Another thrilling match-up to close the Saturday fixtures, heavy weight contenders Atletico and Spurs from the Wanda, Tottenham come off an impressive 2-0 over Real, while Atletico had to settle for a 1-1 against City, both clubs need this one.
It took a while for the offenses to get going, the very first shot of the match came in the 25th from Atletico and it started a deluge of shots thereafter. Indeed by the 41st minute, 10 total shots had been taken, (5 each), and it was that last one that burned Atletico.
Countering after a failed ATM corner, Lucas Moura found Harry Kane near midfield with plenty of space, Harry did his part to get the ball downfield, but it was clear he had no shot at goal. Pulling back near the penalty area, Harry found Dele Alli at the edge of the box but a lot closer to center, Dele’s man was late to notice Dele had stopped his run and thus he had a clear shot at goal and even the great Oblak could not deny the sterling finish, 1-0 Spurs.
How the pubs must have been rolling back in London, but there was still another half to go, and Atletico at home were going to be a brutal pill.
The 2nd began as expected with Atletico being the dominant club, Spurs were hardly overrun, but the missiles fired upon their net were dangerous, an astute observer might note it was only a matter of time before one hit the mark.
Atletico certainly left it late, but in the 80th minute, a rebound off a Luis Suarez shot fell to Moussa Dembele, who was able to chip it in from short range for the equalizer. A few chances remained, but none tested Lloris or Oblak, and it became evident the draw was set.
A frustrating result for both as neither will be moving up and right now have at least Barca’s win threatening their respective positions. That said 1-1 is apt for tonight’s match.
