  • NYO presents: 'Running Riot!', a series of short films created during NYO's Open Up: Running Riot! Spring Residency at the University of Kent in 2022. Taking inspiration from Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring which shocked audiences with its urgent drama and radical rhythms, NYO’s teenagers are preparing to push boundaries and team up with composers who are celebrating difference and diversity right now.

    SUPPORT NYO
Too many talented cellists, flautists, percussionists - instrumentalists of all kinds - are now without opportunities at school to play in an orchestra, left playing on their own to their teacher, parents, and their bedroom wallpaper, as this wonderful music dries up in many state schools. Your support can provide a ladder of opportunities for immersing young musicians in the soaring experience of playing in a high-level orchestra for the first time, and ignite a life-long passion for the music you love.
Many world-class orchestras have sought out musicians who were pushed to be all they could be in NYO. In this way, by supporting a teenage musician through NYO, you will be helping to shape the future of the music you love, and we look forward to sharing their wonderful music-making with you - live, and at home thanks to the internet. You will also be helping us to take this extraordinary music out into our neighbourhoods and schools so that more young people, who may never have heard live, high-quality orchestral music get to hear it, fall in love with it as you have, and feel inspired to search out more of it.

6 oboes, 8 trombones, 9 horns, 7 trumpets, 4 bassoons. My god, what a giant wind section.

Yes, the NYO always augments the numbers quite markedly; as many string players as they can fit, plus twice as many wind and brass players, almost doubling nearly all the parts, in order to give this incredible experience to as many young musicians as possible. For example, in this particular work, Stravinsky scored it for quintuple winds and brass- ie 5 flutes ( including one piccolo flute and one alto flute), 5 oboes ( including one cor anglais), 5 clarinets ( including one piccolo and one bass clarinet- although the third clarinet also plays a second bass clarinet on occasions), 5 bassoons (including one contrabassoon), 5 trumpets ( including one piccolo trumpet), plus 3 trombones and 2 tubas. The only exception is that he writes for 8 horns.
