I'm an ARC at an office in upstate NY. Been at it about 2 years. My LLV training was at a special area for that at the Albany NY GMF. There was two of us, each with an instructor. Vehicles were explained, they went over the inspection technique, and told us about the history of LLV's. Began with a clearance rack we had to go through without hitting the side mirrors on the vertical bars. Then around a cone course, and show we could stop at the proper point using the front mirrors Then to the mailboxes. Cones were placed in my blind spots a couple times. Then parallel parking, and alternate backing into lined spaces. I messed this up the first time, I wasn't between the lines accurately enough for the first instructor. Did better the second time around, then to the road test. My instructor sat alongside me in an observer seat. Since it was covid time, the was a plastic screen between us. He directed me where to go. Did well on that part. We were shown the Metris when we got back. Even though my office has Caravans and Metris vans, I still prefer the LLV for package delivery. They just work better for me ergonomically. My job description says I could be asked to learn to case and deliver regular mail if needed, but so far, haven't been needed for that, so I just do my Amazon Sundays.
I passed the LLV driving course in January 2023, then last week I passed the: FFV, Mercedes, and Pro Master driving test. I enjoyed driving the Pro Master because he has: good turning, the steering wheel is on the left hand side on the vehicle, it's big enough to fit a 6 feet person and the packages, it has multiple cameras. I learned how to Parallel Park in such an efficient way that I feel like can parallel park any size vehicle, if I have the right parking space and time.
I had my LLV training on the 29th of October. It has changed a bit but I believe it’s due to Covid. It was a one day deal. The trainer can only do one person and is not allowed to be in the vehicle. So we went through a packet, went over the vehicle inspection and then he walked beside the truck as I did the driving. You’re correct about it still being pass or fail but I don’t think they fail anyone very often. Then we drove around town. I followed him and that was that. The academy is 4 days and you get 3-5 days of OJI. I can also answer questions if you need recent answers. Thank you for your videos and Jay H. and all of his info too. You two are great!!
Your videos and advice are great. I am a new RCA, just completed defense driving last week, and did the driving course portion a couples days ago. Yes like other comment's are true. During my session we had two trainers and there was me and another RCA. So one trainer was with me and the other trainer was with the other RCA. They worked with us outside of the llv, promaster, and ffv(crv). The inspection of all of them, and in the driving coarse we just drove the llvs, then took them out on the street. The one instructor drove a government vehicle and the other drove the promaster. It was like a convoy kind of thing. The one instructor was leading us, then I was behind him and the other llv was behind me and then the promaster was in the end. If you have any questions about RCA, training parts just let me know. Its almost like CCA but we are just in the country driving not walking alot, unless we have to walk to an apartment building. They really were repetitive on if you can't see your vehicle to secure it, curbing your wheels, setting your emergency brake, put in park, turning off your vehicle and pulling the key out. Oh and backing up, don't back up at all. If you have to make sure there isn't anything behind you. Even if you think there isn't curb your wheels, set brake, put in park vehicle and turn off vehicle and take key out. Go check then before you back up blow your horn a few times. Thanks again for all your videos they are all great. Take care and have a great rest of your week.
