My New Year's Resolution - "do not buy any more fabric until you've made all the things you have in your stash." Me today : purchasing the fabric and simple shapes for the Calico Garden Quilt-along. 🤣

Thank you Becky…. I am a returned newbie to sewing, quilting and embroidery who also owns a Scan N Cut and have spent hours looking around my machines to see how everything works. Very good advice to people with one or more machines.

So I should be able to "catch on" to my Scan and cut. Have a great time on your cruise. You are the BEST teacher!!!! I think it is your military training.!! Love you!!!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have had the Scan N Cut DX330 for a year now and have not use it. I am a bag maker and would love to cut the SVG files but dont know how. I have asked several different people but no answer. You have helpedme! Now I just need to figure out how to cut the vinyl! (Not HTV!) Thanks again!!!💜💜💜
That quilt is going to be so cute. I am going to watch this with great interest. Great information today on the process. Thank you, Becky. BTW, I was listening to an old song the other day, Ode to Billie Joe, and the girl in the song is named Becky Thompson.
My scan and cut works with my computer and then I use the Bernina Embroidery 9 software , and when I am finished I can send it thru my computer right to my Bernina. I was jealous of you so I update and get the new and improved Bernina software that comes with the unit to receive my finished product. I love it.
Thanks Becky looking forward to watching this series of videos. The quilt kit is out of my price range but will enjoy learning especially the scan and cut ♥

While what this video is about applies overall, with the PE770, you will be limited to 5x7 designs only. To do the Calico Garden, you will need to become an expert at multiple hoopings and embroidery placement.

Becky, another really, really good tutorial! I have heard of lot of this before on your video's (back when you were located in the other room), but I think because I was so new to machine embroidery and sewing and all, it didn't all sink in. I think for those who don't have a scan n cut...if they have a scanner on a printer, they can scan it that way. If they don't have that either, if they have a library, they could help scan it to a USB stick.
I used to think this as well, but unfortunately just scanning with a printer/scanner won't work. You have to get that image into a graphic format like an .svg and scanners don't do that. Once you scan it, you'd need to make that image into an svg using a program like Photoshop or Gimp. Once you make the svg, then you can upload the svg file into Brother Canvas and it will download the image as an .fcm file that can go into Simply Applique software. It's the long way around John's Barn, but it can be done.

Thanks Becky! I have an older version of palette software which I can’t upgrade anymore… I would have to buy new version… so if that’s the case I might as well check out other software… can you tell me (again) which software you use?
Is there a way in BSE4/Simply applique to remove overlap when you have multiple parts to your design that you have put together from your scanned pieces?
You have to import each piece separately and turn it into an embroidery design. Then merge those individual designs into a single design and the software will remove overlapped stitches.
So should I buy BES4 OR SIMPLY APPLIQUE? They are the same price. I have a babylock. If you had this option what would you do? Since simply applique is in bes4. Will i get more bang for my buck purchasing bes4. Or should i just get simply applique because it would be easier to work with?
They should not be the same price. Simply Applique should be about half or less than BES4 because the SA is only a portion of the program of BES4. That said, I have both on two different computers. Honestly, I would recommend Simply Applique and then, when you are ready, purchase Embrilliance Essentials. You will have so much power between those two programs, you won't need BES4. You can get Simply Applique from Allbrands.com for less than $200. It will install on your computer and then save to the pes format you need for your BabyLock.
Sure, I'll do one of the blocks on my 6x10 machine. The easiest way is to print out each piece on paper or DIME Print & Stick Target Paper and then place the piece where it needs to go on the background fabric. You need the crosshair in the center of the design on the paper to know where to center the needle.
I used my scan n cut to scan a drawing of a crab. I used bes4 to covert it to appliqué. Changed the design to blanket stitch instead of satin stitch. 2 of the legs had the blanket stitch turned in while the rest of the crab was turned the other direction. I don’t know why this happened. Any helpful hints how to fix this problem?
That is a glitch in BES. That’s why I switched over to Stitch Artist2. You might try scanning each piece individually and then merge the designs in BES and see if that works.
Hi I am trying to convert a design to applique in BSE4. So I scanned all the parts in the scan and cut , sent all the parts to canvas work space. Brought all the parts into BSE4. But I have 1 part that does not show the blanket stitch. I did have the whole project selected. I redid the whole process, even repeating the scanning. Still did not work.
Every once in awhile, you'll get one that just won't convert to applique for some odd reason. It's a bug in the software. I've had it happen before and it's very frustrating.
Becky - I have Bernina software, can I do the same thing on it? I have an old Silhouette that cannot be updated any longer, so am “shopping” for a new cutter and am considering scan and cut.
I'm pretty sure the Bernina software can do this but I've never used it. I did a quick search in the Bernina Software User Guide for 'vector' and there are sections for loading vector graphics and artwork and converting them to embroidery. I'm not sure if it's as easy as 'one click of a button' but I believe it will do it. If you're getting a ScanNCut from a dealer, you might see if they will toss in BES4 or Simply Applique as part of the deal. You never know! Simply Applique is less than $200 so for simplicity's sake, it might be worth it unless you can figure out the Bernina software and get it to work for you. The SDX85 has a smaller on-board screen and fewer internal designs. But for the purposes of how I use the SNC to cut fabric and create the .fcm files for applique? It's perfect because it's still a 12x12 mat and the standard blade that comes with it works. Here's a blog post I wrote about it. powertoolswiththread.com/2022/07/12/which-scanncut-should-i-buy/

In short, no. If you have Stitch Artist 2, you don't need Simply Applique. They do the same thing when it comes to this process and SA2 is just as easy.
I'm sure many of the Simple Shapes are used throughout multiple quilts. But there are probably some that are unique to just this quilt. Lori Holt markets different Simple Shapes for each quilt design, but there's nothing that says you can't use those shapes in other quilts.
Thanks for the information! Just have one question, would I need to purchase the Embrilliance stitch artist if I already have the Essentials software? Or can I just use the Essentials to make the appliqué pieces?
You'd need Stitch Artist 2 (not Stitch Artist 1). Essentials doesn't have the ability to import vector graphics. Once you purchase Stitch Artist 2, just register the serial number on your Embrilliance screen, restart the program, and you'll have the ability to import those fcm files from the SNC. Stitch Artist 2 has all the tools of 1 and then some. bit.ly/3Qv2HZk
No, Simply Applique is a portion of BES4 that the developers pulled out of the parent-software and made it a stand-alone program. It has limited functionality, hence the name Simply Applique. I have a Baby Lock machine (Solaris 3), Pallet 11 software, a Windows laptop, and a Brother SDX325. Can I do the same thing with Pallet 11 that I would with Embrilliance? So basically follow the exact same process just with different embroidery software?
I found the Pallet 11 manual online and it does allow you to import vector graphics (svg) files. But you'd have to play with it to see if it will create the applique placement line and final blanket stitch. access.babylock.com/palette11/en/Palette11.2_EN/#!/04_1936129/04_193612904_1936129

Hi becky, i have simply applique and i was just wondering you know when i click convert to applique, it always comes up in an awful green colour, do you know how i change that default colour so that it will always set to that colour ?
Try playing around with the Thread Pallet creator on the Tools tab.
What will be the biggest hoop size for this quilt?
I'm not sure since the pattern isn't out yet. But the hoop size will be determined by the block size.
I have a Gypsy that works with my Cricket
Will the Scan and Cut work with the Gypsy?
I'm not sure what a Gypsy is.

I'll go back and try again.

Do I need embellished software to use scan and cut.
