Grant was almost twice Phil's build, ex army and had more brute force and strength than Phil. Dan Sullivan was also a man who Phil could not beat physically when Dan pinned Phil to a wall once in April 2000. Grant was a very, very physically powerful and very aggressive hardman.
Phil hit Sharon twice in 2003 and 2015 Hit Kathy twice in 1996 and 2016 Hit lisa in 2000 Hit Mel In 2002 Hit Peggy in 2010. Phil has hit 5 woman in the face between 1996 to 2016.

When Grant left in late 1999 The writers were in an awkward position as they had become so dependent on him. So they turned to Phil instead. By doing that they tried to make him like grant giving him similar plots that Grant would’ve had but in my humble opinion it didn’t really work because they just made him far too nasty and hateable.
This angers me I really can’t see what these two saw in bleeding Sharon. She was an absolute Minger and a dislikable person as well with her whiney voice. She really is not all that as she claims. It angers me the fact that they’ve brought her back a few times and she’s still in it her character needs shooting

It really does amaze me how so much of the EE fandom marvel over the 90s era. The dialogue here is atrociously on the nose. The performance (particularly from Kemp) are comically awful. The scene with Phil and Grant arguing outside the pub feels like an off the cuff improvised script at some budget am dram youth theatres The show today has its flaws (particularly under Jon Senn and post the Covid return) but it's not this feeble. Although compared to when Tiffany turns up to chew up the scenery, I suppose this should be considered comparably better.
You got to be having a laugh ,the dialogue the acting was miles better then any current day EastEnders.Ross kemp in sharongate episode in garage with Phil was a master class in raw emotion something which you wouldn't find on modern day EastEnders
@@diehard21000 all I can say is watch this scene again. Am-dram at its most banal. I'm not dismissing the early days by any stretch although I'd say its most authentic period was in the 80s. The 90s had many high points, but there was a drift towards ratings chasing and simplistic spoon fed story telling. The modern era has many problems, but there is generally much sharper dialogue and characterisation much more richly drawn. Take Sharon for instance. In the 90s, the actress was directed to essentially do a Dynasty/Dallas tribute act with tired pantomime villainy to match. Nowadays, we have a much more rounded character who has the lingering influence of her parents and who gave a startlingly rich performance of a grieving mother. (Admittedly the kill Ian plot was a bit questionable)
@@Dean_dialectic I totally disagree in the 90s the characters were more realistic and dialogue far more believable and felt more authentic.Nowerdays characters have many holes and storylines forgot in a instance .Look at all that rubbish of when Gavin was calling Sharon princes. As you say the Sharon attempt to kill Ian was ridiculous as was being a doormat for Phil.I believe the drift started after the who shot Phil which was sensational at the time in good way but has been done many times since in different guise. If you look at Kat now and when Kat started in EastEnders it's night and day to see characters were better written years ago.
Phil has been in EastEnders for so long that he used to have hair and be in decent shape. Crazy.
