THE RINGS OF POWER 1x1 "A Shadow of the Past REACTION & REVIEW! | The Lord of The Rings
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 сер 2022
- Nearly 21 years after the release of the first Lord of the Rings movie directed by Peter Jackson, we are invited back to Middle Earth with Amazon Prime Video's latest offering "The Rings of Power". This epic takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and follows the adventures of Galadriel and Elrond as they try to stop Sauron (yeah...we kinda know how that goes lol). The show is beautiful to look at and we can't wait to see more. Good thing we don't have to wait long for the second episode! Perhaps there will be a Gandalf cameo? Who knows...fingers crossed!

Well... Galadriel is the one who once went "In place of a Dark Lord you would have a Queen! Not dark but beautiful and terrible as the Dawn! Treacherous as the Seas! Stronger than the foundations of the Earth! All shall love me and despair!"
So yeah... She can be intense and scary.
Stiill not as strong as Sauron though!
She was also the one who immediately afterwards said "I pass the test. I shall diminish and go into the West and remain Galadriel." Long before that, however, as a young elleth, she bore witness to the wars of Beleriand (just east of Middle-Earth over the Blue Mountains, and now sunken underneath the waves) and its drowning at the final War of Wrath, which saw the defeat of Morgoth Bauglir and his greatest armies, and ended the First Age and Beleriand itself. She bore witness to the fall of the Father of Dragons, Ancalagon the Black (the most enormous dragon anyone has ever conceived of, whose wingspan would shadow modern-day Manhattan Island from just over the Empire State Building.) and the breaking of Thangorodrim, Morgoth's fortress in Angband.
Thats her evil version whit ring
But not a spoiled teenager dummy!!! She isn't scary she is annoying.
I love how they always pronounce the "r" in Sauron
They almost say Thahulon
Same for Morgoth, with a amphasis on the TH
It's how it's supposed to be pronounced
Really? Sounds super pretentious, like the way people tried so hard to pronounce Gal Gadot’s ame and got it wrong..
Elves roll their "R's" like Mexicans
Watching this on my 75" 4K tv was an absolutely magical experience. They definitely got their money's worth when it came to the look of the show.
The writing tho, not so much.
They don t die by age, they are trullu immortal. They just can be killed
Can't even be killed, really. Their souls float back to Valinor and they get new bodies
Probably wouldn't end up sailing back to Middle Earth during this era, though
they can be killed they just don't die of ageing.
@@blackpanther6885 yeah, but they come back to Valinor
They can die of heart break/Sorrow or deadly wounds...
@@Zacheize yeah prime example is Finrod got a fresh body back home
Elves are essentially immortal. But they can die by being killed or they go tired of life and wish to die
Much of the initial production, including those sweeping aerial scenic shots, were filmed in New Zealand. They initially intended to do most, if not all of the shooting (including studio/sound stages) in New Zealand but production kept getting shut down due to COVID, so they moved to the UK to finish a lot of the sound stage work (I guess the UK wasn't as strict about the pandemic at the time). Not sure what the producers with decide going forward with future seasons. Some of those shots looked like they used several of the same locations from Peter Jackson's films.
Galadriel is related to Elrond. Her father (Finarfin) is the brother of Elron'd's great-great-grandfather (Fingolfin, who challenged Morgoth to single combat and died) Most of their kin died in the First Age, so they're most of the family either of them has at this point (all of Galadriel's siblings are dead, most of Elrond's ancestors are dead, and his parents are in space. No, really.). Galadriel's backstory was changed by Tolkien a LOT after he created her, but he established that as a kid, being the one girl among a bunch of boys, she basically learned the same skills as them - hunting, swimming, wrestling, etc. She becomes more of a sorceress after she gets one of the Elven Rings of Power and learns to use it. (Pippin in the Lord of the Rings is a Brandybuck; he is Frodo's cousin as Frodo's mom was a Brandybuck, IIRC. I think Pippin was related to Bilbo through his Mom and related through marriage to Frodo.)
So many reviewers saying they were bored by this episode, saying it was too slow paced. Maybe it's because I'm a middle aged man who reads very dry non-fiction books, not a young fanboy hopped up on caffeine and adderall, so I have the patience to watch a story unfold, but I wasn't bored in the least.
For me it isn't about boredome. Its about consistency, if you can't stop contradicting what you just established. Or what is already established in the world. Then it is badly written. No two ways about that.
Same. I wasn't bored either.
@@ramithair2846 you thought that about the first episodes? what scenes are you talking about?
for some reason I was more interested in Galadriel's plot line in the beginning than I am now
I'm now more interested in Elrond and the Supposed Maiar story lines than Galadriel's
If they hadn't included the Mayar in the hobbit predecessors story line I was most likely gonna start skipping those parts...
@@davidnobre5660 many instances. If you want a detailed review that breaks down all of it check out Shadiversity and KNIGHTS WATCH . ( same guy ). But essentially the worst points are when galadriel presents gil galad with evidence about sauron being still around and then he goes like.... Those fighters proved to us that the evil is no more or something like that. Well that's not what they did. Second worst point is galadriel jumoing into the sea. It is established that the sea between Aman and middle earth. We know that because it is mentioned in the simarillion it took the numenorean fleet 39 DAYS to almost reach Aman. Which is where galadriel jumped off. This is Effectively suicide. She is more likely to swim all that distance back than she is to spot anyone in that vast distance. And yet she apparently needs no food for .... months at least
Elves do not die. Their souls are forever tied to the fate of Arda (Earth). If their corporeal forms die, their spirits go to the Halls of Mandos, a limbo-like place where they unload all their emotional baggage and trauma and are rebound to new life. In a sense, it's like respawning in a video game. They can age in some visible ways. When the Fellowship meets Galadriel, they do notice that although she has the visage of a beautiful Elf maid, something about her eyes make her look ancient, and a little scary. Cirdan, the shipright, is SUPER old and is the only Elf we know about who has a beard. Weariness and trauma can also age them a bit. Although they are much stronger and durable than other races, they do suffer trauma. They have to learn to live with it though, cause they cannot truly die.
The thing I like with this channel is you don't seem to get caught up in all the internet nonsense about shows like this and She-Hulk and just give an honest opinion, seeing the good, bad and average unlike some who have decided something is bad and you know no matter what they think they've decided it's the worst thing ever and keep saying what their viewers want to hear.

Serious question, do we know if this is supposed to connect to the Jackson adaptations or is it meant to be its own separate entity based on what they could use from the appendices of lotr?
The visuals are so stunning for a TV show it really immerses you in this LOTR world truly, as far as the story itself it is definitely slow but then again it is just the FIRST episode of the show. it is definitely a decent start from the show. If people want to criticize the show they should do it after the first season is completely out.
bhai accha tha but ye zabardasti ki racially diversity kyon ghusane lage ab. makes no sense for strong independent black women to be in a series which sets in past while there is no diversity in future.

So first we couldn't dislike it until we had seen the show, now we can't dislike it until the end of the season. What's next? Until the show Is over? And after that? Until I have a grandson?
Wait until the season is over to have an opinion or criticism... But greenlight season 2 after only the first episode? Seems a bit dumb comparably.
@@richieene1042 Seriously, got a friend who's been deep online reading the criticism and people are flipping out because the hobbit accents are Irish, not 'proper British English.' I guess because Jackson's movies used largely British accents, for these imaginary races? Even so, this is thousands of years before those movies, accents can change in decades. So silly people thinking these should be following European standards, even if Tolkien may have LOOSELY based SOME ideas on European history.
Galadriel was very powerful, in fact I’d argue the way she killed the Snow Troll doesn’t even come close to how powerful she actually is
The problem isn't that she's OP
It's that her Elite band of Elves who are just as old are shown to be much inferior
And Galadriel was never a fighter in the books
Maybe she could fight, but she was no War commander like here
They could have made her badass without changing canon
Subbed to see the rest of this Journey with y'all down the line. I'm loving this series so far. Can't wait for episode 3.
I like this razor-sharp ferocity of Galadriel - this bold choice not to make her easily accessible to us seems carefully considered - on the one hand, the tone of this central character can be a constant reminder of the deadly cosmic stakes
- on the other hand, this detachment we feel from her can help keep the whole series within an epic register - epics are meant to be viewed from a distance - think of figures like Achilles, Arjuna, Rostam, Sita - we mere mortals aren’t meant to be on intimate terms w such characters
- and also, as Jaby says, this severity is consistent w Blanchett’s tone, but bringing a new angle to it - the more mortal characters can provide the easier identification point for us - I think this contrast is important here
32:00 - the “prologue” - the focus of this series is the Akallabeth, and apparently the Silmarillion itself is serving as the “prologue” - the previous First Age lasted almost 15,000 years, and the destruction of the Trees of Valinor I think happens within its final millennium
- the Second Age of the series “present” itself lasts about 3,500 years - I don’t know how far the series will compress this timespan for the sake of dramatic momentum
26:00 - your surprise that Galadriel has warrior skills - but why wouldn’t she? We saw Elrond and Arwen in action in LOTR, in Fellowship - even though we usually encounter them in civilian “repose”
- I feel they’ve long established this premise of how lethal they all are, even physically - the surprise here is like Vader’s moment in Rogue One - we all realized how rarely we’d actually seen him in action
Achara 23:00 - “and are those Hobbitses?”
Samwise response - “Can’t you hear yourself? Don’t you know who you sound like?” lol
Bronwyn went with Arondir to Horn because she's the town healer. That's why the old man bought the sick cow to her.
I don't get the negativity of the show. Its slow in the beginning sure but I understood why. I actually am hooked in.
Achara : Ohh...ohh there was a hand, and it moved !
Jaby : Yaa, that's what hands do
😂😂😂
Galadriel is thousands of years old even at this point, a troll is akin to fighting a schoolyard bully when you are Mike Tyson. Now 5 trolls would likely give her some trouble. In D&D parlance, she is a 15th level fighter facing a Challenge Rating 5 threat.
Waiting another week for episode 3? I need to see more lol.
This episode might not be as truly amazing as the next one but this episode does a great job of world building. Not to mention it looks absolutely gorgeous! @@davidnobre5660 must be exhausting being so sarcastic all the time.
I didn't feel that the pacing was the issue in this episode... More like, the acting seems weird and funny especially the one who's portraying Galadriel. No facial emotions and weird expressions. Lmao!! Is this supposed to be based on books? I haven't read the books!
Read the Silmarillion, there's so much more to tell.
Promising start!
I think the guy from the sky is one of the blue wizards Alatar or pallando the arrived in middle earth in the second age…
No i think they arrived in the third age!
@@skaraturbo No. The blue wizards arrived in the 2nd age.
I had a similar moment upon seeing Galadriel as a warrior when she's so firmly entrenched in my head as this Elven sorceress queen, but then I remembered that Elrond himself was portrayed in the movies as a sort of warrior sorcerer, and that Gandalf, the quintessential wizard, has no problem wielding a sword and hacking orcs to bits both in the movies and books, which in turn reminded me of how they made Arwen more similar to her father and she fights the Nazgul with sword and spells in the movies instead of just being Aragaorn's Elven girlfriend, so I shouldn't really be bothered about Galadriel being a warrior when she was young, even if it's not exactly canon. Hell, it bothered me more to see Elrond and Galadriel be all chummy to the point where it kind of seems they may have a thing for each other, when she's actually his mother in law and Arwen's grandmother.
The big thing to remember is that magic in lotr is not the same as other fantasy. It's far more esoteric and is about granting boons or curses, bolstering or corrupting. Gandalf using his magic and the power of the ring he had came a cross as inspiring the men of Gondor and Rohan, and causing orcs to flee. But it's not flinging fire balls.
The thing is Galadriel being a warrior is actually pretty much canon. If you go look into the wider lore outside the lotr books there is actually quite a lot to support the idea that Galadriel was a warrior from the name her mother gave her 'Nerwen' = Man-maiden, descriptions of her athletic feats and Tolkien literally calling her as an Amazon, a term he specifically defines as meaning warrior women and shieldmaidens.
@@kimlarbiere2353 any Lore existing about Galadriel fighting refieres to the first age. This show isn't about that. (Also the depiction of Galadriel the Amazon doesn't apear on the material Amazon has the rights to, they aren't suposed to use It)
By the second age she's a wanderer looking for a kingdom of her own and Is married to Celeborn and they have a Daughter who eventualy Is married to Elrond.
So making her a warrior on this a bad idea.
@@davidllamas2192 yeh. The fact that we havent seen her husband yet shows that they are definitely changing her back story. I suspect they'll have her marriage to him happen in the second age. It's hard to say since it seems they're taking a lot of liberties with the lore. Not that that's necessarily bad, but it does mean the writers are taking a big risk with this.
In this show elves don't even look like elves in the movies
No she will be his future mother-in-law and also she’s kind of like a mother to him because she saved him during the battle
Just a side bite here on the galardrial not having a stratch comment. Believe it or not that is pretty much how all the " high elves" were after 3000 years of fighting Morgoth. They had to fight dragons the size of a mountain, gigantic wearwolves, tons of Balrogs etc. So yah an Itty bitty troll is literally nothing to the elves that lived through that time. It can even be said that, based on the crazy feats of her fellow elves, galadrial is actually kind of weak in comparison, since she didn't join in some of the earlier battles. Just for perspective I guess.

The pacing is in tune with novels. We're you have to think to get it.
I prefer storytelling like this
all the central character have the name with letter 'r', so they can pronounce it in a cool way, also character look dangerous with those name.
They managed to condense the entirety of the Years of the Trees and the First Age into just a few short minutes, when there was just SO much more to tell about the Years of the Trees and the First Age. Did they tell of the Silmarils and of the terrible Oath of Fëanor? The Kinslayings? Did they tell of the Battle-Under-Stars? The Battle of Unnumbered Tears? Did they tell of the Siege of Angband? The fall of Gondolin? Of Nargothrond? The Children of Húrin? The War of Wrath? They didn't even begin with the Ainulindalë, did they? The Creation Myth of Eru Ilúvatar? The Great Music that formed the Universe of Ëa?
They don't have the creative rights to any of that, sadly :( I think they're doing well with the restrictions that have been placed on them

The start has done something that all the prior movies & books never have for me, and that's make me care about LOTR world. I know the purists are going to hate it and they have their reasons, but so glad I ignored all that whining (+ put aside my prior boredom) too really give this a fair shot. Visuals are so immersive and shows they used that huge budget well. Galadriel is a compelling character for me personally, and I'm interested in all the character's paths going forward so far. Totally agree that this show needs to be viewed on as large a screen as you can get access to.
Are you serious? you didn't care about the world of Lotr and this is what did it?

"Are they just friends?"
Whatever Amazon try to make up their own story, but from Tolkien's true story they were never friends. Elrond was married to Celebrian, daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn, this makes Elrond the son-in-law and Galadriel his mother-in-law... This is the part where I stopped watching this series, then questioned about Celeborn and Celebrian whereabouts.
Sound like a loser😭
They were literally described as being ‘affectionate’, ‘respectful’, ‘close’, ‘comrades’, ‘colleagues’. They knew each other since the First Age. If that’s not a friendship, I don’t know what is. People like you will complain about everything even if it’s lore-accurate.
@@KajiVocals that's how you describe co worker....not friends. But sure people like you will argue on behalf of mega corporations bc....."cumsum...and get 🙄 excited for next thing".
@@algorithmicalychallenged.291 I assure you I am very critical of Amazon as a company (and their outright barbaric and inhumane treatment of their employees in particular). I just do not see the big issue here. Coming at this from a perspective of someone who is well-read on Tolkien. Both his Middle-Earth works and his other literature.
@@KajiVocals nope, in real middle earth Elrond would bow to her and not dare to even touch her....she is superior than elrond in many ways especially in second age!
Many were saying was that Sauron coming. Sauron is hiding so is already there. My guess is it's Gandalf but we won't know him as such by name for a few seasons. Its just not by chance he appears were the little folk are. Maybe he more or less guides them to a safe place from wolves later will be the Shire. I think if was Saruman or Sauron in the comet thing. I have seen episode 2 so it reaffirms my theory. It just seems like it effects there minds when first come from where ever the Maiar angels come from.
if it's Gandalf, why did the leaves of the tree rot when the meteor passed in the sky? Why did he break Nori's father's ankle? Why did he kill the fireflies?
@Anoushka S Well it's possible, but if it's Gandalf, why not say it's Gandalf? He already looks like Gandalf... And if they wanted a surprise reveal, they would have made him look different from Gandalf. Also Gandalf is not supposed to be in Middle Earth in the second age, and it's not like the hobbits who were supposed to be here but just never got noticed before the third age, Gandalf is specifically sent to Middle Earth AFTER the defeat of Sauron at the battle of the last alliance to stop him from returning.
I think it's misdirection, i think it's exactly like when, in a "whodunit" movie, you see a character tell the future victime "i hate you i wish you were dead", that means this character is not the murderer.
@@segments2156 Sauron we have already seen in the trailer the weird looking white-haired person. When Gandalf was sent back asn Gandalf the White he had memory issues. This here seems like he expected to have his abilities but really magic won't work quite yet like it should for his body on earth to be hurt. I think Sauron killed the 2 girls . he already was in middle earth but he does his best its hide. He is one of the 5 wizards for certain. Could be Saruman which be more tragic if he helped guide the hobbits to the shire to only scorch it.
@@Ringking-ws7bz No Sauron is not the character played by Bridie Sisson... she is a priestess of Morgoth.
That rumor has been debunked ages ago.
I’m very conflicted with this show cause it is done amazingly well but it’s only loosely falling the history Tolkien wrote cause Galadriel by this point was married and had a child and that third is elronds wife and as far what I’ve read it doesn’t specify if she was a warrior or not and Celebrimbor is actually the most important elf in the second age but we’ve barley seen him
So what? Just appreciate what is good and ignore what you don't like. The shadow of mordor games created a "spin-off" plot that has nothing to do with what is in the books, but it was still enjoyable to imagine a different storyline based on the known history of the books. Just learn to separate things, original VS adaptations. Because I'm sure you'll see many more adaptations in your lifetime, and some will be bad, so you better get used to it. Their existence doesn't detract in any way from the original work.
@@voidgods Maybe not, but it's a waste of potential. And it feels insulting that someone thinks they could tell the story better than Tolkien. His version is the only version.
@@voidgods shadow of mordor doesn't change what was written in tolkien's work. It expands on it after the fact. All the elements of the story are the same ( it takes place after the hobbit ). And the story in the books would be exactly the same whether the events happened or not. Just like the witcher games started after the books ended and don't change anything that happenned in the books. So your example is just fraud
@@ramithair2846 no adaptation changes anything about the source material. As far as I know the books are still there as they always were. Now people who complain about an adaptation are not only whiners, but also sound like kids that can't separate the original from the adaptations. They are different things and should be treated as such. Your theoretical perception of what makes a good or bad adaptation is subjective and selective.
Do you hate the movies for making the army of the dead arrive at pelennor to save the day in the most Deus ex machina way possible? I bet not, and I don't either, despite it changing a big part of the storyline - I'd rather have seen the knights of Dol Amroth instead, but it is what it is. Deal with it.
Now, Amazon is a greedy company as all others, but they couldn't get the rights to the Silmarillion, only to the LOTR books. So they had two options, either do nothing with those rights, since the main story was already explored, or try to stitch together what the appendices had, the best way they could. And I'm happy they did because at the very least I can see the locations which are very well done, the character designs which are very well done, the music is okay, and even some new additions I though were interesting, such as the green ad human settlements in the region soon to become Mordor - it makes sense from a realistic standpoint and engaging to see what Mordor could have been if it was not tainted.
So there is a lot to appreciate even if you don't like or agree with all the changes. People are just finding reasons to be either haters and/or racists and calling themselves "purists" even though a lot of events were changed or ommited from the LOTR and Hobbit movies, but I don't remember anyone complaining about that. I have 3 different LOTR tattoos and having a black elf or a woman dwarf without beard is honestly the least of my concerns. And anyone who disagrees is wrong. Bye!
@@voidgods you got really butthurt there buddy. Rings of power has some of the most beautiful set designs in any show. But that's to be expected, 60m$ per episode. The issue is not here. Nor is it about " not being truthfull to the source material" cuz most adaptations are not. Take the witcher for example. Really like the show yet they changed a lot of things.
The issue you just can't or don't want to see is in the show it self. The main character galadriel has a badly written arc. Her personality doesn't fit the perspective she would realistically have had as a 3000+ yo elf. The decisions made by gil galad are inconsistent with what was shown literally in the beginning of the episode. And his reasoning is that galadriel might cause the very thing she seeks to stop. Which also makes no sense because if sauron is there. Galadriel finding him or signs of his existence ( which she did but EVERYONE in the show, even Galadriel herself ignores) would somehow cause more harm than good?. And Galadriel, one of the wisest beings on middle eaeth. Decides to jump in a sea so large it took the numenorean fleet 39 days to "almost" cross, without food or any other realistic explanation . The story presented in the show itself is bad. There is many plotholes that they think will be covered up by the admittedly amazing look world they created. But no matter how beautiful it looks. It needs substance to support it. And as of now, the substance that supports it is made out of shit.
Galadriel has Sauron levels of power, she should defeat a Troll easily.
Not really close to Gandalf at most but not Sauron level!
@@skaraturbo Sauron levels of power (but still considerably weaker than him, just saying she is around there). Not even close to Sauron with the ring levels of power, though.
Trust me it's in NZ it looks like that
I feel that Galadriel being able to take down the troll so easily is explained by the fact that later on we’re told that this has been the complete focus of her life for hundreds of years. While I didn’t love that the rest of her troop struggled so much, but by this point we’ve also seen that they are exhausted, whereas her internal dedication/obsession is driving her ever forward, as well as the fact that we’re also shown that even as a child, if you pushed her buttons, Galadriel woke up choosing violence.
This completly contradicts the books... But ok
The high Elfs could easly beat big monsters some could even fight Balrogs!

Tolkien elves are immortal. Immune to sickess, time and weather. They can be killed or die of sorrow. Even when killed they respawn in Valinor. Luthien is only elf who truly died. Elves exist as long Arda (world) exist.
And you might say that Luthien did not truly die, she just choose the Gift of Men. And what the fate of Men is has still not been revealed; remember what the messengers of the Valar told the men of Numenor: "The love of Arda was planted in your hearts by Iluvatar, and He does not plant to no purpose. But what that purpose may be may not be revealed for many lives of Men, and to you it will be revealed, and not to the Valar".
