Interestingness of Patterns
-In data mining (DM), millions of data patterns are generated
-among all these patterns, how many are interesting, useful?
-only a small fraction would be of interest to any given user
This raises three questions
-What makes a pattern interesting?
if is it easily understood
if it is valid on new or test data
if it is potentially useful
-Can a DM system generate all of the interesting patterns?
refers to the completeness of a DM system
in reality, it is not possible for a DM system to generate all interesting patterns

-Can DM systems generate only interesting patterns?
refers to optimization of a DM system
generating only interesting patterns is challenging
if only interesting patterns are generated, it becomes easy and efficient for the user
(time is saved)
