  • This installment of Penn State Altoona's historical video project provides background on Ted Holtzinger. John Edward (known as J.E. and Ted) Holtzinger was born the grandson of "Altoona Mirror" founder, Harry E. Slep. Ted was born in 1903 and went to Penn State to major in journalism and minor in business and animal husbandry. He would become a successful banker but decided to be a reporter for the "Altoona Mirror" in 1932. In 1941 he was the director of the "Mirror."
Ted would dedicate his life to community service and he started the Advisory Board that would found the Altoona Undergraduate Center (later Penn State Altoona) in 1939. He served on the board his entire life until his passing in 1977.
Mr. Holtzinger was a renaissance man. He would also own farms where he would use his animal husbandry knowledge. He would receive an honorary doctorate from St. Francis, Loretto.
