Tragedy of Lebanon, carved in constitutional sectarianism & caught in Israel-Hezbollah-Palestine trap

- Lebanon, caught in Hezbollah-Israel crossfire, is a sobering case study of how much damage a country can do itself by embracing bad ideas like constitutional sectarianism & proportional representation. In Ep 1331 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta talks about why Lebanon is a failed state, its curse of “Confessionalism” and lessons for India

Excellent & timely episode. This confessional type of governance was implemented in 1943 but it could not survive for even 25 years because of the civil war which began in 1975. Your analysis and particularly your comments about applicability of this sort of arrangement in India is 100% accurate. Apart from the article which you have recommended & attached, "From Beirut to Jerusalem" Is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about Lebanon. Nationalism certainly runs deeper among us indians thats why despite multiple languages, religions, castes, huge size, centuries of colonial India has not only survived but progressed as a nation. No caste has ever been threat to nationalism.
Only religion particularly Islam is threat to Indian nationalism which already divided the country in 1947. Don't hide behind jargon, call spade a spade.

The problem is not proportional share in the power structure, the problem is democracy in deeply divided societies of the Thitd World. The truth is democracy evolved in small European nations with negligible diversity till the end of the Second World War. In third world conditions of deep fault lines, democracy gives rise to civil war ( Ceylon) dismemberment (Pakistan) perpetual ferment ( Nepal ) authoritarianism ( East Bengal) and violence and general lowering of standards to accommodate competing interests ( India) .

3 things we learnt
1. Everything in Lebanon has deteriorated since 1950 EXCEPT the population of muslims
2. Lebanon changed from a thriving nation to a rogue nation, failed state - correlation? rise of Islamic population
3. it debunks the theory that caste doesnt exist in christianity - there are so many sects, practices in christianity also and one doesnt mingle with the other. Same with muslims - they have various tribes in addition to faiths like sunni, shias, deobandis, ahemadia etc who kill each other, nations are at wars based on intra muslim faiths

It is an interesting over view on what people espouse in India for caste based reservations. I have always been against reservations based on caste population. If reservations have to happen, make it happen based on economic wellbeing of the society irrespective of caste or religion. I read, when bengal was partitioned, there was a proposal floated by Surawardy, backed by Sarat Bose for a United sovereign bengal as a seperate country. They proposed this lebanese style power sharing between hindus and Muslims. Surawardy had an affinity towards lebanon. Probably he died in beirut.
But the plan did not materialize, mainly because congress top brass like Nehru, patel and majority of bengali congrese (dominated by caste hindus) and hindu mahasabha (led by SP mukherjee) opposed it.
What we got in return?
A "secular" country with veto to Muslims which allowed Muslims to breed to again swell their numbers to further create chaos.

I am referring to Cyprus, which was plagued by civil war and then invasion by Turkey which has resulted into de facto partition of the small island into a Greek Cypriot speaking larger portion and tinier Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.-recognised only by Turkey. Another not so funny fact. During the Mandal case hearing, advocates appearing for pro-reservation parties had cited Cyprus as an example to follow. But the judges of the Supreme Court observed that Cyprus had also faced a civil war and division. These were oral observations and are are not part of the judgment but the interchange between lawyers and the judges was reported by the press.

In happier times, Beirut was "the Paris of the Middle East", both as a financial centre and as a tourist destination.
The growing/ exporting of illegal recreational drugs and the mass importing of used Mercedes sedans were just modern outgrowths of the ancient expertise in foreign trading that had lasted for thousands of years.
That title was given to any number of cities... and it's just romanticizing bullshit. Neither are drugs the problem. The problem was always religious sectarianism which was used by external powers that were fighting proxy wars in countries like Lebanon. The only rational response of a citizen of such a country is to leave and to apply for political asylum in a rationally governed country... which the intelligent people did, of course. The resulting brain drain eventually finishes these countries off completely, economically, culturally and politically. The success of a society is determined by its top 1%, whether we like this or not. Societies that lose that resource are doomed. They descend into cycles of needless violence... like Lebanon and Palestine.

I want to be like Sheikh Gupta. 😊
This CTC is an indirect call to end reservation of all types.
I wonder whether our netas, particularly RAGA, would ever read this episode and ponder over it.
Modi retiring at 74 n going back to his home town
Raga taking vrs from his mom n kharge and heading back to Brazil to be with his first love ,marry n settle.
Wishing both of them 👍
End of headaches to India
The idea of 'jiski jitni abadi uska utna haq' is only with reference to reservation which is capped at 50 percent. Though even this idea for reservation is also flawed, it's certainly not what you seem to suggest.
Though it's not entirely about Lebanon and more a personal story. But if you want to see ground reality of civil war Lebanon days, suggest you to watch 'Incendies' by Denis Villeneuve. Start of the next big modern day director after Nolan
You just have to watch this to understand how dengerous Congress party is for India
The RSS had quoted the example of Lebanon long ago .
Superb narrative
meritocracy should prevail.
Mr. Gupta, this is a wonderful episode. It would be interesting to add the book Sextarianism by Naya Mikdashi to the readings on Lebanon. She speaks of sectarianism + gender as a new category.
Thank you, my friend, for watching and writing in and, of course, for the book recommendation...best wishes, Shekhar
What a stupid governance system. Except for their cuisine nothing is good.
This is the one reason why partition was only way out. Only nonpracticing abrahamic faith adherents, or dharmic eastern civilization adherents can be secular or democratic. We this throughout the world, or ethnically homogenous. We see this even within our northeast in nagaland, people often underplay the impact of religion in destabilizing the state. Had we offered Jinnah the prime ministership, we e would have Lebanon 20x , fractured forever poor and having clamorous call for sharia to be implemented . So contrary to populist versions of Shashi tarroor asking for reparations, the British did a favor by partitioning India and in a way amputating gangrenous arm and saving civilization body.
please discuss the political situation in belgium as well ...
Thanks for info. Wha 😢is the present structure of govt,?
Been following Shekar Gupta since his Indian Express days and I am quite surprised at this comparison of a failed nation state to India, even a fleeting reference would need a strong argument which was indeed missing. If this was supposed to be conceptual exploration of confessionalism then the entire episode didn’t touch upon how Levant region - once a cultural and secular epicentre has deteriorated and probably this was the reason so. Such nation states are managed in a better way by folks like Gaddafi, Saddam and Assads (in my personal opinion only)
Britain had divided many countries like India x 3, Korea x 2, Africa x 54...☝️☝️
It's is not at all jiski jitni abadi uska utna haq. Shekhar ji it looks like you just cluttered it more instead of decluttering it.
Caste senses will invite same situation here in india as well.
Druze can be considered as the precursor of sufis. Excellent session
The downfall of Lebanon being liberal to the peaceful community has caused its demise, will other countries ever learn
