  • London Pinball normally likes to focus on classic electromechanical and solid state pinball games, but here in the shop we have a 1992 Bally Doctor Who machine.
Let me begin by saying that I've been fixing up pinball machines from every era for about 10 years, but this particular machine was, hands down, the biggest basketcase time suck bastard of a machine I've ever encountered. It had so many bloody problems that I very seriously considered setting it ablaze in a farm field somewhere. It was recently re-imported from Europe and whoever worked on it throughout its life was likely under the age of six and had serious sensory deficiencies. Obviously I'm joking, but it was very challenging in every respect to diagnose and repair, mostly because of shoddy previous repair work and hacks.
I don't have much else to say about this game, really. I'm not going to venture into the rules as there's so much to do that anything I say here would merely be scratching the surface. The upper ramp shot is a satisfying shot to make from the upper flipper and the Time Expander is a cool toy, in spite of it being the most pain-in-the-ass pinball mechanism ever created. The shot around the left side of the time expander into the pop bumpers is also a satisfying shot, as are the shots to the Daleks with the "clunk" sound when the mini playfield is fully extended.
The sound is well done with the music pulled directly from the old series. The voice calls are cool, but the Dalek voices can get realllllly annoying. Of course, I guess they're supposed to. They're Daleks, after all.
Anyway, the game was designed by Barry Oursler and Bill Pfutzenreuter with artwork by Linda Deal. Lots more info on Doctor Who pinball here: ipdb.org/machin...
I realize that the ship on top of the right ramp is backward. I noticed this after I shot the video. And for anyone that cares, the credit dot is related to the upper right flipper opto, which is bad. Of course, there's no upper right flipper, so replacing the opto is unnecessary, although I'll probably do it anyway just to eliminate the credit dot.

You never reached the Supreme Dalek level when the second layer of Daleks pops up and the machine goes mental with free games. I love this game, spent many a hour at the Great Britain playing this.

You are correct. Those lights in the panel for each of the doctors are the last thing I need to take care of before getting this machine out of my house forever. I keep forgetting to replace those bad lamps. Thanks for the reminder.

The optos look like they are working fine to me, registering when they are supposed and not when they are not.
The very first hit at the start of the game, the reason the 4 time expander lights came on was because Corey was using Doctor7 and hit the center target.
But the lights in the panel for each of the doctors are all out Corey.
Glad to see you got this thing up and running.

The playing field should be the inside of the TARDIS, and the ball goes through the doors to start.
I love the description - good work overcoming the tough challenges.

I checked to see if he had Doctor 7 selected as well, it's after that; do you have the cardboard shroud in the game that's usually missing? That's what blocks the ambient light.
Did you put new opto boards in the expander? The add jumper wires to it to bullet proof it do not work, the cracks return quickly (my theory is the mounting hole has expanded and even after resoldering, it's going to crack again in short order) and you get retriggering.

They all work perfectly in switch test. I've tested and tested and tested again. Do you feel they're merely triggering when they shouldn't? I'm wondering if it's interference from ambient light or target vibration because I'm absolutely positive the optos are perfect. At what point do you notice an issue?

Corey sorry to tell you but based on the way the matrix is over-scoring, you still have some opto problems on the mini playfield

This pinball is not a masterpiece... but it contains one of the most stunning soundtrack I have ever heard 😮 Like I do concerning the "Black Knight 2000" I play more to listen to the music than to improve my skills...

Look at the outlane gaps.. Over an inch wide. Ontop, not even a metall post to nudge the ball against.. Totally worthless game...
