  • Brette Harrington discusses her approach to free soloing the Chiaro de Luna in Patagonia and debates Alex Honnold on the risks and rewards of soloing. Plus, how it makes you a better parent - or does it?
Big, audacious dreams come with real risks. The dreamers are presented with a labyrinth of physical hazards, possible outcomes, hurdles, and dead ends. Often, we are told that success comes down to positive thinking, but maybe there’s a flip side to that coin. Brette Harrington, Marc-Andre Leclerc's former partner and renowned alpine free soloist, breaks down her approach to this climbers conundrum.

Brette's view on 'doing it for yourself' was certainly something I thought about when I saw the Ueli Steck/Dani Andrade movie on Netflix. Their very public image stood in contrast to what Brette and Marc-André seemed to be about (I'm not necessarily saying one is objectively better than the other, by the way).

I think risk is fine for oneself; but one should not tell others to emulate your practices.
