My daughter used to ask me to "rent" movies off of the internet. The cost is usually $4-$5 for 24 hours. We have found almost all the movies she wants to watch at our local resale shop for about the same price. Buy used, buy physical.

I really wish games were the same. I wish old games could be reprinted as easily as music and movies. If people insist on physical, then they should get these publishers to rework their old games to work on PC and print them all to disks. That's the only way for physical games to be as accessible as other forms of media.

When I was a kid, my dad made me a wooden caddy that held about 15-20 NES games. I remember alphabetizing my games and admiring my collection and being so thankful for the games that I had. Opening up a fresh copy of Metroid Prime Remastered brings back that vibe in a way that digital downloads never will. I sincerely hope the next Nintendo console still plays physical media.

Physical doesn’t really feel like old physical though because of updates. My Wi-Fi was down and I couldn’t play my physical games even though they were downloaded, it still had to update to start. I only have 2 games physical and the rest digital I couldn’t care less about owning new physical games. That’s why I love retro gaming and prefer it over modern.

@@kang6914 makes sense. I would argue that even retro games don’t fully capture the magic of getting a new NES or Gameboy game unless you get CIB and I’ve been priced out of that market for a long time now.

"Don't buy unfinished games"..... Aren't all the games we buy incomplete in some capacity anyways? Think about the GOTY business model, our games are missing like 50% of it's content in DLC form, so everyone who buys ANY game on release date, has to pay £20 on top for a season pass, to access the rest of their game content. I hate modern gaming so much, I'm completely happy not to go anywhere near this gen, no regrets. Games decrease in value over time nowadays anyways fairly quickly.

I heard recently that kids and young teens today are basically becoming "in the moment" gamers. Always playing the latest and greatest following the hype. I think they might feel this way right now but at some point when they grow older they will want to revisit those childhood games. They'll want to relive those memories and experience the nostalgia. When that time eventually comes, I fear that the games they grew up on will either not be available any more, or it will be so different than how it was 10-20 years ago. While we grew up with Mario Kart, Halo 2, Smash Bros Melee, they are currently playing Fortnite, Minecraft and Roblox. Those games have and will change much more over time, to the point that they are no longer recognizable. There's a reason why World of Warcraft classic was such a big deal for many people. I fear that as time goes on it will be more and more difficult to go back and experience that nostalgia as games/ movies change over time or flat out gets wiped away from the internet due to no one being able to make copies for preservation. The gaming industry doesn't care about preserving the art, it's just a product to them. Only the biggest most beloved games will get those remasters, so they can resell you the same game every 5-10 years. The smaller games or more obscure ones will be left behind and eventually forgotten. Losing history in this way is a depressing thought.

That is mainly why i buy merch for it. A lot of the time, "official" merch is overpriced and not always the best quality, and a lot of people that are collectors see the most value in the official stuff. However, I go for good quality items in general that maybe hasn't been officially done before or really cool. Same with posters or artwork that the original artist did or something, but in a different size, like a game case I can use as a poster. It is nice to have that tangible feedback from when you associate games with certain pieces of hardware. Makes it feel like when you are taking care of that item, that you are taking care of a game that has given you satisfaction and you can't get that sort of sentimental feeling with digital games, just your memories or any merch you buy.

Great comments you guys! Everything spot on! I hate programed obsolescence and what they are doing to us consumers
I'm realizing now that we created this problem for ourselves... think back to the late 90s and early 2000s, I'm sure a lot of us were downloading all sorts of media that we weren't supposed to like music movies and videogames
Think Napster, think Limewire, think about the torrent sites we used to use to fill our hard drives with a lot of bootlegged content
All that happened is companies realized this and capitalized on it because they knew a lot of us were relying on digital media already
Yes they took advantage of us but we basked in the glories of the digital era pretty much immediately very early on
Think about how Metallica was right in the end and sharing music digitally ended up hurting the artist more so than helping them, you can say that anyone can be discovered with this technology but think about when was the last time you bought a brand new music CD from your favorite artist
It's a big pill to swallow that we're very close to that dreaded all digital future

Here in Finland we still have thankfully many stores (even department stores like Prisma) with sections filled with different physical video games without any empty spots. However, I've also noticed that how digital media have been slowly taking over the market here too. Those shelves that still have video games in different stores, tend to be narrowed (except local video game based stores) from the days when I was a kid (mostly 2000's) and have only like couple copies of each game at the same time in the shelf (back in the day there was tens of copies at the same time of each game and every time when there came brand new game it was highlighted with Its own stand mainly at the large walkway near the video game shelves or video game section). I've also noticed that more and more those physical copies that stores are selling for you can be found and bought only from their own websites (this is not a problem for me because I'm good for buying physical copies from websites but It's not good for those who can't afford or don't want to use the internet). And as many other people have already highlighted it here, I'm also disappointed to see that kind of development because I'm favoring more physical video games than digital. It's because when you buy a physical video game you don't have to be connected to the internet as often as with digital copies (which of course pays and annoys the crap out when it cuts out for some reason especially right at the moment when you're downloading something) and with physical copy you can guarantee that you really own it and can reinstall it back to your console and, if it breaks down to unrepearable condition, you can even install it to a new console without paying extra just by putting your disc into your console (with digital downloads you can't reinstall it for free if your console's hardware breaks down and you have to download it again for new console from console's online store, and also you can't download it again if you're already living at the time when console's own store servers have been shut down). Those are the reasons why I've already bought (and I'm going to buy in the future) only physical consoles instead of digital only ones and only physical games instead of digitally downloadable ones. I see physical video games as worthy items filled with worthy memories from their own generations, not just some dust collecting trash that waste earth's resources.

“Love thy neighbor“ is something that used to be taught in every culture all across the world and while some cultures might still be teaching something similar to that, in America the new motto is:
    You should hate everybody?!?
    The future sucks-
    Way too many cowards-
A coward would never stand up against the crowd and say “you know guys there’s a lot that’s wrong with this and you should be ashamed of yourselves?“
    Cowards only blend in..
My point being is when the numbers of people get so high it’s only inevitable that we would have a higher number of more people that do not know something as simple as right from wrong!
    Great video as always guys!!!
Last of a dying breed for sure!

I asked him to show me his game room and he was so excited to show me! As I entered his room it was a computer desk, mouse and PC. He started talking to me about the graphics card, specs, etc. Nothing physical in sight. No discs, cartridges, nothing. It’s heartbreaking that in 2023 THAT is considered a gamer. I am so passionate about physical media, 80’s and 90’s nostalgia. An easier time, for sure. It’s sad that new generation gamers and old school gamers really have nothing in common.

I didn't even notice your last video got 7 times the number of views as you guys have subscribers congratulations on having such a hit. I usually play new games on PC and the only thing I don't like about PC gaming is games usually haven't been released on discs since at least a decade. I still buy older PC games physically when I can for so many reasons. I don't really care about lending my games on account of the fact that I don't have friends but I like the fact that I don't have to worry about Eidos taking away my right to play Thief The Dark Project because I have the discs and they'd have to call a SWAT team to raid my house to even have a chance to take them from me. Also when I was in the army I couldn't afford internet because it was expensive in that part of Alaska and I got paid less than minimum wage so I could only play video games physically. And even aside from reasons like those and more, having a collection of all the video games I like is just cool.

I already remember games from back when I was in high school that were browser-based. Those games no longer exist, and if there are ANY versions of them existing anywhere, it's not publicly available. It's really depressing knowing that those games simply no longer exist. Since then, I'm doing what I can to make physical cracked versions of media that was only released digitally, that way if anything happens, it hopefully isn't lost forever. Of course, there's only so much you can do, and even physical media decays beyond repair sooner or later, but it's better than nothing.

Another thing people may not have thought about is also when something physical becomes OOP (Out of Print) and the prices skyrocket like no other and sadly this applies to all forms of media being vide games, movies, cds, ect... I'm really into anime and have been looking for classics i loved back in the day and cant find a copy and if i do it's over 100 dollars or more for 3 episodes on a DVD... Limited run games and the other companies like them are one reason i can't collect games anymore besides the OOP issue i stated because sense they only produce a "limited" quantity of games they may sell for 60 bucks when they release them but they automatically jump in price as soon as they are bought just because of all the scalpers and just the low amount of copies produced.

  • @Doublepulse

The issue with the subscription model is that it is always up to the companies discretion on what games you are allowed to play. There are so many hidden gems and so many titles that could be resurfaced and get a new audience for. It comes off like "Who cares about X game anymore, lets not bother adding that one"
Now in days I keep both a physical copy and a digital backup of my games.

My biggest gripe with having digital media besides not actually owning anything is the bullshit internet cap, 1.2TB monthly, factoring in streaming services for shows/movies, downloading big ass games, playing online games, and then all the phone stuff. I’ve paid enough overage fees to buy probably 10 games just last year alone.
Luckily, I’ve been buying physical media for games, shows, & movies pretty heavy for the past decade. I’ve got a nice enough backlog to last me the rest of my life.

I totally agree with you guys it’s sucks and it’s sad to see that physical media getting phased out. And if it makes me a “get off my lawn” type of person, so be it, I’m fine with that, I’m always going to advocate for physical video games, I’m a physical collector and I love looking at the amazing box arts and holding it in my hand and looking through the manual and it usually gave you a back story of some the characters, you would see art work of the environments/characters as well. I remember getting games and consoles as well from Christmas or my birthday and being able to open it and it’s physically there in my hands, those are some of my best memories and they were just magical moments in my life and so many people won’t get to experience that after awhile. Soon they will be getting gift cards for Christmas or their birthday and to me and my personal opinion that isn’t as special. And like you said it gave you a chance to try different games because one of your buddies or a relative might have a really good game and lend it to you so you can see if you’d ever want to buy it for yourself. Also back in the day if your buddies had gotten the same console and let’s say you weren’t able to get many games for it because your family couldn’t afford it cause they had other expenses and let’s say you had a game that your buddy wanted to play and he had a game you wanted to play, after you guys had finished the game you guys could lend the game to each other so you could both have a chance to play it, I know I came from a less fortunate family and when I was a kid I didn’t get very many games so when you got a game, you wanted to make sure it was a game liked because you wanted to get the best bang for your buck. also another great thing back in the day that helped with deciding if you wanted to buy a game, was kiosks, I wish they would still have those more readily available to us. I remember going to the mall with my family and sinking hours in on a kiosk, some people are never going to be able to experience that. We were so fortunate and lucky to have that and I’m proud to be part of the retro community.
But digital/streaming is the way it’s going unfortunately and there’s unfortunately nothing we can do about it. This is just my personal opinion on the subject, but if your happy that it’s going digital then I’m happy for you in that sense cause it’s going towards that, so that will be beneficial for you.

The truth is, though, that the physical media will break down and die in like 10-20 or 30 years it stops working. What you need is non-DRM files, like with GOG's model. You can put it on a backup flash drive, multiple computers, an m-disc that'll last 1000 years, whatever you want.
As far as boxed games, for me, it's more about the aesthetic and the cover art and the novelty of it, but the actual physical disc doesn't last forever.

Yes I do own a few games digitally mostly so my wife and I can game share (xbox) without having to buy two copies. I can see why digital games are gaining popularity with instant access to any game without having to leave the house. These newer generation gamers missed out on all the great fun of going to the video store on a Friday night to go check out new games or movies. It seems we lost our way to give in to instant gratification. Also a good point to bring up is that physical and digital games are the same price. Why? With a digital game there is no production cost because you don't have a case or disc / cart.

We have always asked why they are the same price! We cant come up with a good reason! We agree about pulling games off the shelf helps you appreciate and enjoy the games more! Cheers!

Yeah, that was Ida Auken who said "you will own nothing and you will be happy." and I think she is tied in with the WEF. As an American that doesn't sit well with most of us though I doubt anyone else likes that kind of philosophy either. We as the human creature are by our very nature possessive of our property no matter what it might be. Unfortunately, I'm afraid you guys are right about physical gaming going the way of the dodo. For physical collectors like me it's unthinkable but I'm afraid at this point it's unstoppable. I will say however that when a generation of consoles are released and no physical option exists at all. I will be done collecting anything new and exclusively collect retro at that point.

We agree we will go full retro if that happens! 🍻

I don't see myself ever not collecting physical media, I have enough games for retro systems that I've never played. I would probably be set for a while. I recently got a repro of the Simpsons arcade for dreamcast, highly recommend

Right off the top about letting friends borrow games... If everyone is on a subscription then everyone has the same games. This has been a positive experience for me. It's a lot easier to play a game together if everyone has access to the game. The conversation changes from, "Man, lets play this game it's totally worth it", to "Man, lets play this game we all have it".

I think small Independent developers will struggle the most when there is no physical media as the big developers will dominate because of awareness and advertising budgets. Ironically this will mean less choice as developers take less risks. It would be interesting to see digital only PS5 sales against PS5 with disc drives as this will show month on month the trends of gamers when it comes to intent on buying physically or digitally.

Yeah for sure that will happen! The big fish will eat the small fish! Cheers!
