❤❤❤Although I'm American, I can sing this song all the way through now- and I looked up the lyrics and know what they mean in Estonian. Yes, the weather isn't always the best in Eesti, "Kuid siinne rahvas tais on imevage" (but the people here are full of magic)- this is so true!
I've just started reading up on the Singing Revolution, and after looking up the lyrics of this song and seeing the emotion on the faces of the people here, and how young some of them are, I can say without a doubt that this is the most i've ever been moved by national pride. It really makes me reflect on how much I take my freedom for granted. Much love from Scotland.
Oh jeepers creepers, it is good of u to write this. If it is any consolation, I might remark that sometimes when feeling bad I listen, as an Estonian, to Kenneth McKellar or similar, singing "Scotland the Brave" or "O Flower of Scotland". Small nations are well advised to stick together and help each other to the extent possible for them. - Toomas Karmo; toomaskarmo.blogspot.com

In tears again. What they seem to have and express is lost in America-perhaps not irretrievably but for now-lost. the lyrics (found on the internet) display a profound love of place, an amazing statement of concern that justice is not being given to all, a confession of how difficult it is living in a country of long winter dark and long summer days, and amazement of their own inner strength and a loving commitment to living in Estonia (a disbelief that one could ever want to be somewhere else). Lovely beyond words. The power of the human voice in concert is just about too much for the heart to bear sometimes.
I am crying and I am not Estonian, I do not understand what is being sung - such beautiful, proud people! Greetings from an Englishman living in Romania.
I am Estonian, and this song also brings me to tears. The words to this song strongly demonstrate Estonians' love for their country in a profoundly heartfelt way! 💖💖💖
This IS DIVINE! I have tears in my eyes and goosebumps all over. This music and the voices are filled with so much passion, soul and love. God bless the musicians, the singers, the audience, the guests and the Estonian People! And everyone who listens to this piece with a compassionate loving and understanding heart!
Greetings from Catalonia, congratulations to the Estonian people, beautifull songs and beautifull persons. One day we will be free as you are and we will sing our own songs of freedom and happiness as you do all togheter. All the Best !!!
i don't understand the lyrics but i understand the heart felt gesture, thank you for sharing your heritage with the world .Don't let the people tell you you have to give this up to be a part of some sort of global community .It is our diversity and our uniqueness that makes this world not the homogenized world that certain interest groups want to create thank you.from Canada
@@helinommik9816 Mis sa halad? Kuhu siis eestlased on kadunud? Jah ligi 100 000 elab või töötab välismaal. Neid ei ajanud sinna mingi kolonn. Like frankieparley, I didn't understand the language but I comprehend the emotion. A beautiful and powerful song... It reduced me to tears when I first heard it (whisky imbibed, admittedly). But what a song! Long live Estonia!!

From the emotion of the song and judging by the EN version of lyrics here, I would say that Lithuanians and Latvians can understand and appreciate this song very well.

I was there on Sunday when this song was performed, the choir alone, and this second time with the singer/songwriter...all I can say is, even without a translation, the performance was beyond description...my mother, Uncle, and Grandparents fled the occupation, eventually settling in the US. As a non-Estonian speaker I had some concerns about the Song Festival.

No, it was written in 1998 for the 140 year anniversary of Mahtra war(for a play about the war); a clash between Estonian serfs and German noblemen Writing something like this in the Soviet Union would have probably gotten you into some deeeeeep trouble, but the song does apply to basically all of the Estonian history
Hetkel olen Kanadas aastaks ajaks vahetus6pilasena. Paar minutit tagasi m6tlesin, et kuulaksin veidike koorilaulu ja p2he tuli just see laul. Minu jaoks on Eesti t2iesti asendamatu.
Absoluutselt parim laul laulupeol. See pidu oli minu elu tipphetk! Ja miski ei trumpa seda üle. Seda tunnet on täiesti võimatu seletada. Nutan hetkel lahinal :)
What land is this? Could I it conceive? What land is this? Could I be without its caress? What land is this? How could it leave all its children motherless... What land is this? No mountains vastly tower Just woodlands without end and mires in throngs but the people here are filled with wonderous power and strange the tales in their songs...
@kassikangas Tore kui keegi seda samamoodi mõistab. Mulle tundub, et osad mõistavad laulusõnu natuke valesti, sest kunagist kannatuste aega ilmestab see laul palju paremini kui praegust vaba Eestit. :)
Volk on alati osanud hästi öelda. Ajalukku läheb see laul. Samuti nagu "Koit". Saab selgeks, kui armas see Eesti on.
Marc McClure It was a dance and a singing tradition of our country. And this song is talking about our country and our people and about our nature. It has a deep meaning. wish I had this lyrics in English. So I could leave it here to you.
See laul tuletab laulupidu.

I feel for you, Spanish imperialists are really not letting you get freedom.
Catalonia wants freedom from Spain.
Spain isn't giving them the basic human right of getting freedom.
I said Catalonia wants independence *from* Spain.
So Catalonia can decide for itself, And even if there is no good thing, What wrong with wanting freedom?
Also economic growth, Since Spain is poor.

*What is This Land?*
What is this land?
There are no mountains here,

At one time, the night eats the day,
then the day is so long that it swallows the night.

What is this land?
Are people here really
just fit to be slaves?
And who would one day collect all this pain,
so that there would be love
and the torture would end?
What is this land
where mercy is in danger?
What is this land
where freedom is buried in the ground?
Where is the justice here, where is the court,
where the worried should seek for justice?
What is this land?
Compassion here is rusty,
rusty is the heartless bosom of shame.
I could flee from here running,
but something still holds me back.
What is this land,

And how it does that I don’t know.
It does not cover me, does not feed,
But yet it drags me along with it.

What land is this? How could it leave
all its children motherless...
What land is this? No mountains vastly tower
Just woodlands without end and mires in throngs
but the people here are filled with wonderous power
and strange the tales in their songs...
Beautiful song.......Beautiful people.........
I thank those that have made the attempt to translate this into English
awesome song
@kassikangas Tore kui keegi seda samamoodi mõistab. Mulle tundub, et osad mõistavad laulusõnu natuke valesti, sest kunagist kannatuste aega ilmestab see laul palju paremini kui praegust vaba Eestit. :)
Estonia, beautiful!
Volk on alati osanud hästi öelda. Ajalukku läheb see laul. Samuti nagu "Koit". Saab selgeks, kui armas see Eesti on.
Tõsiselt hea laul! kuis suudan ma unustada isamaa!
Elina Pähklimägi isegi nutab :)
isegi mehed on nutnud, mis sa nüüd...
This is such a passionate presentation. I would love to know what the song celebrates
Marc McClure It was a dance and a singing tradition of our country. And this song is talking about our country and our people and about our nature. It has a deep meaning. wish I had this lyrics in English. So I could leave it here to you.
See laul tuletab laulupidu.
