    "They will chop you down just to count your rings" is my favorite line of any song or rap, ever.
    Basically, when you chop down a tree, you see a cross-section of its trunk, which is concentric circles or rings. Each ring represents a year. So counting the rings tells you how old the tree is.
    In the lyric, they're willing to destroy a beautiful thing, just to see how much cred it has.

      One of my favorites as well. Hard to rank them, but he has a line in 'Dorks' '...used to floss the albatross like Daddy Kane with a chain...'
      Which also is laced with imagery and deeper meaning about wearing your shortcomings and that which your bound with not just on your sleeve but proudly displayed.
      Another is on 'we're famous' with El-P om the bazooka tooth album where he (aes) says 'you brag about your 4 figured watch/ i rock a 99 cent wristband and still know the time when your record flops'... no extra meaning there but the line is hard as fuck

      @@erikgilson1687 Yeah, Aesop historically worked with producers like Blockhead, Tobacco, El-P, and Rob Sonic but he's always been dabbling in production, going all the way back to Float (2000). However, Skelethon, Impossible Kid and Spirit World Field Guide were produced entirely by him. He's definitely influenced by the producers he's worked with in the past and you can hear it in his choice of textures.

    Always here for Aesop Rock reactions. There are a lotta tracks I'm tempted to recommend, but for something that hasn't been reacted to a billion times, try Flashflood. From his Labor Days album, which for perspective, was released one week after the 9/11 attacks. Aes was 25 at the time, and by his own account, he 'went crazy' a month before that album was released. Had a complete breakdown. Dropped out of the big Def Jux promotional tour. It's Aes young and hungry and messed up and self medicating with pills and rapping to keep himself alive because it's all he has. Everyone reacts to Daylight, but Flashflood gets overlooked.

    • @doomtho42
      @doomtho42 2 роки тому +1

      Good call man, Flashflood was my favorite Aes track for many years - probably all the way through until Skelethon dropped. It also has my personal favorite bar that Aes has ever written (I’m not saying it’s his best or anywhere near it, but for whatever reason I just love it): “I told this cat the Earth was flat, he walked til his beard grew long enough to strangle himself for being stupid.”
      Also, this is random but every time I see the word Flashflood written like that (and any time I think of the song in general) I instantly hear Aes’ voice in my head - “In slipped rhythm. Fed a cycle bound by dilemma, debt, and vendetta …”

      Pigs has some of the best compound rhymes out of any song I've heard in my life:
      _Apple in his mouth, Maraschino eyes_
      _Party like the butcher boy's cleaver is alive_
      _I mosey into sixteen hours of smoke in the misty winter_
      _To see the county fair's blue ribbon winner as dinner_
      _Then dance until the sun has kissed your blisters in the morning_
      _As the misery was dormant and divvied in crispy portions_
      _Corporates want to lure him in and whore him_
      _Or does he whore the corparates to expand the more important forums for him_

    Glad you enjoyed Aesop bro, really hope you check out more. This is one of his more straightforward songs, others tend to be more cryptic. Once you start understanding how he writes, you realize how genius of a lyricist he can be. If I had recommendations it would be - Dorks, Pigs, or None Shall Pass. A personal favorite of mine is Pigs, where it covers the topic of corporate welfare and greedy businessmen taking from the working class.

    This is the song that got me into Aesop Rock. I heard some other stuff and was like "this is cool, no idea what he is talking about though". Then I heard this and it hit home hard. I figured if he wrote something so brutally honest I have to listen to his other stuff too. Fast forward to now I owning most of his stuff on vinyl. The more you listen to him, the more he makes sense. Even now there there is stuff he says I know means something, I just have not figured it out yet. He is totally worth not only hearing, but truly listening to. I hope you check out more of his tracks.

    This song was super simple for me, I was super into drawing and painting and was in college level art classes in highschool and gave it up, you're right about he's drawing and painting but he's also complaining about himself being a failed artist where he gave up painting and drawing even though he was gifted, "used to draw, hard to admit that i USED TO draw", most of the confusing stuff in this song for most people is just artistic jargon you may not pick up on if you weren't taught

  • @jamesoblivion
    @jamesoblivion 2 роки тому

    In his youth, Aes was a visual artist. He went...well, off to a school where it was all he could do, and was trained and observed by a capable few. In other words, he went to Boston University to study and train in the visual arts, acquiring a bachelor's degree. But when he committed himself full time to rapping, he put all his creative energy into that, and that meant no longer obsessively drawing and painting like he used to. Really, it's a song about looking back on something that used to be your entire world, that you don't really engage with anymore, and feeling a sense of loss.

  • @collinbeal
    @collinbeal 2 роки тому

    See, this is what I love about Aesop Rock. I've heard this song like 25 times, but it's only now occuring to me what the line "all heart, though we would've made cowardly kings" means, since you basically have to double double double back to understand it. All heart, but we couldn't be lion-hearted like King Richard the Lion-Heart, instead we're more like the cowardly lion from Wizard of Oz or King John I, who ruled in King Richard's stead while he was off doing a crusade. He wasn't fighting his battles, but instead terrorizing everyone around him until they all quit on him and forced him to bow to their demands, i.e. the Magna Carta. He's saying he had the courage to continue, but couldn't find it within himself, like the cowardly lion, and instead caved to societal pressure like King John I, becoming a tyrant to himself and everyone around him in the process due to the bitterness he felt from deferring his dreams.

    • @collinbeal
      @collinbeal 2 роки тому

      That's why he's being "chopped down". Basically, that fight in him began to slowly wear away within him with age, hence "count your rings". He tried to fight for his dreams, but the world cut him down because it didn't like his fight, and now that it's years later, he can only think about what could have been if he fought his own battles and been a warrior king like Richard the Lion-Heart instead of a coward like King John I.

    Great breakdown! Aes has a way of using big words, and I think that misses a lot of people when it’s crammed in so densely. ☝️ Also, it’s pronounced A-sawp, not to be confused w A$AP.

    Aesops another one that rhmesayers records got the claws into. They so badly want to stay underground that no artist gets a shot. Aes is brilliance and should be mainstream underground starting 20 years ago. Same with Busdriver, same with El-P (granted, RTJ does well), same with Sapient, same with Doom Tree and so so many. Keep on helping dig em up my man.

    Aes is the best man, anything and everything is gold.
    For recommendations, absolutely have to say 'none shall pass' is up there, also 'Klutz'. Skelethon is personally my favorite album but those two are good starts.

    Aesop will always be my favorite artist. Not every song hits for me, but there’s dozens on par or better than this one!

    You don't need to listen to more Aes....you need to listen to ALL the Aes...haha. Cool that you dug this. Everything Aes does is impeccable, but you really can't go wrong with anything off Impossible Kid or Spirit World Field Guide.

    You should check out 1,000 whispers by Illogic, if you think this was good then that’s gonna put you in a trance, also “Fumes” is one of my favorites from Aesop

    I know you already have a million other Recs, but Please do yourself a favor and make a reaction to Acid King - You'll want to have the music video on your computer and lyrics on your phone / Second monitor.
    The true story of Ricky Kasso. I won't link anything [to any news articles, wiki, ect] here before you hear the song, but it's haunting and the amount of detail he covers in such a short time is insane.
    Here is the music video:

    I think the Kool aid is about him treating his art like a cult or something... The only thing I can relate to since the whole Jonestown Massacre killed themselves with Cyanide laced kool aid.

    So funny listening to people hearing aes for the first time. They miss it's all concepts and a whole heap of double meanings and having to use your imagination to understand what are spits. No-one does it better and no-one does it anywhere close to to his complex rhyme schemes. The dopest to spit in my opinion 😊

      You can't _hear_ Aesop's lyrics, you have to _imagine_ the lyrics. It is a painting made out of words.
