  • I show several ways to siphon and test out 6 different types of siphons (syphons) sold today.
Having a way to siphon gas in your vehicle can be very handy in a SHTF situation or if you are out of gas or want to share some gas with someone else. NOTE: MY TWITTER IS @Horsyguy

There was a news story here in Florida a few years ago, a man went to his RV and there was a siphon hose stuck in it with a big pile of puke on the ground, the hose was hanging out of the septic tank instead of the gas tank.

I forgot the name of it, but I liked the one with the metal fitting on one end that you have to jiggle up and down. Simple, one piece, not bulky, nothing to lose, packs away small enough. One could also use one of those to empty a fish tank if you're changing the water.
When you mentioned the name of that one, I paused the video and looked for it on Amazon. It's got good ratings and I saved it in my Wish List. One of these damn days I'd like to get my fish tank going and a simple siphon is key for that.

Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos trying to help and inform us and we really appreciate it Rick. Smokey's response to Batman was adorable. I was watching one of your older California videos and you had a smokey grey colored cat just like him walking around the horses then. Were any of those cats ever yours? Thanks again also for my pretty bad asthma attack caused from laughing so hard at the ladder falling video. I will ALWAYS reach for my inhaler at or before watching any of your videos from now on lol. That totally unexpected laugh factor is part of why we just enjoy your channels so much. Everything we learn keeps us coming back as well.

No, that was just a stable where Rick kept his horses, Buddy and Tanner. All the other critters there belonged to some one else. If he had a cat there, I'm sure he would have brought the cat along when he moved to Texas.
But shortly after Rick got to his new place, Smokey showed up.

Country wisdom. My grand dad had fuel delivered. He had barrels on an elevated rack. It was a long way to town. He had one for gas and one for diesel. Gas theft was a problem and he tried many things. What really worked was switching the labels. Putting five gallons of diesel into you car was a real wake up call to the thieves.

Years ago my friend's father bought a little 3 cylinder Chevy Sprint. He was all excited about the gas mileage they said it would get. It had an 8 gallon tank & we started taking 2 gallons out for the first few weeks. His father was very disappointed because he was coming nowhere near the claimed mileage. He was timing light & doing every little trick in the book trying to increase his mileage but he was still getting like high 30's (Chevrolet claimed high 40's city, low 50's highway.
After about a month of taking gas out, we left it alone & surprise surprise, his mileage went way up. My friend's father came to the conclusion that it was improving because the engine was breaking in. Of course, we started adding a gallon every week & he was getting 60+ mpg. lol He didn't find it as funny as we did. My friend actually got grounded for that.
We didn't even steal a drop. We replaced every drop we took out but his dad was pissed because he had put so much effort into tracking every mile & every gallon.
He did get an average for the 6 weeks or so that we were doing that but he was still pissed. lol I still think it's funny 30 years later. If I recall we got the idea from a movie & decided to pull that prank on his dad.

What ive done in the past is put two tubes in the gas tank. A short one for me to blow in and a longer one to go down to the receiving gas tank. Holding a rag or two around the gas tank hole helps keep enough pressure in the tank to force it out of the nonblow hose. After blowing, keep your thumb on the mouth end to maintain the forcing-out pressure in the tank.

Siphons are good, but it's easier to carry a cheap 12 volt fuel pump and hose. This allows you to do a fast vehicle to vehicle or vehicle to container transfer and leave the area quickly.
    It works good.

Also, if you have compressed air, you can just take your air nozzle and blow air at the end of the hose, perpendicular to the hose. That will create a venturi vacuum at the end of the hose, thus pulling fluid into the hose to get the flow started. That's what I do at work. Works pretty well.

  • @coquimonster31

Damn Rick, you're everywhere! 😂 But great vid. You answered all the questions I came on here to look for. Also I like the trick of throwing the whole hose and using your thumb to block air. Beats sucking on gas.

  • @roquri
    @roquri 7 років тому +1

You can take the free end of a hose and whirl it around, which will pull a vacuum in the line. The downside is when you get fluid flow, it slings crap everywhere.

The siphon at 4:40 with the red squeeze bulb has a screw cap the you open to let air in and stop the siphon. I have some that are still fine from the '90s, keep it out of the sun and it should last for a long time. I keep kerosene heaters for emergency heat if the power goes out. Use the siphon pumps to fill them.
I am pretty sure the filler nozzles for modern gas powered cars is 1 3/16 inches so your hose needs to be no bigger than that to fit in gas tanks.

One of the advantages of having a smaller hose, specifically if you intend to use it on another __CAR__. Most vehicles made after 2002 have anti-siphon plate in the fuel throat leading into the gas tank. If you have a small enough hose you can pass through the grate ... but... starting around 2005, manufacturers started using a "rollover" gate, aka a ball inside the feeder throat. These are VERY hard to siphon past, if not impossible. Best way around them... go straight to the source and cut into the tank, or if you can, into the fuel pump receptacle (often located under back seat or under trunk's trim.)

I love your method using a longer hose and holding the tip dragging it out that is awesome. Now this is not for stealing but i think if you're going to use this on vehicles salvaging a smart method is to cutn bottom of a funnel to hold initial security feature open then to bypass secondary security feature use larger hose push down till you hit the security stopper then pull back an inch then insert a quarter inch that goes inside of your larger tube and presto You are past both security features and there is also the battery powered siphons that I find very useful and clean You wanna get creative and you're looking to be Quick when you're out salvaging anyways all in all thank you very much for your tutorial You helped me out...

@@veronicafuentes022 Yeah, it has it. Most cars have had it since the late 90s. If you want to get at the gas you'll probably need to bypass the neck by removing or cutting the filler hose near the tank to siphon. I read somewhere that you might be able to use a small tube to bypass the mechanism in the filler neck (maybe a 1/4 inch tube) but I've never tried it and have my doubts to it working. you can soak hose in hot water, or put in microwave for 10 sec. at a time while
flipping it and rotating ! both methods work..

The Yellow and black pump does not work on gas There are 2 thin rubber gaskets That melt away if you use gas.. And like most cars and trucks you will need a good length of hose to reach the bottom of the tank..And hope there is no blocker

Hey Rick, what about getting gas with a siphon hose from a tank that has a stop valve or "y"., d.H.. pumping gas from a gas pump in a gas station no prob., but with a siphon hose can't get it in to the fuel tank. some type of valve does not allow the siphon house into the fuel.
