    I recently had the chance to sit down and talk about bass singing with Matt Davis of the Ball Brothers. Matt has also sang with Voices of Lee and has a music degree. It's always fun to hear from young guys who are singing bass and hear exactly what they suggest for other young guys who are starting out.

    I think it's important to note that to be a bass singer, you really have to be a bass singer. If your natural voice is high in register, you will struggle to drop the htz. Love your channel Matt.

    This is an interesting conversation that this channel has started. As someone currently studying vocal technique and pedagogy in university I can confirm that a lot of what is being discussed is fundamental to good technique. The forward resonance or placement that was talked about specifically in this video is one of the most important elements to good singing. This is actually what allows opera singers to project without the assistance of microphones and I know that opera was mentioned in the video. That forward resonance, referred to as ring, edge, twang, ping, etc. is actually an isolation and manipulation of the higher frequencies in the overtone series created while singing. Higher frequencies always carry farther which is why opera singers are able to fill large halls without the use of electronic amplification. I think there is some danger however in explaining the sensation of singing in the mask and trying to place the sound in those nasal cavities because technically speaking you should not be placing the actual sound in the nose/nasal cavities. It's purely a sensation, not actual sound. The nasal cavities are only a secondary resonating chamber that is used when singing on consonances such as "n" "m" and "ng" and well as other sounds in foreign languages. You guys obviously are singing correctly and there is nothing nasally about your sound, however this is not always the best way to explain good singing because often times that will cause the student to sing nasally. Nasal placement=good (because its a sensation, not actual sound) nasal singing=bad. Really digging this channel though, keep posting content!

    I'm not a singer, and if I was, I'd likely be a Baritone. However, Bass singing has been kind of an academic interest of mine for years now. After hearing about the mask technique and how saying words with an "n" sound in them can help you feel the placement, it makes a lot of sense now why, after having a cold, it's so uncomfortable to say words like "no" or "and" because the sound tries to resonate in those sinus passages when they're stuffed up. I think most people actually start to tap into this technique when speaking without even knowing it's used in singing.

    Nice vid man! it's inspiring to listen to bass singer at my age talking about his experience and advice. Idk if I take it right but u seemed to look down on other bass singing techniques @ 3:40. Well I have to say that music is diversity, every singing technique should be respected. Before u actually look deep into a certain technique, u shouldn't deny its value. Masked full voice, airy full voice, vocal fry, growl, subharmonics singing, mongolian throat singing (aka throat bass in beatbox world) ,subbass liproll and etc. All these techniques can hit let's say B1 by definition. They are just so different in texture and power. As long as they don't do damage to vocal health, u can't actually say which is bad or not. it's just a matter of fitting.
    In terms of gospel music, mask singing surely is the proper technique cuz it's got texture harmonizing with other voice parts / instruments and it's loud enough to be heard.
    In jazz music, Barry White used airy full voice and vocal fry saying lyrics @ around G1, making it like a sexy whisper to one's ear;
    In beatbox house/trap/edm music, beatboxers like Beatness used airy full voice, throat bass and subbass liproll to mimic the actual super low bassy sound;
    In acapella music, Tim foust/Geoff Castelluci used masked/airy full voice, subharmonics singing and growl in different musical pieces depending on the effect they want to achieve.
    All in all, I think there is no superior technique, they are like different weapons in a bass singer's arsenal. The more u master, the more easily should defeat the "enemy". Thanks again for the nice vid. Have a good day!
    p.s. if u have interest, explore the beatbox world. I used to think beatboxers merely mimic percussion sounds and musicality is hardly involved but I am totally wrong. They are really pushing the limits of human voice and always willing to learn and experiment. Lots of beatboxers has got range from the 1st - the 6th/7th octave which really surprised me. This community is so underrated!

    So I'm 17 and my voice on different days is able to hit lower notes then on others I cant hit thise notes. Is it like Matt was saying and I'm singing through the mask? Or am I doing something else wrong too?

      Isaac Adude do scales with a video on UA-cam and see how long you can go without straining.

    I’ve really worked hard on the mask technique without much success. I can hit a low B flat without using the mask. I would like to go a bit lower by using the mask but the practice just has not made a difference so far. Is it something that takes months or years to master?

    • @sasmadra
      @sasmadra 5 років тому

      You're probably placing your sound in the back of your mouth/throat and /that/ is how you're achieving your low notes.

    there are days when my voice is lower and others higher, there are days when I reach a powerful A1 and days that I do not reach, is this normal?
    please i need help
    PS: I'm 18 years old.

      Yes, this is normal. Your voice is going through transitions right now, at 18. Keep working with it and practicing, your voice will settle and become more consistent.
