To be honest, It's good to see and hear about some of the struggles and issues one has had to deal with/overcome. It keeps things real. I think it shows a side to Joey that is much more relatable and bring a more tangible and emotional side to a channel and platform that, yes brings people together, but it's also a very one sided interaction in the majority of cases. Joey was one of the first people I came across when I started this hobby and youtube. I have done many of his DIY projects. I think it is the dream of a lot of people to do what he has done. I don't think a lot of people realize the amount of effort, money and personal sacrifice it takes to do something like this. While I had mixed feelings on the whole asking for money situation, from my POV, the community paid to see content, they funded this venture to see Joey put his talents and abilities to the test and I feel he has delivered. Keep on doing your thing Joey, the community wouldn't be the same without you. Nor you Rachel! Thank you for your content and this awesome Interview. :)

Jon - go back and watch the videos of when he lost one his ray and one of his Asians I believe. I believe one was due to a faulty heater and it was electrocuted. So other fish losses also. This was when he only had a few really standout aquiriums. It took him months to talk about it on video. Also how hard it was for him to ask for help.

    • @BearNecessitiesOfLife

I think a lot of people get caught up in all that he has and how on social media - a lot of the times you tend to see the best side of people. No one wants to go onto the world wide web and show everyone how they may have messed up or made a mistake. Specially when it comes to a loved pet or stock you're caring for or in his case that and family related issues. It shows that he is human just like the rest of us and that no one is free of fault. Does that make sense?

thank you for making this so real. I tell many youtuber's that it so refreshing to see people be real and transparent. I know that no one has an obligation to reveal their personal lives because truthfully its not really our business to know. that said that you are willing to go there to be who you really are makes me personally respect you even more. So thank you for being so open and honest with us. love you both and Merry Christmas

Joey and you Rachel mentioned the fact that the minute he started realizing his dream the jealousy started showing up. I noticed a few things on UA-cam by some people that put him down for the help he was getting. It really saddened me. And I thought alright, let's see what one of these "doggy downers" had to offer that was oh so much better. Know what, they didn't even have any videos, except for ones that are on "playlists". None of their own! Definitely not worth any effort on my part to notice them any further. Glad you both take the high road! Blessings to you both! YOU BOTH ROCK!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Yeah, the moment joey started getting help from people and joeys UA-cam channel was on trending Dustin’s fish tanks started showing even more hate towards him then eventually he made an apology video to Joey cause of all the hate he got for all the rude comments. Unlike Cory from Aquarium CO - Op or Bob from Steenfott Aquatics both congratulated him. Let’s be honest though you would have to be naive to believe that people in the hobby aren’t a little bit jealous even they won’t admit to it.

I'll still support her content cause I enjoy some of her videos. I'm glad joey did it been watching him for years it was a very honest way to handle the situation. Like he has said in the past, he's grinded for years to be where he is now.

I appreciate both of you for opening my eyes to the world of fishkeeping beyond that one overcrowded, inappropriately-stocked community tank that is the beginning and ending of the hobby for so many of us. I would have never had the knowledge to pick compatible species. I would not have thought to set up species only tanks for easier care of those species, and I would not have had the confidence to choose a much larger tank to keep larger species of fish in comfort. Joey's down to earth pragmatism and Rachel's love and respect for the fish she keeps are a constant inspiration to me. Best wishes to you both.

Joey, you don't see your gallery as a work of art, but it is. Anybody that has a scaped aquarium that mimics nature and even sometimes not mimic nature, all have works of art. Nature is the highest form of art to me. It is living, interactive, art that is always so amazing. When you bring that into a tank and recreate nature, you literally have a glass box of living art that has interaction that changes all the time. 👍🏼

This was eye-opening. Thank you for making a video like this. Speaking to the "expert" issue, I found the following etymology, which may make the word more applicable to both you and Joey and anyone who devotes time to learning something well: "Middle English (as an adjective): from French, from Latin expertus, past participle of experiri ‘try.’ The noun use dates from the early 19th century. Compare with experience and experiment." It seems that the definition is really "one who has tried," and certainly that is true of Joey, always experimenting and increasing experience--always, as he said, a learner.

Great to hear him speak about his sponsors. I know his roots are in DIY but he’s already done it all. The new content does great to bring new people into the hobby. Most people getting into the hobby don’t have a need to build their own tanks, filters, and etc. Great to have exposure of what’s possible in the hobby and the different types of tanks hobbyists can acquire. Thanks for the video Rachel and Joey. Appreciate the work you put in for the community!

I usually watched mostly Joey and Jennie from Solid Gold
But lately I am making room for both Rachel and Cory (from Aquarium Co-Op) ;) Both deserve people watching their videos
(now speaking for myself) I dont always watch them just to Iearn about this hobby (since I am in this hobby for many years) but I do like to watch people passionate about this hobby (and fish)
For example I can always understand when Joey is excited about a new fish (or when he said that most of us loves to bring home a new fish.. or at least I do @ Joey)
I often found myself when I watched his video: Yes man.. That is exactly how it is (or how I feel too)
For example I m not even a fan of arowans but seeing him so excited and hyped I started to like his fish and really hope they get along (cuz I also had moments in the past when I struggled with some fish to get along.. I am a big fan of having peace and harmony in my tanks and I hate when someone is a bully in the tank haha)
Same goes for Jennie.. To be honest I dont like (much) her Butterfly Telescopes Goldfish (when I had Goldfish I went mostly for fantails with normal eyes / not BIG eyes.. and they are still my favorite when it comes to Goldfish.. when they go BIG they have some beautiful tails and I like their overall shape). BUT I keep watching her because she is passionate and excited about fish (we all love fish and everyone of us is free to love whatever fish we want. So I will never say to Jennie something like: Quit keeping this type of Goldfish cuz I dont like it). Of course with Joey this ,,problem,, has been removed since he keeps more types of fish now :D (you have from where to pick your favorites)

Joey, I've been subscribed to your channel for years. I have used several of your awesome techniques. I personally like the new sponsors influence. The gallery is a good example of what a fish room should be like. Rachel thanks for all you do and this great episode. Subscribed but has been clicked after this....

I'm new to Joey but man, what a human being! I love his energy and dedication. Did he really lose his family over the hobby? that's so heavy to hear, I hope he recovered his life

It's refreshing to watch two of my favorite " fish people" having the humility to ask each other questions. To share their experience rather than be competitive. I really think that this is a eye opener to business helping business. How all people prosper. Thanks and God bless you too long eared galloots

Are you paying your bills? Do you love what you do? Then you are truly LIVING! Congrats! I'm really hoping to see a special on tall or high tanks from one of you. John Bear is struggling with his 40G bow,and any tips would be amazing.

Joey you are one of the Real Ones left in this life, you too Rachel O'Leary! Thank you so much for being really into this hobby of fish/aquariums etc., We go to pet smart, or pet land, or any other popular store... they sell (fish, turtles, snakes, and birds) without explaining a true understanding of how to take the best care for them and the true responsibility of taking care of these fish as well as the care info one needs to give the fish it's best care! Truly thankful for people like you and Joey who really care and enjoy the love of the aquatic life!

Success will always attract negative feelings and comments from some. Im sure it's hard (impossible maybe?) not to be affected by these and I'll guess it makes you sad to experience these negatives sometimes. There's no way to avoid these, but the vast majority of your viewers feel so positive and appreciative of everything you're doing, that I hope these positives will always outweigh the negatives and lift you up when you might otherwise feel down. On your side of the lens, you step in front of a camera, but on our side, you step into our lives. You help us with our struggles, you improve our knowledge and raise our skills, you entertain us and lift our spirits when our own days may have not gone so well. That knowledge you provide improves the welfare and lives of our pets, and through word of mouth, even those of many hobbyists who never even see your channels. Your videos bring you into our lives and that makes you part of them. Due to this, the vast majority of us actually care about you as people. We want to hear of your struggles when things are hard, we want to hear of your losses when they've made you sad, we want to help and give something back, even if that's just some words of support to help lift you up when times are hard. Keep up the hard work and dedication guys, it's doing much more than maybe you even realise for this hobby of ours.

Love both the channels and really nice to see two awesome fish nerds collaborating! Great contents as always. If you guys are gonna do more interviews I was curious about how you both transitioned from having tanks to making a UA-cam presence/regular videos- was having fish and YouTubing simultaneous, or did one kind of promote the other?
