  • NewsChannel 9 is sad to report the passing of longtime radio and television legend, Luther Masingill.
    Our partners at WDEF-FM confirmed Luther passed away Monday morning at the age of 92 after a brief illness.
    Luther was inducted into both the Tennessee and National Radio Halls of Fame and was the world's longest-running broadcaster, with 74 years on the radio.
    He is the only broadcaster to have been on the radio when both Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941 and when the World Trade Center was attacked during 911.
    A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Luther Masingill is survived by his wife, Mary, his son and daughter, a brother and two grandchildren.
    Funeral arrangements are pending.

Luther s partner of 20 years James Howard said: Luther is the reason I got into radio. He is my best friend and an inspiration to everyone who as ever listened. Announcing his passing is one of the hardest things I ve ever had to do in my career. We will continue his broadcast legacy and honor his memory.
