He is absolutely right about primus being americana. I have been describing them as possibly the most americana band possible for a while without ever hearing anyone else say it. It makes me happy to know les knows this to the point that he stood firmly on it.

It all depends on whose list you're reading. Technically he didn't really pioneer any of the techniques he uses, like Victor Wooten with the double thump. But the way he used them established a sound that was truly his own. Listen to, "A Portrait Of Tracy". Nobody was writing harmonic dominated tunes like that before Jaco came along. Les was NOT in "interview mode" for this-he seems a little peeved. Kyle probably wasn't born when Primus released Suck on This. I have Frizzle Fry on red vinyl and got it when I was 22. Changed my life. Before then, I felt the same way Les did. Geddy Lee is the best bass player, ever.

I was about 10 when Frizzle arrived. It did take a moment for the interview to warm up. The followup interview with him and Sean Lennon was quite a bit better, not that I didn’t enjoy this one. I remember us cutting up some after the cameras were off.
