on had..and it was a problem with the ignition module...usually when its a coil itll have misfires in only 2 cylinders..but itll run bad the whole time when a coil goes out.
@@backyardchevy328 ok ok
Check engine light is on for a long time. When the engine dies, and i try to start then a car symbol with a lock come and engine does not take self and i have to wait in between 2 to 5min.
@@rasheed4585 oh ok thats a passlock light..thats a totally different problem..itll turn on for a split second shut off triggering the light.. and thats all passlock anti theft normally an issue with key/lock cylinder.....so when u leave the key on til the light comes off it resets it..then itll run...til it happens again
@@backyardchevy328 yes i ll check. Thanks
@@backyardchevy328 Hi Just a feed back for you all others. This week I visited a GMC dealer and the guy checked the computer thoroughly for the codes and all. He reset the car computer and the problem is gone. Before taking the car to service centre i disconnected the electrical connection to electronic throttle body, the idea was to disconnect and check that by removing which connection/sensor the engine is shutting down (Reduced power with a check engine sign and a downward arrow inside) so after removing the connection throttle body flap opened than it normal position and i was seeing it. I removed the throttle body, removed the side pinched cover with flat screw driver and tried to adjust the flap to its original position. GM has not given any provision to adjust it, so fitted the body back. The result was increased rpm at idle which was around 2000 to 2500. So the service centre adjusted that to normal as well.
I was advised that the reduced power was may be due to throttle body wrong values as it was getting hot so better to change it. I did not go for that bcoz it was 400 bucks plus labour.
But my good luck the original problem was solved. I was told that the problem will come back. Taking the hint of throtlle body overheating, the first thing i did was to seal the cover facing with high temperature silicon which luckily i had in the car. So i did the work before driving it back to home.
If there oil on the boot and plug, just one of them. Would replacing the boots make any difference?
That would be an issue with the spark plug tube seals..youll wanna replace the valve cover gasket including the seals that go around the spark plug holes
I know this is an old video, but I have a misfire on cylinder two and I recently bought the ignition coils but not the silver part on the side, is that necessary for the replacement to work or can I just do the coils, I tried replacing them and my car would crank but not start, I put the original coils in and it started, does anyone know what I can do?
Well if u only have a misfire on one cylinder it may not be due to the coils..cause each coil powers 2 cylinders..so normally when a coil goes bad itll affect those 2 cylinders at the same time..but when the ignition module does go bad on this model..it can affect a specific cylinder or even all the cylinders
@@backyardchevy328 Thank you so much for responding, I appreciate you taking the time to reply! Awesome video btw!
@@StoicOwl808 anytime🙂👍 thank you
Did it throw a DTC for p2101? Or what dtc got thrown? And did it put the car in "limp" mode and show reduced engine power?
No, this one just got a misfire code p0300... but a p2101 code would put the car in limp mode since it is an issue with the throttle body and the engines acceleration
@@backyardchevy328 hmmm. I'm not getting that code. But I'm getting misfires. The throttle body seems to be working fine I did clean it up a little bit without taking it off the car. Any idea what it could be or why not getting a misfire code if I'm getting misfires?
@@nosrednac8948 does the check engine light come on when u turn the key to the on position? Is it just a random misfire like not constant? If not misfiring enough it may not trigger the code
@@backyardchevy328 it's a constant misfire it's been happening for about 24 . Car has been in limp mode ever since
@@nosrednac8948 oh ok...does it feel like its a single cylinder or 2? Normally when its an issue with a coil itll misfire on 2 cylinders since one coil runs two..unless its a newer model with the individual coils..besides that it could be the ignition module or the basics like spark plugs..injector..etc.
I got a p0300 show up today. It started randomly misfiring only above 60mph, then a week later it started hesitating at red lights.
Have u checked ur spark plugs to see the condition of em? If thats ok usually a coil when it begins to go bad..begins to misfire under load..but for those when they fail they cause misfires on 2 cylinders since one coil runs 2 cylinders and that would be very noticeable.
If you replace ICM don't forget the little connector adapter or it won't start
Yea definitely🙂
@Jayayee Is it possible to buy just the connector adapter
Wow i didnt know danny trejo was a wrencher 🔥🔥🔥

@Backyard Chevy haha bro you seriously helped me out with this fix i didn't know it was this easy to fix the ignition coils and spark plugs
@@alexl9334 thats great! Glad to be able to help🙂
I removed my ignition coil module and found engine oil in the connector. Safe to assume this is what is causing my misfire?
Yea it is possible its affecting the connection, but cant be sure, i would actually think it would affect it even turning on with oil in connector
It turns on. But the oil is in the coil pack as well I'm pretty sure. I dunno how it got in there. I mean I did just replace the valve cover and did find a cracked spark plug seal. But I'm still getting the misfire. Plugs are good. And I cleaned the boots and everything with brake cleaner. The first thing I checked when i got this problem was the plugs and the boot and plug were dripping with oil. But evidently there's still another issue somewhere. There module itself is putting out voltage.
Anyways I cleaned everything I could get to and used dielectric grease on the ICM. I haven't reset the codes to see if they come back but I have a feeling they're still going to. It's all running rough.
This is for a 2005 cavalier. Same coil pack and ICM.
Any other ideas on what to turn to? I have no experience with this car, I bought it cheap to get me around until my insurance claim is settled. My actual car got totaled.
@@slipknotpsycho5891 is it one cylinder misfire or 2?
@@backyardchevy328 it's p0300 now. It was p0303 I think. Same cylinder that had the broken seal. The car doesn't really have trouble running. It's just not running smooth. Never feels like it's about to stall.
@@slipknotpsycho5891 yea most likely only 1 cylinder misfiring then..have u removed the boot for the 3rd cylinder on the coil and cleaned that and the spring contact..it could be an intermittent misfire too where the ignition module can actually be the cause of that too..besides that u can test the injector to cancel that out..the compression to make sure the compression on the cylinder or cylinders is fine
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt. Code 0300. Replaced ignition coil pack OEM replaced ignition control module replaced spark plugs replaced fuel injectors replaced MAFS replaced O2 sensor upstream did drive cycles 90 miles or more. Light still on
Does it still feel shaky like its still misfiring? Have u tried leaving the battery disconnected for 30 mins to reset the computer manually?
Have to replace my ignition coils problem is nasty stuff
my O2S 1 is flickering between 750mV and 150mV. Could it be my O2 sensor? Just going through your list.
Yea thats normal..its alternating between rich and lean so its adjusting based off of it
@@backyardchevy328 Good to know, I've done most of the steps including checking compression which was good. I bought a multimeter which comes tomorrow to see if the Ignition coil or module is bad. My other concern is that there is oil or unburnt fuel coming out of the exhaust pipe. Not sure if its because of the spark not burning the fuel or i have a blown head gasket or something similar? Started to misfire bad while driving and shaking while at stops and throwing a p0300 and p0301 codes.
@@saucecakes normally when the coil is bad itll have 2 cylinders misfiring at once(like 1 and 4 or 2 and 3) since one coil powers two cylinders..hows ur spark plug on cylinder 1, is it soaked in fuel? If so then most likely an ignition problem which leans towards possible ignition module or spark plug problem
@@backyardchevy328 yes, spark plug on cylinder 1 was soaked in what I suspected was fuel on the thread portion and was the darkest plug despite being changed about a thousand miles ago.
