    Josh, absolutely love your content. One correction though, the 40 series cards actually do NOT scale with more power EXCEPT for the 4080 and 4090. That's why there is a huge performance gap between the x16 4090 and the M16 4080. For the 4070 and lower, they cap out at pretty much 100W. The XPS 17 had only 70W so there would definitely be a difference between that and the 125W Legion, but the lower end 40 series cards do not benefit from more wattage past 100W as a lot of tests have shown.

      @suschilegge1683 Рік тому

      Yes they top out at 0.925-1v depending on the model, which translates to about 105w max. They can go higher than that and will benefit from more power when more parts of the gpu are utilized heavily at the same time (eg vram)

    • @chrisbullock6477

      There's also a huge price difference..LOL.. It all comes down to getting the most performance, configuration, quality of build, port selection and best user experience and battery life for what you need it for. For some this could be overkill and last them several years and for others its just a stop gap between an Office Workstation Desktop and Home Office/Mobile computer and is more than enough. Then considering the cost to go up to something like a 4090 or even 4080 gpu config might not be work it at the end of the day for 95% of people.

      exactly, this needs to have much more visibility. A laptop with 140W GPU is exactly the same as a 100W and it is nonetheless used for marketing (see razer blade 14, etc). Big yikes from nvidia (if it's them who made this artificial limitation that desktop GPUs don't have) and laptop OEMs who ignore this

    Unfortunately, you didn't mention the most important or at least a very good argument for buying the Legion. I own a Yoga 7, an IdeaPad Pro (7840HS) and have had several Legions. Legions have the great advantage that they have fan control, either via Vantage or (even better) LegionToolKit without Lenovo bloatware. If you place the Legion on a cooler (ideally with a Noctua fans), you can turn the fans down to a minimum under load, so that you have a relatively quiet notebook even when gaming. Yoga, IdeaPad, Thinkbook/-pad cannot do that. The fans even run below 35°C and you cannot really change it (see the comments on YT, Reddit, etc. about the current IdeaPad Pro and Yoga, Yoga Pro). So I'm switching back to the Legion Slim because I need to concentrate for work and the fan noise annoys me on the Yoga or Ideapad Pro.

    I'd also choose yoga pro 9i over legion slim 7 if they're in the same price range. However I can purchase the slim 7(AMD variant with rtx 4060) at around 1650 Euro(1500 to Lenovo and 150 for SSD and RAM on Amazon), whereas the yoga pro 9i costs 2500 Euro. Obviously i9 is faster but the price gap is too hard to swallow...

      I've read some reviews on the ryzen 7 7840hs, and its very good at preserving energy compared to Intels and still perform great.
      Tech Guy Beau has a review and some real testing on a legion slim 7 gen8 with amd, and his testings show a huge improvement in battery life compared to same setup with a intel cpu ( light usage, simple programs, watching movies/youtube ).
      One more thing is that he shows that legion runs very well in balance mode and even silent mode when playing games, if u want a more quiet/less warm experience with just a tiny loss, 5-10%, in performance.

    Nice video as always. I have the 2023 Slim 7i with the i9/4070. The conclusion I came to was that it was about on par with the Asus M16 for being a classy/premium looking 16" gaming/workstation laptop, and often available for substantially cheaper than the M16 (I paid $1450 USD for the config in the video). I have been very happy with it, though I wish I got the 3200x2000 display instead of the 2560x1600 240hz. So far I have never found a use case where I wouldn't rather have 120hz and better graphics/less heat/less noise, beyond just web browsing/desktop stuff.
    Would highly recommend it as someone that previously had an M1 Macbook Pro and a high end (5900x/3090) desktop PC. I think Macbooks are in a league of their own, but if you need to play games or use Windows exclusive software this is a good choice.
    I got rid of the McAfee/Tobii/etc immediately and replaced the Lenovo software with the open source Lenovo Legion Toolkit.

    QUESTION AND SUGGESTION
    Josh, just found your channel and subscribed. Heres a major problem ive discovered that ive never heard anyone discuss...the intel Evo processors and iris integrared graphics marketed as a package to computer manufacturers to give the best computer experience and run the computer more effectively and efficiently and 2ndly the the poor battery life in lenovos.
    Let me explain how i dove into this rabbit hole and wondering if you could do a deep dive.
    1st off the battery life. Lenovo uses lithium ions and newer li-pos. After much reading i feel the lithium ions are better. In my current purchase of lenovo evo/iris intel 7i, the battery lifee blows. Ive researched every fix and basically have to use lenovo vantage on the most basic mode but super battery saver mode to turn everything down that 'drains' the battery to squeeze more time out of it. Why? Why build a laptop when you cant use the functions to their fullest extent even half day (really only a few hours) on a flight or in a coffee shop unplugged . If i want to take the laptop wout the charger for a day, i cant....even on super duper power saving mode.
    Its like buying a car then sayin, well, if u want your car to run right, turn off all the accessories when you drive. No radio, no ac, no heated seats, etc. I honestly think this battery life needs to be addresed and is a joke and you get even less time on battery bc vantage battery saver charges your battery to 60 percent.
    And something else i discovered is that the lenovo does not warranty the battery after 1 year and i still believe off my research that li-ions are better for portability and longevity bc of the constant charging cycles.
    This is a common problem listed on lenovo forums that lenovo battery life is horrible.
    Is there a portable laptop that runs a good part of the day on battery?
    2ndly, what are your thoughts on the intel evo/iris combo? When i compare specs to an amd processor and graphics, i often see amd performing better, even on battery life. I feel the the evo/iris combo means well, but limiting. Whats your thoughts?
    What brought this all about was my Costco comparison and use of 2 14 inch portable 2 in 1 lenovo laptops that are very similar that i was looking at that also lead me to reasearching other brands in the 14" portable market ($600 to $800 us range) and really hit on the 2 points of poor battery life and the difference of the intel evo and AMD internal processing/gpu specs and their performance.
    Computer guidelines use was for home, business, YT movies, not gaming, drawing, and portability, 2 in 1, and price as indicated.
    The 2 compared that started me down the rabbit hole and discovery:
    Lenovo flex 5 AMD Ryzen™ 7 7730U (8-core) Processor Item 1725651 Model 82XX003YUS
    Lenovo flex 7i Intel Evo Platform 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1355U (10-core) processor
    Item 1009809 Model 82Y20001US
    PS The flex 5, while a tab bit older, performs better and battery last longer. The major diff in performance was the evo had a little more data transfer speed vs the ryzen, but thats not even noticeable.
    So in the end, what are the mfrs doing to improve battery life wout having the consumer turn everything off and are u a fan of the evo/ iris comb?
    Thanks

      I hope your queries get addressed.. I chose Nvidia graphics card over Intel Iris as I wanted to experience the powerful graphics existing in the market.. I wasn't aware that the battery doesn't last longer, but I had to choose a windows laptop over MacBook due to my research requirements, hope my usage will sustain it longer as I don't plan to play heavy games on this laptop, its mostly for programming & reading stuff..

    I purchased this laptop a few months ago based on your review of last years model, and I've absolutely loved it! I ended up buying the higher resolution panel, as I enjoy that extra resolution for programming and productivity tasks. For gaming, I tend to use an external monitor anyways, so it ends up not being a big deal.
    As for the fan noise, it is actually quite a bit, but I noticed for lighter 1080p gaming it actually is near silent. And having a laptop stand helps a ton.
    As for macafee, I never had those popups, perhaps it's because I just uninstalled it in the first 10 minutes of booting up the laptop. But I 100% agree, the bloatware is stupid and ridiculous
    This laptop does often go on sale (the bestbuy version going down to about 1800) which is when I bought it, and I am very happy with the purchase overall

    Please DON'T BUY this Legion Slim 7i 13th Gen laptop. You're limited to Windows 11 OS only. Lenovo provides drivers only for this OS version. You can't install any other Operating Systems on this machine. It has provisions only for two RAM slots and two SSD slots. It generates more heat. I bought one by my wrong decision. Now I regret. The only annoying part is carrying the brick, I couldn't find a USBc 140w charger that would work with it 100% and after a bunch of research found and ordered the official small 135w usbc Lenovo Legion charger

      Hi Ali,
      I'm confused whether to go for slim 7i or Predator Helios 16. I've heard that slim 7i has screen bleeding issue. Is that true? Which one do you suggest?
      I need laptop for video editing, content creation and Data Science.

    • @alishaverdi332
      @alishaverdi332 Рік тому +4

      I got the i9 4070 2k 240hz screen (brighter and faster was more important to me than 3k). My main use is work and productivity, I'm a project manager, but I'm planning to start studying business analysis, so when choosing a laptop, I needed something that will handle Tableau, power bi, etc. I was using a 14 inch and the size was effecting my ability to multitask so i really wanted something bigger but i was hesitant because i was worried about weight, footprint, battery life, etc. After the 1st week with this, I've come to the conclusion that I've finally found the perfect windows laptop and that it would be very difficult to convince me to shift to another line or brand in the future.
      The minimum requirements i was looking for were:
      Good port selection (including USBA, hdmi 2.1, 2+ thunderbolts), not too heavy, not too thick, good keyboard (numpad is a big plus for me and full size arrow keys is just ❤️), decent or better track pad, 15 inch screen or more with thin bezels, 2k resolution (less is horrible to look at, more is too much and kills battery), bright enough, 120hz minrefresh rate min (multitasking and lots of scrolling with 60hz for too long hurts my eyes), 32 gb ram (exact, no more or less), at least 5 hours battery life or multitasking with medium brightness, good build quality. I was willing to spend up to 2100 to get something that checks all the boxes and would last long.

    • @alishaverdi332
      @alishaverdi332 Рік тому +3

      Every other option in my budget couldn't check all these boxes (yoga pro 9i, xps 15, galaxybook 3 ultra, zenbook 14x oled, etc.)
      This is definitely the perfect laptop for every use, productivity, multitasking, programming, gaming, and just about everything else you would want while it stays portable enough. None of the compromises you'll make when buying this over your other choices will be too much that you'll regret. You're sacrificing a very acceptable amount on portability, battery life, temperature, screen quality, and anything else on your requirement list.
      I still haven't gamed on it.
      My unit had a manufacturing issue where there's a click sound from the chassis every time you pick it up, they gave me a replacement 3 days later that had no issues and I've had no screen bleed.

    • @alishaverdi332
      @alishaverdi332 Рік тому +3

      The one negative I'd complain about is the power brick being heavy and big. It's too inconvenient to carry around. I did some online digging before buying a USBc Gan charger, and many were complaining about what they bought, not working or working sometimes, then not.
      After thorough research it turned out that Lenovo China has a very slim and light legion USBc Gan charger that's 135w which is the only option that's 100% guaranteed to work, it's not expensive so I ordered it but it takes long to deliver.

    • @shivakumarpanaganti258
      @shivakumarpanaganti258 Рік тому +3

      @@alishaverdi332 Thank you Ali for detailed review and explanation.
      The only thing that made me think twice was the screen bleed as mentioned by Jarrod's Tech in his review video.
      Infact we share the same interest and I'm also learning PowerBi, Tableau, Python and SQL and want a machine which can handle the task loads. I'm also thinking to start a youtube channel to post daily updates so the screeb should also be 100% color accurate. I'm thinking of going with 3k×2k 165hz panel.
      I'd like to hear your opinion on that... ☺️☺️

      Bugdet: under $1300
      CPU: I7 (12th to 14th) or Ryzen 7
      GPU: 4050 or 4060
      Storage: 1TB
      Memory: 16gb
      Display: 15" to 16" and FHD+ to 2.5k (preferably 120hz+)

    Thanks for noting that in the real world people who work and have credit are the ones buying these, not 16-21 year olds. Myself and many of my coworkers at software startups are the ones who look at and use laptops like this not just to play video games all day. These are for Mobile work in Graphic Design/Web Design and Programming and 3D Editing software. And of course the occasional gaming if you don't already have a desktop or console device for playing a "video game".
